I loved Niklaus. He was complicated and flawed and loyal. And he would have let the world burn just to save the people he loved. But you, you are willing to let go of someone you love to save innocent people that you'll never even meet. So, I think that you're already better than all of us. And that your father and mother would say the same.
Freya to Hope

We All Knew This Day Was Coming[2] is the third episode of the fourth season of Legacies and the fifty-first episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

THE TIME IS NOWHope realizes she has a difficult choice to make, much to Alaric's disapproval. Kaleb and MG come up with their own plan to help Hope as Hope seeks help from Josie and Lizzie. Meanwhile, Alaric realizes he needs to relinquish control. Landon, Jed and Ethan also star.[3]

Plot[]

Night has fallen on the football field at Mystic Falls High School. Blake throws several balls through the air, attempting to make it into a trash can, though he misses. A ball is thrown from behind him and hits the trash can. Ethan appears behind Blake, shocked to know it's him because of his busted arm. He explains that he's found someone who's hooked him up. Ethan rhetorically asks about the number of games they've lost in a row and how their future games are dwindling. He brings him to Malivore, though Blake mistakes him for Landon. Malivore explains that he transforms people and Blake unknowingly accepts the offer, believing it's about performance enhancing drugs. Malivore is glad to transform him. In fact, he's been obsessed for centuries with consuming everything he could, but he's had it all backwards.

At the Salvatore School, Lizzie and other witches work on locator spells, searching for Malivore and Ethan, who had been abducted. Jed, Finch and the werewolves are grid searching the woods. Alaric, Dorian, and Kaleb are listening in on a dispatcher call, hoping that the human locals can find the missing students, though there's been no sign of them. Hope confirms that the locator spells haven't worked and Malivore must be cloaking himself. Kaleb wonders what they can do next, but Alaric tells them there's nothing they can do, yet, unless the wolves can pick up a scent and they have to wait. This is a hostage situation because Malivore still has Landon, Cleo, and Ethan. They can't afford to do anything reckless. Hope is still upset that Alaric just let him go and about how he kept the fact that Landon was alive from her. Dorian leaves, but believes that Hope is right. They should have told her. Alaric and Kaleb continue to keep their secrets, but Hope decides to take care of Malivore herself. She telekinetically takes a sword from Alaric's hidden weapons cache and goes hunting herself.

In Malivore's darkness, Cleo wanders. She's frustrated over Landon's suggestion to inspire herself. She believes it's useless, because within the darkness, she's as blind as a bat. However, inspiration has struck. An idea comes to her and she casts a spell. The small orb of sound radiates outward through the darkness until something emits a sound back. There's something out there in the darkness, and she heads towards it.

MG listens on a police scanner, hoping to find something out about Ethan. Lizzie checks in on him, but he's not found anything out yet. Lizzie feels for Hope because her father lied to her, again. MG sticks up for Alaric, believing that he was doing what he thought was right. Sometimes you have to prioritize the greater good. Lizzie thinks that if she hadn't gone on the date with Ethan, then he'd probably be safe. He reassures her that it's not her fault. Ethan wanted to be supernatural before, even trying to get MG to turn him but he wouldn't do it. Either way, MG left him defenseless. However, to Lizzie, it sounds like MG chose the greater good. Over the scanner, the dispatcher mentions a 10-66 at the packing plant. It's a suspicious person.

Jed meets with Finch as they're about to head back out. He explains that they'll have to split the pack and she can lead half to the the Falls. Jed runs off as Josie approaches Finch. Josie attempts a peace offering, but Finch declines. Finch is still not in the mood for stories, as she's still coming to terms with the Merge, whereas Josie has had a year. Josie tells her to take her time and whatever she needs. Finch needs to know if she's actually going to try and win. She realizes how terrible it sounds, but she can't still if she's already decided she's not fighting. MG interrupts them; he and Josie have squad business to handle.

At the packing plant, Hope finds a monster attacking a deputy. The monster, a Cherufe, has been making a lot of noise, as if it wanted to be found. Hope casts a spell to create a torrent of water aimed at the monster. It temporarily douses the magma, but it quickly reignites. With the spell ineffective, Hope attacks it with the sword, but he melts the blade. Hope casts another spell, throwing the monster across the floor. She wants to know where Malivore is hiding, but the creature is overcome with another personality. His eyes turn black and Malivore speaks through him. He questions if she likes his new footsoldier considering he's made him just for her. Hope's not impressed, believing it to be just a distraction. Malivore reiterates that this is just a warning in what this fight will cost her. The monster will keep coming until all her friends are dead. Hope decides to end the cherufe, telekinetically grabs iron bars and impale the creature through the heart. Alaric, MG, Kaleb, Lizzie and Josie arrive just in time to see the creature fall, but when Hope turns back, they realize that the monster was another missing student; Blake.

Alaric and Dorian talk. Hope is consumed with grief and Alaric tries to console her. She couldn't have known. Hope decides in that moment that she'll become the tribrid before anyone else gets hurt.

Back at the school, Hope storms into her dorm room with Alaric hot on her trails. MG, Josie, Lizzie, and Kaleb listen from afar, the vampires using their enhanced hearing. Hope is adamant on turning, but Alaric believes there's another way. Malivore has found a way to turn innocent people into monsters that he can control. Eventually, they'll run out of cages and chains and spells. The longer Malivore remains alive, the more innocent people are in danger. Alaric believes her to still be in shock, but Hope refuses. Alaric would have made this choice a long time ago, but he believes she's not ready. Hope believes he doesn't trust her but he reminds her that she is still her father's daughter, no matter how much power she'll have. Crossing a line, Hope tells him to leave. The choice is hers and hers alone to make. Alaric asks her if she's ready to give up on Landon and Cleo.

Alaric leaves and wants them to reconvene in the library, though only MG and Kaleb follow. He wants them to search the books for anything to remove a magical parasite from its host. They need to find a way to pull Malivore out of the people he's infecting. It's now a race to find a solution before Hope goes through with her plan. Kaleb doesn't want to do that. He's more concerned with Cleo's and Ethan's choice. Kaleb informs MG that he has to pick a side and MG believes he has a way to stop Hope.

Hope gathers supplies but is interrupted by Lizzie and Josie. They're here for her and ask what she needs. She needs a favor. There's someone that knows Landon and she needs them to get her there. With their help, Hope finds Rafael in the 2028 prison world. They embrace in a hug and eventually catch up. Rafael is making the best out of the situation he's in. It's only a prison if you feel trapped. He admits it's something that he learned from Landon in foster care. She explains that if she kills Malivore, everything inside him dies too. Rafael understands no matter her choice. He reassures her that Landon, too, is willing to sacrifice everything just to spare other people's pain; something he learned from her. Losing Landon won't be easy, but is sure that out of them he'll have the easiest time finding peace.

Alaric receives an impromptu visit from Dorian, who was called by Josie. He hands Alaric a folder with names, spells in list form, and blank goodbye letters for Lizzie and Josie to write to each other as a reminder that they're forgiven. Dorian explains that it's his plan for the day of the Merge. He figured that Alaric wouldn't be thinking straight, fighting until the last second should that day come. If the worst happened, they would need a plan, because there are some things that can't be avoided. This is one of those days they've been trying to avoid with Hope becoming a full tribrid. It's happening whether or not he's ready. He questions if he's going to make her face it alone.

In the woods, MG leads Kaleb down a path. Kaleb is curious to what his plan is and what they're doing. Far enough out, MG explains the trolly situation and how they have to choose the lesser of two evils for the greater good. They have to save the greatest number of people and they have to make a choice. MG has made his and Kaleb has his own. However, before Kaleb can walk away from him, MG vamps behind him and breaks his neck and lays him on the ground. He apologizes and hopes that he'll understand when he wakes up.

In the darkness, Cleo comes to a door leading her into an ice cream parlor filled with shadow monsters. Looking around, she realizes that the freezer is a way out and narrowly escapes after waking the creatures.

Hope has to leave. Lizzie and Josie will be pulling her out of the prison world soon. She and Rafael stand and she asks him a final question. She wants advice for facing her last day. Rafael explains that he was only as good as the family he had around him. He knows her and suggests that she doesn't go through this alone. A bright light engulfs her and she wakes back up in the mortal world. Lizzie, Josie, Alaric and others are there with her. They've set up a meal at the Old Mill to spend Hope's last day alive together. Hope accepts.

Cleo wakes in the woods, seemingly free from Malivore. Jed stumbles upon her in the woods and Cleo asks about Hope. She explains that she's found a way that Malivore may be able to destroy her and he might have already figured it out too. The two rush back to the Salvatore School to warn her.

Wade and others share stories about Hope, such as she casting a spell on a professor to only speak Sumerian or when she was taken control of by the slug. They enjoy her company and laugh at the various stories. MG asks what she'll miss most. Hope recounts that witches lose their abilities to do magic when they complete their transition. Not being able to cast another spell is something she'd miss, particularly with Lizzie and Josie. Speaking of, they've prepared a spell for the three of them to cast. They join hands in a circle of branches and other herbs and as they cast, the nearby Cherry trees begin to blossom. Beneath them, a sapling sprouts. They explain that it's a promise of new life and a life full of promise. The three of them embrace in a hug as Alaric approaches. Hope is now ready.

Cleo and Jed finally reach the school but upon opening the doors, Cleo finds herself once again in the darkness. She's never left and it was all a trick. Jed was Malivore and he was inspired by a new approach. He's even impressed himself with this level of detail and more importantly, about how to destroy the tribrid. Malivore disappears and Cleo breaks down, defeated.

Ethan brings Kaleb to Malivore, who questions how he found him. Kaleb explains that the magic candle he has eliminates sounds and smells. All he had to do was listen for a place that was too quiet. Malivore admits he was clever, but Kaleb woke up from his broken neck and admits he had time to think. Kaleb isn't here to fight and instead makes him an offer.

Going through a few photos in her dorm room, Hope picks a few to keep with her to wake up to. Alaric explains that her emotions will be on overdrive and she'll be disoriented. Alaric recalls the time she first arrived at the school. She made a painting for him. She wanted to be a part of his family and Alaric tells her that she is. He apologizes for his earlier comments. He's not ready to let her go. In fact, she was right about him. His former self never got to watch her grow up or who she would have become. He respects and loves her dearly. She thanks him and he tells her he has one last confession. The meal and spell was a stall. There’s someone that wants to see her; her aunt Freya.

Hope embraces Freya in a hug as they reunite. Around the room, Freya lights candles and she notices the necklace that was given to her long ago. It's like having her family close. Rebekah, unfortunately, couldn't make it. She enjoys a good dramatic entrance but Hope questions what it will feel like. Freya explains that Elijah described it to her once. At first, there's nothing, but then you slowly realize there's nothing. That's your consciousness reigniting, then light will trickle in and you'll open your eyes and you'll be back. Colors will be different, sounds will be fuller and she'll feel small movements of air on her skin. It can be overwhelming, but reassures her that she can handle it. There's nothing to worry about and muses she's only there for the birth of the one and only tribrid because of family bragging rights. Hope has another question. There were wonderful parts of her father, but worries she may have all the other parts, too. Klaus used to say that the good came from her mother and believes she'll lose the good she has left. Freya reminds her that she is equal parts her mother and father and she would never disappear without a fight. People were afraid of her because they thought she would turn out like her father. Klaus was complicated and flawed and loyal and he would have let the world burn just to save the people he loved. But Hope is willing to let go of someone she loves to save innocent people that she'll never even meet. Freya thinks that she's already better than all of them and her parents would agree.

Lizzie sits with Alaric and wonders how long it would take for Hope to wake up. After a few hours, she'll awaken in transition and then she'll need to feed to complete it. Lizzie questions if that is an option she or Josie should consider, believing it would solve the Merge. Alaric believes in theory it would be possible. Lizzie's unsure if that's what she wants, becoming a vampire, but it's an option. The day they're afraid of just might come. Lizzie would like to talk about the Merge more instead of it being a big, unspoken thing.

At the Old Mill, Finch and Josie reunite. Josie admits that she won't say she would try to win because that would mean murdering her sister. But Finch already knew that. Josie realized she needed an excuse to run. She knows she spent her life running and it's easier if it's the other persons' fault. Finch tells her that it's never easier but doesn't know of an alternative. Josie explains that she should stay anyway. Hope is doing the unthinkable but she is surrounded by people willing to walk through it together. Some day, the unthinkable may happen to her. She doesn't know what she'll choose in that moment but she needs someone that will love her no matter what she chooses because she wants to be surrounded by people to look death in the face with her. She wants someone to love her enough to stay and fight, even if it's a lost cause because she's worth it.

Freya tells Hope that she's so proud of her. The time has come, however. She tells her to close her eyes, focus her breath and Freya casts the spell. Hope's heartbeat begins to slow and she lays her niece gently on the pillow, holding her hand.

Hope finds herself at a proverbial crossroads and sees someone in the distance. She calls out to them but no one answers and follows the figure to the docks; it's the Ferryman. He motions to the boat and points to the bright light across the pond. Hope doesn't understand. She questions if she's supposed to follow to begin the transformation. The Ferryman shakes his head no. She questions if it's Peace, but doesn't get an answer.

MG stands watch over Hope as Kaleb knocks on the door. MG attempts to apologize but Kaleb gets it. He almost went too far today but MG convinced him. Someone is going to get hurt, no matter what. He reassures Kaleb they'll find a way to save Cleo but Kaleb has already found one. Kaleb punches MG in the gut with enough force to knock him into the ceiling and to the floor, knocking him unconscious. Kaleb, eyes black and sprouting dragon-like wings, has another objective: Hope.

Lizzie comes to join MG to watch over Hope with tea and sodas. However, she finds him unconscious on the floor, Hope gone, and a burning hole in the balcony doors.
