After School Special is the tenth episode of the fourth season of Template:The Vampire Diaries and the seventy-sixth episode of the series.

Summary

REBEKAH IS BACK WITH A VENGEANCE — Appearing unexpectedly at Mystic Falls High School, Rebekah wastes no time trying to force Stefan, Elena, and Caroline to answer her questions about the search for a cure for vampirism, leading to a bombshell piece of information from Elena. When Bonnie's father, Rudy Hopkins, accepts the role of Interim Mayor, he makes it a priority to protect his daughter, who isn't at all comfortable with the role he suddenly wants to play in her life. Professor Shane continues to encourage Bonnie to believe in her powers, but he soon finds himself in danger when he reveals too much to the wrong person. Later, Caroline does her best to comfort Tyler after a violent confrontation. Meanwhile, at the lake house, Damon and Matt train Jeremy, trying to raise his game as a hunter, but Klaus is impatient with their progress and intervenes to speed up the process.

Antagonists: Rebekah Mikaelson, April Young, Atticus Shane and Kol Mikaelson.
- This is the only episode to feature April as an antagonist.
This is the first episode of the third chapter of Season Four, The Silas Chapter.
The memorial for Carol Lockwood is held by Sheriff Forbes.
Elena declares her love to Damon for the first time in this episode.
It is revealed that Kol and his siblings know about Silas, though only Kol believes that he is actually real, while the other believe he is nothing but a fairy tale.

This episode marks the first appearance of Rudy Hopkins, Bonnie's father.

Rebekah was last seen awake in The Five. She was neutralized by Klaus and her coffin was discovered by April in O Come, All Ye Faithful.
Kol was last seen in Heart of Darkness. This episode being his first modern day appearance in Season Four.
This episode marks the first appearance of Bonnie's father, Rudy Hopkins.
As there is no democracy in Mystic Falls, Rudy Hopkins was appointed the next mayor - after six people refused the job.

Cultural References

The term "after school special" refers to a genre of American television programs that were meant to be viewed by students after they arrived home from school. The term was coined and is closely associated with the ABC Afterschool Special series (1972–1997.)
After School Special is the same name of a Supernatural episode that Candice Accola guest starred in as Amanda Heckerling. It was the thirteenth episode of Season 4.
Stefan is going on a Bender - a drinking spree. At least he did not go on a "Ripper Bender" as Caroline fears, or there would be more corpses to deal with.
Wingman - Originally a pilot who flies by the wing of the lead pilot in a formation. Nowadays used socially to mean a person giving support to another, who is trying to approach potential partners.
The Karate Kid - 1984 romance drama with Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. An underdog story of a misplaced kid that gets trained into Karate by the caretaker from the building he lives. Great commercial success, was remade recently with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.
Wants a shot at this title - wants a fight, a rumble. Apparently this phrase is a quote from Lethal Weapon Quotes (1987).
Facebook - Damon says he updated the status of his relationship with Jeremy to "It's complicated" - that's one of the funny and popular relationship statuses of the social network.
Damon says Jeremy is "chum" - "to chum the waters" is the practice of attracting fish, specially shark, by throwing "chum" - mostly fish offal - into the water. The practice is illegal in several parts of the world. In some contexts it's used as synonym for "Fish Bait".
"The little hunter that would" - is a play on words referring to The Little Engine That Could - a children's book published in the United States in 1930.
Darwinism - the broad concept of origin of species as published by Charles Darwin. Generally abbreviated as "Survival of the fittest", although this not really how natural selection works.
The scene where Jeremy, Matt and Damon enter the bar with all the vampires in transition could be a homage to Near Dark, cult vampire movie from 1984, where a newbie vampire is taken to a bar to feed, and massacre ensues. Or maybe to Quentin Tarantino's From Dusk till Dawn, where some runaways stumble upon a bar where everybody turns into vampires after dark.

Damon: "Zero."

Klaus: "That's a pity. I'm gonna need that cure sooner rather than later. Hybrid shortage and all. How can I help?"

Stefan: (to Elena) "What is there to talk about? How many more ways can you rip my heart out?"

Jeremy: (to Damon) "Tell Klaus we're not gonna do this his way."

Jeremy: "Go ahead, make a move."

Matt: "I drove up to be your wing-man, not kick your ass. (Jeremy flips him and twists his arm) Okay, I get it. You're a badass."

Jeremy: (to Damon) "You see that?"

Damon: "Couldn't miss it. It was in slow motion."

Jeremy: "Well, then teach me something useful. We've been here for days and so far all you've done is bark orders."

Damon: "Okay, take a seat at the bench, quarterback. Karate kid wants a shot at the title."

Matt: "Jeremy, you're not ready for this." (Jeremy rushes at Damon with a stake. He dodges easily and puts Jeremy in a choke-hold)

Damon: "Well, now all I have to do is apply a little pressure into your jaw..."

Elena: (compelled to tell the truth) "I didn't sleep with Damon because of the sire bond. I slept with Damon because I'm in love with him."

Elena: "April? What's wrong?"

April: "Nothing. I'm fine."

Elena: "But you're crying."

April: "It's just the whole mayor thing. You know? It's bringing up stuff with my dad." (She pauses) "And I know you're a vampire."

Elena: "Wait. What?"

(Rebekah comes up behind Elena and snaps her neck; Elena falls to the floor)

April: "Was that necessary?"

Rebekah: "No, but it was fun."

(Rebekah smiles)

April: "It's time this entire town started telling the truth."

Jeremy: "Don't act like you care about my life. You care about the Hunter's Mark and curing Elena so she's not sired to your ass."

Damon: "Both require you to be alive. Which is why I've updated our relationship status to "it's complicated."

Rebekah: "So, vampire-Elena is a trollop who likes bad boys, which explains why Stefan reeks of alcohol."

Rebekah: "Why are my least favorite people always the most durable?"

Rebekah: "He's of no use dead."

Kol: "Did you not hear what he said!? Silas will kill us all, sister."

Rebekah: "Silas does not exist. He is a fairy tale made up to scare children into eating their vegetables."

Shane: "Silas is very real."

Rebekah: "You're human. Why do you want it anyway?"

Shane: "That's the beauty of this. You can have it. I just want Silas."

Kol: "No! What do you know about Silas?"

Shane: "He's the world's first immortal being, who just happens to be imprisoned with the cure. And I want to free him."
