I have a very detailed opinon about this character, but I'm curious to see how everyone else feels. How do you see Damon? A bad person who does good deeds for his benefit? or, a good person deep down who struggles to show it? What do you think?

well he is not a saint
i actually almost fully 100% agree with this, minus the Katherine part. She's an overall bad person, but her story is different than Damon's. She was forced to do a lot of things, unlike Damon who continues to do everything of free will. I do not like Damon at all, BUT I'm always open to hear what his actual fans like about him. Most of his good deeds are for Elena, not because you can trust him or be reassured he's a changing for the better person. he's extremely selfish and treats human life as a toy. <-- many Damon fans defend that statement by saying "He's a vampire", yet out of the main cast, he's the Only vampire who freely chooses to torture and kill innocent people. Hmm...
It was annoying to see Elena cry her eyes out after finding out Aaron was killed and then she immediately got over it when she found out Damon was the one who killed him... In Season 5..... He really hasn't changed at all. I don't like him but i still enjoy listening to his fans explain why They Do like him
Damon is a very 'lost' sort of character. He's constantly bombarded about 'losing his humanity' when really, he's too human. He acts on emotions and impulses, he doesn't think and does reckless things, how is that inhumane? he can't control himself, and allows his emotions to take control. Jealousy, anger, pity (mostly for himself). He constantly feels pressured to be the 'bad brother' and constantly tries to fit himself into that status. He's accepted as the 'bad brother' as an enemy and manipulative jerk so doesn't try to change it (because he doesn't think he could? after everything he's done, he can't see how ANYONE would be willing to give him a chance to change)
I understand and completely LOVE Damon's character. He makes the tough decisions for love and for the people he cares about. I'm not saying his character is without flaw, because that's not true. He does stupid things, things he didn't need to do. It's almost as if he doesn't have a filter for his actions - If he wants to punch someone in that moment, he does it and doesn't think twice. Once again, over emotional, acting on impulse.
Elena is the reason Damon is becoming a better person, she makes him less selfish, she makes him stop and think about how his actions can affect everyone else. And Damon makes Elena feel alive, he makes her feel free and untouchable, protected even. She doesn't have to put up a front - be a good girl and live in fear of him judging her, because how could he judge? They are meant for eachother and it just shows how love can change a person. That's all Damon needed, was a bit of love. I'm not saying he's completely changed, because he hasn't. Damon has to stop being compared to Stefan, because he's not a good or bad person. He makes the tough decisions and reckless ones, and does the things Stefan would never have the guts to do.
In conclusions, Damon is a guy who needs to be shown some kindness and love. He's a character that constantly needs attention or else he'll fall apart. He's emotional but doesn't show it, compassionate but hides it because he's apparently the 'bad brother' ...so why should he be any different? he finds it easier to be what people see him as. Which is bad. Anyway...Delena FTW! lol! :)
He's a good person deep down. He loves Elena and he certainly just needs some light in his life. He's funny, he makes people laugh, he sacrifizes for other people and he would do anything to save the people he loves. In the first seasons, he just needed to learn how to become a good person again. I mean, he was a 170 year old heartbroken vampire with no humanity who was furious at his brother, Stefan. And at the end of the season 5, he finally got everything he wanted and became a good person.♥
In my opinion ( as a fan of Damon), Damon Salvatore is a guy with a very very dark mind...While I consider characters like Klaus downright evil, I find Damon dark...very dark...just looking at his revenge plan for killing whitemores over the years shows the difference between him and someone like Klaus. Klaus would've killed everyone and everyone related to them and to their far relatives and so on...Damon literally twisted his plan and made it unpredictable. He's complicated, unstable, reckless, selfish, impulsive and unwise but also intelligent, loyal in a weird manner and brave nevertheless. He sucks at making decisions right away (That's Stefan's specialty) but is a chessmaster when it comes to masterminding big plans. He's brutally honest but also really secretive. He's manipulative, He can go from a stubborn manchild to a charming gentleman to a walking-talking killing machine. He hides his true emotions very well..That's why when it comes to Damon I try not to predict how he's feeling esp. when it comes to guilt. I like the fact that he has priorities...so unlike Stefan who does the morally best thing right away, Damon has very specific priorities.
He also has a tendency to do the necessary thing which is not necessarilly the right and moral...He does the questionable things the heroes of the series aren't supposed to do but those things are mosly necessary..." I don't mind being the bad guy. Because somebody has to fill that role and get things done" This quote is literally Damon's personality analysis...sure those "things" are at times very selfish things and he has very selfish reasons but there's always something there that needs to be done and he does it.
In the end, thee are many contrasts in his personality that I enjoy watching...and while the description I wrote might be very annoying for lots of peaple to watch (understandably) I can't help but like and enjoy such an unpredictable and twisted character...I love studying his character (and Katherine's) the most. I don't like defending him, unlike most other Damon fans, I just enjoy what he normaly is. (as weird as that might sound)
Totally agree with the above ^^^^
He's manipulative, cunning, funny, knows the line not to cross (like killing Stefan), unpredictable and reads people really well. That's the parts I like and then there's part I don't like and that's his side of letting himself get whipped with Elena, even before when he loved her he actually didn't really care what she thought of him and that was awesome.
Okay, here's what I think:
In the beginning I thought Damon was a selfish, narsisstic, no good, bad boy who wasn't afraid to kill anyone. He (is) stubborn, and doesn't let go of something when he wants it. He chased down Katherine for over 100 years, and that shows that he is determined to not give up and find her. When he didn't find her he was crushed, and he doesn't have feelings even though he is impulsive. He broke down when he couldn't find her, and turned that sadness into hatred.
After that I started to like Damon, thinking that underneath that cocky sarcastic ass attitude was actually someone who cares. He cares about Elena, and his brother. When he saved Stefan, and was captured by the Augistine society he was scared and feared for his life. He isn't lost, but after 175 (give or a take a few years) he's built up a wall that not many can break.
He is capable of having friends, it just takes him longer to connect with them. Somethings that he does is driven by anger, sadness, and hatred. But nothing he has is driven by the fact he is evil, his emotions are extremely heightened especially the three I listed above. So when something happens he acts on it, and kills ruthlessly because he's lost. I look at him now and see a cocky, sarcastic, bad body, who has feelings, and is... Lost.
My honest opnion about Damon Salvatore:-
I loved him the moment he entered in TVD....i love his sense of humour and his vamiprism....he brings he is no saint and i don't think i would like a vamire to be saint either....falling in love with elena made him lose many of his cool personalities but when Klaus cannot hide from the effects of love than how can one expect Damon to do that....I love his care about Stefan and his other friends...it's somewhat amazing to see how Damon genuienly cares about all the people whom he had no respect for or just used them for his own purpose (Caroline tops that list).....he has done bad things too but i think it's that good and bad that makes him more lovable and more Damonish so i would never want him to lose his humourous and bad side.
Nobodies perfect, but Damon has had the most bad decisions. He hs been manipulative, evil, selfish and an overall complete dick. Damon Salvatore is not perfect, and he doesn't try to be. But he encourages others to be better than him, and has succeeded several times. And the more flaws you have, the more good things you are, and Damon has been by himself for years. He's been great.
