When it shows Damon and Elena greeting their loved ones (Gilbert Family & Stefan) in the afterlife, is this a flash forward to many years later, or is it present time? Meaning if you were to take the Legacies timeline, would they both be dead now or was this afterlife scene just showing what will eventually happen after they grow old and they are still alive?

Wouldn't his soul get put into the phoenix stone? Then once it was destroyed his soul would be freed, right?
There's a theory that Kai actually linked Elena's life to Stefan's because he knew Stefan was the one person Damon would never kill. Plus, after Stefan died he was able to have one last conversation with Elena, afterwards resulting in her waking. Could this mean that her life was never rlly linked to Bonnie's?
