If Silas is the first vampire then the "originals" are not really original, right? I'm having trouble understanding this story line.

Well I wouldn't call him exactly a vampire. Whilst I'll admit, he does have....how do I say this....vampire-like statuses, but as he said, "I came first. Vampires are nothing more than a disgusting perversion of me. I'm unkillabe, I'm immortal, and I'm psychic and to functio, I need human blood, but dont ever...call me a vampire."
Everyone is so quick to quote that he said he's not a Vampire in Season 5 and quick to forget he called HIMSELF a Vampire in Season 4 (when he was still taking the form of Atticus Shane) he said “Well Silas can't do magic, he was a witch, but after he became immortal that ended. You can be a witch or a vampire but never both.” The writers changed their minds. Simple as that! They were going to have him be a Vampire in Season 4. They changed their minds and now he is not. End of story. They might have even changed it BECAUSE of the potential conflict with calling the Mikleson's "The Originals." But don't take my word for it, go back and watch Stand By Me. There really is no argument here.
Silas was the first immortal being, not vampire. The spell Questisiayh did only made them immortal. Esther did the same spell, but in a diffrent way. The Originals became vampire's. It is a bit confusing, but if you read about Silas on here and then about the The Original's it should clear it right up for you :)
That's the thing, the writers didn't make it 100% clear this season. They may have changed their minds, but they couldn't blatantly say that Silas wasn't a Vampire, especially after what Silas himself said last season.
Silas's quote..."Please, Liz, I came first. Vampires are nothing more than a disgusting perversion of me. I'm unkillable, I'm immortal and I'm psychic, and to function I need human blood, but don't ever call me a vampire"...
What Silas said can easily just be taken as his arrogance and sense of superiority, which in this case makes sense, because he is superior.
I would call it a different spell but with similarities from Qetsiyah's. Plot holes aside (including if the writers wanted Silas to be a vampire or not) I believe it was meant to present it in a way that Esther actually was aware of who Qetsiyah was through Ayanna but she changed it to her own rules (with Mikael's help but how or on what we don't know) because she didn't want her children to become truly immortal, only hard enough to kill so they all could try and live their life (Remember they lived in the tough middle/dark ages). She said in season 3 that she made her husband a vampire hunter, that was likely a fail safe in case her spell went wrong or more likely if her children changed and got out of hands. This is also before they found out about a) the blood hunger and b) they could turn other humans into 'non-original' vampires.
@ElijahKatherinFan98
Esther was wrong when she said she made her husband a vamprie hunter....and if i remember Esther had actually said she made Alaric, like her husband, a vampire hunter....Mikael wasn't really a vampire hunter.....he was just after his children (more specifically Klaus) and he used to feed on vampires so to not have the urge to kill humans.....I don't think Miakel ever intended to kill vampires or even his children before he came to know who Klaus really was
silas is the first imortal being and not a vampire, so the originals are original because they were the first vampires.
The Originals can still be considered as the Originals because they are the first Vampires to be created from Esther's ritual. The first of their type of Vampire, so to speak.
Season 4, Silas was a Vampire, no question, he even said himself that he was a Vampire.
Season 5, the writers left it up to us to decide, because although they tried to make Silas just a "Immortal", they didn't blatantly come out and say that he wasn't a Vampire.
At the end of the day, this can only be a matter of opinion. Different people define Vampires by different things, so no one can be right or wrong when debating this.
u r missunderstanding the whole concept
the originals are the vampire that are created by magic and not by other vampires
so even alaric(history teacher)was a original vampire
it has nothing to do with wh was born first
Not necessarily a priority but it adds power to the word when people apply original to the Original family.
