I Can't Be the One to Stop You is the ninth episode of the fourth season of Legacies and the fifty-seventh episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING — Hope finds herself involved in a game of cat and mouse as Lizzie sets out to make things right. Josie has a heart-to-heart with Finch. Alaric, Landon, and Ted get a surprising result from their quest. Meanwhile, MG, Jed and Cleo handle matters back at The Salvatore School. Kaleb and Ethan also appear.[2]
Plot[]
Night has fallen and Jed crawls across the pavement from Kaleb's burning car. They've been in an accident, though Jed. Away from the accident, the body of a man with flayed flesh is startled. Jed notices he's got eyes now, but still no tongue. They need to get out of there before Kaleb returns, but it's too late. Kaleb is already behind him, wings outstretched. He approaches Jed and tells him this doesn't concern him and throws him into the air and away from them. With the man unable to defend himself, Kaleb unleashes his dragon fire.
Hope, still in Aurora's body crashes a birthday party, stealing various items to conceal her identity. Aurora calls her and boasts that she loves her new body and that she can keep running, but she'll find her. She quips that she could even be right behind her, which prompts Hope to look over her shoulder.
Hanging up her phone, Aurora sits at a restaurant, enjoying some wine. Lizzie appears in front of her and stabs her hand with the Red Oak stake. Lizzie wants to chat with her.
MG calls a squad meeting, which is Ethan's first official meeting. However, only he and Cleo are in attendance. They have team members MIA. Lizzie took off last night without a word, and Jed and Kaleb have also been gone for a while. MG questions if Cleo knows anything, but hasn't. Ethan assumes they're dating, though Cleo turns the question back at them for not defining what either one has with Lizzie. Without a real emergency, they have nothing to do. Mr. Springthorpe, however, counters that idea. They should all be in class, which they're skipping. As long as Dr. Saltzman is indisposed, and he is their acting headmaster, he will enforce them going to class since there's no need for their squad with Malivore gone. Jed barges into the Great Hall carrying the man from before, seemingly recovered, at least from Kaleb's dragon fire, though still by all appearances a walking corpse. Mr. Springthorpe faints at the sight while Jed explains that they still have a monster problem, and it's Kaleb.
Josie packs a suitcase as she magically writes a letter to Alaric. Within the letter, she tries to explain that she needs to leave this school. The therapy box showed her that it might be the only way that she can save Hope and her bus is leaving. After going through several drafts, she's interrupted by a knock at the door. It's Finch, though instead of trying to explain, she casts a spell to hide her suitcase. Finch notices the weird face she's making, but Josie brushes it off. She's here to tell her about the new monster emergency down stairs. They need a healing potion and Finch offers to help.
Lizzie faces Hope's body, though unaware it's actually Aurora, claiming she's making a mistake. She attempts to explain that she's not who she thinks she is, even calling out for someone to help her. Lizzie explains that she cast a Conus silenti spell before she stabbed her and that no one can hear anything she's saying. She also tells her that the stake embedded in her hand is her weakness, Nature's loophole, and she gets to decide whether she lives or dies. Aurora casts the incendia spell and a plate held by a nearby waiter erupts in fire. Lizzie realizes that Hope would never miss with a spell that easy and believes what Aurora is telling her.
Jed, Cleo, MG, and Ethan bring the man into the gymnasium and Cleo bandages him. Jed explains that they don't know who he is and when he and Kaleb found him, he'd just been ripped apart by an Argus. Then he literally started putting himself back together. They were on their way back to the school to get answers from him when Kaleb blew up his car and burned the guy. Regardless, they won't be able to get any answers until his mouth heals. MG elects to go look for Kaleb and Cleo joins him. Jed will remain behind to watch over the man. Ethan decides to stay behind, too. If this guy is dangerous, then he'll help keep people safe.
Alaric, Landon and the Necromancer make their way back to the Ferryman on the dock. Alaric plans to jump the Ferryman as soon as they get on board the boat and get back home. The Necromancer wonders if they can detour and drop him off in Peace, but quickly foregoes the comment. Approaching the Ferryman, he stretches out a hand, seeing what they've come to offer. They each present their coins to him and, in turn, he places each of the coins into three separate jars, pointing to each of them as he did so. Landon's jar however, is much smaller than Alaric and the Necromancer's and he figures they owe more than one coin.
Back at the restaurant, Lizzie removed the stake from Aurora's hand and they talked. Aurora recounts her past and the trauma Klaus put her through. Lizzie muses how it runs in the family, telling her own story about Hope. Aurora points out how she's trying to compare the loss of a hair accessory to the physical and emotional torment that she endured. However, Lizzie's point is that they've both suffered at the hands of a Mikaelson, suggesting they join forces. Aurora muses that she has the body of the tribrid and doesn't need help, however, Lizzie explains that she just snuck up on her while Hope is in control of her thousand-year-old vampire body. Aurora questions why she should trust her, though quite simply they both want the same thing. To make Hope Mikaelson pay.
Back at Aurora's estate, she's quickly gaining control of her connection to Hope's magic, using the incendia spell to light candles. Lizzie tells her to stop stalling and questions what she has to put Hope down. Aurora explains that after the descendants of the original Triad freed her, she knew she would need an object powerful enough to trap the tribrid. She shows Lizzie a sarcophagus. If one were to believe the legends, it's some sort of prisoner jail, said to be capable of containing a god. Lizzie doesn't believe this, though she points out that if monsters are real, then why not divine beings. All stories come from somewhere and if these stories are true, then the sarcophagus should be strong enough to trap the tribrid. Aurora then plans to subject her to eternal torment at the bottom of the ocean. She will die and come back, drowning to death over and over again. She will then finally have her vengeance. Lizzie isn't convinced of Aurora's plan. Hope always finds a way out and she feels that it's a little biblical. While Lizzie wants to make Hope suffer, she doesn't believe that means she deserves an eternity of torture. Aurora is adamant to make somebody pay for what Hope's family did to her. Lizzie tells her that she's no better than Klaus Mikaelson and if she goes through with it, then she'll be no better than she is. Lizzie siphons from the Red Oak stake, but Aurora telekinetically takes the stake from her and shoves Lizzie back into a support beam. She's waited far too long for this, and she won't let anyone ruin her fun.
Cleo, with a map in hand, and MG search the woods for Kaleb. Cleo is sure everything is going to be fine. He knows she's trying to give Kaleb some space, but tells her that it's okay to be worried about him. The same can be said about him and Lizzie. He explains how Kaleb even spent that whole time working on what he was going to say after they found her. How she made him want to be a better version of himself. This is something that Kaleb hasn't told her, but MG reassures him that it's okay to let herself be worried about him. Shortly, they come across Kaleb. He's on the ground with a tree branch sticking out of his side.
Finch and Josie are in the garden gathering herbs for the healing potion. Finch apologizes for slowing her down since she has a thing to do later tonight, but Josie brushes it off. Lacking in passive-aggressive conversations, she asks Josie to talk to her. She wants to tell Finch, but wants to do it later. While searching in her grimoire, her bus tickets fall out to Finch's shock. Josie attempts to tell her that it's not what it looked like.
Lizzie calls Hope and tells her that the game has changed and has swapped sides. She has teamed up with Aurora; however, she thinks that her centuries-long vendetta might have knocked a screw loose. Lying to Hope, she tells her that she's trapped Aurora, for now, and is willing to help her get her body back, on one condition. Hope has to help her clean up the mess she made and save her dad. Hope agrees to Lizzie's deal. Aurora commends her for her brilliant speech and almost had her believing her. Lizzie, however, was telling the truth. Using the siphoned magic, the telekinetically opens the sarcophagus and pushes Aurora into it, shutting it behind her. Lizzie opens a small door, revealing her face. Aurora attempts to speak, but Lizzie casts another spell to silence her. They both know how the Mikaelsons can be monsters, but Lizzie tells her that her beef isn't with Hope and taking out her trauma on her won't actually fix any of the hurt or heartache that her family put her through. Similarly, she doesn't want her future to look like Aurora's. Lizzie has decided to finish this her way. While contemplating how to trap Hope, she's too late.
The Necromancer and Alaric drink since they have larger jars to fill with coins. Alaric attempts to justify his actions, believing that each of the lives he's taken had it coming. The Necromancer points out that the system isn't just since Landon is atoning for things that he did while under Malivore's control. Landon appears and tells them they have work to do. All those people in town are potential coins. All they have to do is help them let go of whatever is keeping them from passing over. He believes it comes down to one of three things, usually: parents, sex, and God. They need to figure out their damage and then it's a spiritual jackpot. With renewed spirit, the three of them spread out, determined to go home.
In the garden, Finch confronts Josie about her bus tickets. Josie wants to tell her, but Finch interrupts her, questioning if that was right after the bus leaves. She attempts to explain. And asks if she remembers what she said after their Merge talk. While Josie meant every word of that, she explains the therapy box helped her to realize that she can't stay. Josie also pulls out a second ticket, asking if she'll come with her.
Kaleb is nearly unconscious, but realizes that Cleo and MG have found him. MG removes the stake, but Kaleb explains that the stake was what was stopping him. His monster side was taking over, and he couldn't control it. He had to slow himself down and buy Jed some time so he could get away. Cleo believes the act to be very noble and tells him that his plan worked. Jed and the man just arrived at the school a few hours ago. Kaleb, however, is worried that Jed took the man to the school. That man was the reason he was losing control and he's not the only one at the school that's half monster.
Jed stands watch over the bandaged man. Ethan appears believing that he could use a break. Jed declines, but Ethan insists. He disappears and reappears behind Jed, knocking him in the back with a weight.
Lizzie is now face to face with Hope. The therapy box has helped her discover a new side of herself. The side that's willing to do whatever it takes. Hope finds this interesting, wondering what her new plan is. Since she's not a tribrid anymore, and just a vampire, any old stake will do. Hope calls her bluff, believing that therapy is tricky, because knowing what you need to do and going through with it are two different things. Hope breaks off a piece of wood and hands it over, seeing what Lizzie is willing to do. Lizzie casts an illusion spell to make her appear like herself, as opposed to Aurora. Hope goads her into staking her, but all Lizzie can do is tell her how she hates this. She hates how many good memories they have and how she is the one to do this when no one else is willing to do it. Most of all, they are friends and she is a part of her messed up family. Ultimately, she can't be the one to stop her. Hope seemingly has her humanity back on with her heartfelt speech.
Meanwhile, Josie explains to Finch why she needs to leave, not the least of which is about Hope. Josie still believes that there's still good in her and she can't reach it while at the school. She needs to go someplace where she doesn't feel the pressure of having to save everyone's life all the time. That's not the hard part of Josie's explanation though. She tells Finch that she deserves to be happy and asks her to look at everything that she's gained while at the school. She's flourishing. Josie thinks she's being selfish asking her to leave it all behind, but Finch admits that she wouldn't have any of it if not for her. Josie is the person she wants to be with and she can't say no. MG interrupts them, needing something that can knock someone out.
Jed recovers, asking Ethan what's his problem. Ethan doesn't know, but it's the guy in the cell and, all of a sudden he just wants to smash his face in. Jed stands in between him and the bandaged man. Ethan insists and they fight, though ends up breaking Jed's arm. Ethan teleports into the cell, making his way towards the man, but MG grabs him by the hoodie and pulls him back, covering his mouth with the herbs Josie gave him. Ethan falls to the floor unconscious.
Seemingly with her humanity back on, Lizzie can't believe that she was tricked with the trident. Hope admits that she was reckless and attempts to apologize, but Lizzie wants to wait. Lizzie is honest with her. When Josie told her that she didn't think she was too far gone, she didn't believe her. Regardless, she doesn't know why she was the one that got to bring her back, but she's happy she did. Lizzie drops the illusion spell, prepared for Hope to stab Aurora and get her body back. She tells Lizzie that once she has her body back, she'll tell her something only she would know. Opening the sarcophagus, she stabs Aurora with the trident and regains her body. Hope steps out of the sarcophagus, telling her it worked. Panda promise. Aurora also awakens as they embrace each other in a hug. She tells Lizzie that she can't trust Hope. Once a Mikaelson, always a Mikaelson. Aurora pushes down a support beam and some of the floor collapses as she makes her escape.
Brutus and the other Salvatore werewolves come to comfort Jed. He's recovering with Josie and Finch. Josie gives him a healing potion. Brutus is worried about the pack, telling her they need an Alpha to lead them. Finch doesn't say anything, but notices all their worried looks.
Lizzie and Hope remain unharmed from Aurora's escape. The first thing Lizzie wants to do is to head back to Mystic Falls to have Hope save her dad. After that, then they can go after Aurora. Hope, however, has another question while holding the Red Oak stake. Convinced that Hope's humanity is returned, Lizzie tells her about the tree they created and how it can kill her. Hope remarks that Nature really doesn't waste any time, unlike her. In fact, she is disappointed in Lizzie because she had her shot and didn't even take it. Casting the incendia spell, she destroys the stake. Lizzie now knows that her humanity never came back on and it was all just an act. Deep down, Lizzie meant every word she said and still believes that there is still some good in her. Hope decides to prove everyone wrong and steps towards Lizzie. Lizzie refuses to run or to fight Hope. This whole act is stupid and she's only being a bully. She believes that she won't kill her. She hasn't killed anyone that she's cared about. There are some lines that even she won't cross. However, before Lizzie can even finish her statement or react, Hope vamps towards her and breaks her neck. Lizzie falls to the floor, dead.
Kaleb is back at the school, recovering, with Cleo by his side. She wonders if the urge is still there. He explains that it's like a whisper in his head, telling him to kill the bandaged man. The closer he is to him, the louder it gets. He doesn't think he should stick around for much longer and resolves to leave to find a solution. Cleo offers her help, but he doesn't want her worrying over him. He wants her to see that he can beat this monster thing on his own, but she's already seen that with his actions today. Besides, she is allowed to worry about her boyfriend. He accepts, solidifying their relationship.
Ethan awakens in his dorm room. MG is watching over him. He asks about Jed, but MG tells him that Josie's taking care of him and he'll be okay. He's still not sure what came over him, though if it wasn't for MG, he might have killed Jed. He believes after what he did, he doesn't deserve to stay at the school. MG tries to stop him, but Ethan isn't finished. He admits that he lied to him the other day when Lizzie came to get him. They didn't just go on a walk. They were spying on him and Cleo and saw them burning the Red Oak tree. He explains that Lizzie saved enough of it to make a stake and she asked him to keep it a secret. He did, believing that he was protecting the school and making hard decisions. Or maybe, he did it because when she looked at him, he would have done anything she asked. He wants her to pick him. Fearful, MG questions if Lizzie went after Hope with the stake, but Ethan doesn't know. Reiterating Ethan's earlier comment, MG tells him that he doesn't deserve to be here and yells for him to get out.
Finch sits with Josie at the bus stop. Josie is antsy and something feels off. Finch thinks it's just anxiety about leaving, but doesn't know. She thought Lizzie would have been back in time for her to say goodbye. Finch doesn't believe in therapy, but thinks what it told her was right. Josie believes Hope can still be reached and that she's capable of doing that. If she stays, there's always going to be another monster or emergency, another reason to stay. Josie already knows where this is going and this is the part where she tells her that she's not coming. Finch hands her back her bus ticket. She wants to come with her and Josie knows that, but the pack needs help and she's it. This is a new feeling for her, being needed somewhere. Josie explains that the therapy box told her she needed to do this alone, and the first thing she did was buy a second ticket. Old habits take time. Finch believes in her and that she's got this. Josie is so happy that she's found a home and when she returns, they can see where they are. They embrace in a final kiss and hug as the bus approaches.
The Necromancer wallows in self-pity, stuck out with helping lost souls, as Landon enters the Salvatore Crypt. He thinks Landon is there to gloat, and he shows him his jar, full of coins. He assumes this is proof that he's a far better person than he is. Being honest with him, the Necromancer never thought he had a chance at Peace. Never. Even when he was on that dock yelling at the Ferryman. He knew deep down that he was right. Except for one brief moment when he and Landon first got their coins. In that second, he thought it was possible. It's a shame to lose him in a place like this, for all the souls he's already helped. Landon dumps half of his coins into the Necromancer's jar, telling him he's not going anywhere yet. Alaric enters the crypt. This is taking far too long and they've got to find another way out of Limbo. Landon questions if there's even another way out, but he has someone with him that can help. The sphinx steps out from behind him. What an unforeseeable surprise.
Jed wakes to unnerving clattering and eerie grunting from the bandaged man. Believing he's about to be in another fight, the man opens the door and begins removing his bandages. He's recovered and apologizes for the unpleasant noises. It's always like that when his tongue grows back. Jed mistaken the man for a monster, but the man tells him that monsters are the least of their problems now.
Josie falls asleep on the bus ride out of Mystic Falls. In her dreams, Lizzie appears to her. Josie admits that she couldn't feel her. Lizzie couldn't feel her either. Josie wants to know what happened, but Lizzie tells her he doesn't need to worry. She did something kind of dumb, but had an insurance policy. Josie wants to know where she is, that she'll come to her, but Lizzie refuses. They're both doing what they think is right, and that's okay. She made a choice and she has to see it through on her own. Josie has to do the same. No matter what she feels next, just know, wherever she is, she loves her. Josie loves her too, no matter what. Josie awakens from her dream.
Hope tries to destroy the sarcophagus, but it appears to be impervious to her magic. Hearing short, rattling breaths, she turns to find Lizzie getting up off the floor. Hope is surprised, she's supposed to be dead. Lizzie knows, but now all she is, is hungry. She's in transition.
