Silas isn't different from all the other characters. He has lived longer and is much more powerful, but he still only wants to serve his own selfish interests like all the other characters.
The only reason Qetsiyah wanted to help Silas create the spell of immortality was because she loved him and wanted to be with him for eternity.
The only reason Silas wanted to be immortal was so he could be with his lover forever. When his lover was killed, Silas didn't want to be immortal anymore as he wouldn't be with his lover. But Qetsiyah made it so that even if he died he wouldn't be able to be with his lover.
All of Qetsiyah did was so that she could be with Silas.
All of what Silas did and is doing is so he can be with his lover, and not with the woman who killed his lover.
All of what Esther and Mikael did was to protect their family, but they didn't think of the consequences that this would have on the world.
Mikael started a thousand-year-old inter-species rivalry just because his pride was hurt when he learned that his wife had slept with another man and had had a kid that wasn't from him.
Klaus spent the last thousand years trying to create the family that he felt he never had.
Elijah spent the last 500 hundred years trying to find Katherine because he felt bad for failing Klaus.
All of what Rebekah did and is doing is so she can have a normal human life.
Almost all of the show so far has been about Elena trying to protect her friends and family and about Damon, Stefan and Elena protecting each other.
And I could come up with more examples, the list goes on and on. The truth is, every single thing that has ever happened in the show so far was because of some of the characters' selfish interests going against some of the other characters' selfish interests. Everyone is just pursuing his own selfish interests.
Now they're making Silas look like the villain, but is he really the bad guy in all of this? I don't think the other characters are any better than he is. In fact, Silas has probably killed less people in his lifetime than most of the vampires in the series.
The only people, in my opinion, who deserve respect are Lexi and Mikael. Lexi is the only somewhat altruistic character in the show, and Mikael later recognized the mistake that he had made in making his family immortal, and he tried to fix it but was never able to.
