Plot[]
The episode begins with Elijah Mikaelson narrating. He tells how throughout his life, he had believed you are forever bound to those you share blood with. He continued by saying that while you can’t choose this bond, this bond can be your greatest strength… or deepest regret. This has haunted Elijah for as long as he can remember.
On the Mississippi River, 300 years ago, a small group of humans saw a ship floating in out of nowhere with no banner or flag. While one called it a miracle ship, the other questioned why it was just sitting there. The first one said they would just have to find out, so the group climbed on. As they explored the ship, they questioned where everyone was.
One of the humans said it was legally forfeited and that they should take whatever pleases them. The group happened upon two coffins and questioned what to make of them. They open one of the coffins and find someone inside. Suddenly, the humans are picked off one by one until only one remains.
With one remaining, Elijah and Rebekah Mikaelson revealed themselves. Elijah compelled the man to remember before telling him to ‘kindly’ transport their belongings to the shore. The human questioned what they were, and Rebekah told him they were the original vampires before introducing all of them.
Klaus Mikaelson appeared from above and threw down the dead body of one of the humans as Rebekah called him a beast. He pointed out that they fled Europe and survived the seas before questioning if she wanted him to arrive hungry on the shores of their new home. Elijah teased his brother before asking the remaining human where they landed. The human tells them that they’re off the shores of New Orleans. Elijah thanked him before telling him he should find assistance for their luggage.
In New Orleans in the present, Elijah sits at the bar of Rousseau’s. Camille O'Connell questions what brought him there as she gives him his drink. He tells her he used to live their, so she questions when. Elijah then tells her it was a long time ago, so she tells him she just moved there before questioning what brought him back.
Elijah tells her that his brother is somewhere here and that he’s afraid he may have gotten into a bind. Camille jokes that it sounds like a common occurrence. Elijah calls his brother complicated. Cut to some clips of Klaus ripping out the throat of a vampire. Elijah calles Klaus, defiant, ill-mannered, and a little temperamental. Cut to another clip of Klaus impaling someone to a tree. Elijah explains that he and his brother don’t share the same father, how it never bother himself but his brother resented it as he never felt like he belonged.
When Elijah says Klaus has a long history of getting into trouble, Camille guesses that Elijah has a long history of getting him out of it. She then continues to ask what kind of bind his brother is in, so he tells her that his brother seems to think there are people in town that are conspiring against him. Camille proceeds to call Elijah’s brother narcissistic and paranoid before apology as she explains she’s a bartender with a grad degree in psychology.
Elijah asks Camille is she knows someone who could shed some light on Klaus’s current predicament, Jane-Anne Deveraux, asking where he could find her. Camielle tells him she doesn’t know where she is, but she knows someone who might.
Elsewhere, Sabine Laurent is holding a tour of New Orleans’ French Quarter. She shows off the jazz and jambalaya, romance and poetry, and things that go bump in the night. She tells the tourists tales about vampires, calling them many different names before telling them about the witches, her personal favorite. She shows them the voodoo shop, Jardin Gris, and tells them to go inside to browser for a hex.
With the tourist inside and out-of-earshot, Sabine calls out Elijah, questioning if he’s going to coninue following her or if he is going to talk. Elijah is surprised that she knows who he is, but Sabine tells that he and his family are famous amongst the witches, especially with his brother back in town. Elijah tells her Klaus learned that there’s a witch conspiring against him, Jane-Anne Deveraux.
Sabine tells Elijah that if Klaus is looking for Jane-Anne, then he’s a little late. He realizes that she’s dead, so Sabine tells Elijah to follow her, saying that Jane-Anne’s sister Sophie Deveraux is going to want to talk to him.
Arriving to the street where Jane-Anne dead, witches have surrounder he body with flowers and candles. When Elijah and Sabine, he questions why she was killed in public for anyone to find. Sabine tells him that the only ones that come around here are witches, and now her sister has come to take her body, explaining her spirit can’t rest until it’s properly interred in the cemetery.
Elijah worries that Klaus had something to do with this, but Sabine tells him that Jane-Anne died because she was caught doing magic. Elijah questions what she means. Suddenly, a whistle echoes down the street, drawling the attention of the two and the other witches. Sabine tells him that if he wants to know who killed Jane-Anne, he’s about to see Marcel Gerard in action. Elijah questions if it’s the vampire Marcel, so she tells him a lot has changed since his family left town, Marcel included.
Jumping over cars and off buildings, the vampires surrounder the witches. Sabine pleads for Elijah to stay hidden, as if Marcel learns that a witch lured the Originals back into town, the witches will be slaughtered. Listening to her, he uses his vampiric superspeed to get up to a balcony out of view. Marcel questions what is going on as he approaches the grieving witches, saying to Sophie that this street corner isn’t the luckiest spot for her family tonight.
Marcel points out that it wasn’t even an hour ago that they had to teach Sophie’s sister ‘a lesson’. Sophie tells him that the witches are putting Jane-Anne to rest and ask for him to leave them alone. Marcel tells her that he never said they could move the body, saying he left her there for a reason, to send a message. Marcel tells all of the witches that if anybody is thinking of joining some kind of rebellion, his rules state that witches can’t practice magic in the Quarter. However, someone told him that Jane-Anne was cooking something up.
Since Marcel has all of the witches there, he tells them that Klaus just happened to show up out of the blue, asking for Jane-Anne. Marcel asks of Sophie would know why, but she just says she doesn’t know. Witches don’t get involved in vampire business. Marcel agrees with her and tells her it would be stupid before he tells her to go back to her restaurant and to cook up some of that famous gumbo, keep the tourist happy.
Turning to his vampires, Marcel tells them to take the body. Sophie immediately reacts, begging them to stop. He tells her that he’s going to keep her sister’s body until she can remember why Klaus is here. She begs Marcel, saying her ody won’t be at peace, but he just tells Sophie that it isn’t his problem.
Back in Mystric Falls, Rebehak receives a call from Elijah while she’s in the tube. She questions if he means to tell her that Marcel is alive and well after all these years. Elijah confirms that she’s right and that their brother seems to have wandered into a war zone, but he hasn’t found Klaus yet. Marcel, who Klaus sired and brought up beneath his own wing, now rules a menagerie of savage vampire running wild, killing in public for any human to come upon. With the treatment of witches there, Elijah doubts that Klaus had any idea what he was walking into.
Rebekah messes with him, telling Elijah that she stopped listening after ‘our brother’. She points out that their hateful, traitorous bastard of a brother’, who has negated any sympathy she once had for him by his repeated efforts to ensure that neither of the two know happiness outside of his verse. Elijah reminds her of the promise to each other, always and forever. Rebekah tells him this is her taking it back, but he reminds her that she’s taken back her promised dozens of times over the centuries, but when their father found them and chased them out of New Orleans-. Before he can finish, Rebekah cuts him off, saying she may be old but she’s not senile; she knows she stuck with Klaus. However, not even three years after that, Klaus stuck a silver dagger in her heart and put her in a slumber for 90 years.
Rebekah questions if Elijah knows why, before telling him it was because she had the audacity to try and live her life on her own without him. Elijah tells her that he thinks their brother is in trouble, so whatever is going on between Marcel and the witches, it’s dire enough that they’d risk bringing an original back to town. The witches lured Klaus back and Elijah wants to know why. Hanging up, Elijah stands outside the restaurante Rousseau’s.
Sophie exits outback of the restaurant, looking at a table full of candles and flowers. She cries and lights another candle as she says that Jane-Anne got her into this, asking her sister to give her the strength to finish it. Sophie looks behind her when the backdoor slams shut. As she looks around, someone jumps into the alleyway behind her but is gone before she can see them.
Finally, Sophie spots a vampire in the alleyway with her and tells him that the doors work. A second is in the enters of the alley, asking if she’s doing magic. She tells him she’s praying for her dead sister before telling them to go ahead and pay their respects. The first is much closer now and tells her not to make this a thing, saying Klaus was looking for Jane-Anne and Marcel wants to know why.
Sophie says she would ask Jane-Anne herself but they can’t since Marcel killed her. The first rushes up to grab Sophie from behind before he is pulled away, disappearing. Suddenly, something drops from above. A heart. The second looks up before looking back at Sophie. Before he can ask her, Elijah lifts him up and throw him on a sign, impaling him and killing him. Sophie is mortified and watches, but Elijah just introduces himself plainly before asking if she heard of him. She confirms she had. Elijah asks if Sophie can tell him what business her family has with his brother.
Later in Lafayette Cemetery, Sophie enters, but Elijah seems to have trouble. She explains that the cemetery is sacred ground and vampires need to be invited in. However, as she’s desperate, she tells him to come in. As Elijah walks inside, Sophie tells him that they can talk freely here. He suggests that she start talking, asking what her sister wanted with his brother. She questions if it isn’t obvious and says they have a vampire problem and need help. Marcel has an army backing him, and the witches have been trying to fight back but haven’t had much luck.
That was, until Jane-Anne met a girl, a werewolf passing through the Quarter from a small town in Viriginia. Sophie explains that the girl had a special connection to his brother. Elijah questions what kind of connection it was. She tells him that apparently the two spend some time together, one thing led to another, and now this werewolf girl is pregnant and Klaus is the father. Elijah tells her that it’s impossible, but Sophie tells him nothing’s impossible, especially when it comes to his brother. She tells him to think about, how they call Klaus the hybrid.
Shouting over her shoulder, Sophie says to bring her out. Elijah watches as the witches bring out Hayley Marshall. Hayley asks who Elijah is when the two see each other. Elijah steps forward and asks the witches to give them a moment.
In private, Elijah questions if the witches have been holding Hayley against her will in the cemetery. She tells him that they lured her out to the bayou and then grabbed her. They did all these weird, witchy tests, but she doesn’t understand how it’s possible since vampires are dead. Elijah tells her that if she hears Klaus’s story, it might explain how this is possible. Reaching out, Elijah cups Hayley’s head and shows her a memory.
In the beginning, their family was human a thousand years ago. Elijah explained that although their mother dabbled in the dark arts, they were largely just a family trying to survive at a time when it was difficult to do so. They were happy back then. That was, until one night, when their youngest brother, Henrik, was killed by their village’s greatest threat, a werewolf. Their family was devasted, none more than Klaus. Desperate to protect the rest of them, their father forced their mother, Ester, to make them stronger with her black magic. Thus, the first vampires were born. But with that speed, that strength, that immortality, came hunger, and no one felt more hungry than Klaus. When Klaus killed for the first time, that was when they found out he really was.
Hayley realizes Klaus is also a werewolf, as that’s how the werewolf curse works; it isn’t activated until you take a life. Elijah reveals that Klaus came out from an affair with a werewolf their mother had hidden from them all. Infuriated by this betrayal, their father forced their mother to cast a spell that would suppress Klaus’s werewolf side, denying him any connection with his true self.
In the pas when it happened, Ester raised a flame while Mikael chained Klaus to a cross of sorts. Mikael told Elijah to come help him, but Klaus begged him to not allow them to do this to him. Unfortunately, Elijah helped their father keep him down.
Hayley calls their dad a dick, which makes Elijah chuckle. Hayley finally officially introduces herself to him, saying he should know her name if he is going to tell her his whole life story. She already knows his name since his family is legendary, and his brother is a notorious psycho, who she slept with.
Elijah can’t and doesn’t excuse Klaus’s behavior, but when their father hunted him, hunted them for centuries, every time they found a moment of happiness, they were forced to flee. Even in New Orleans, where they were the happiness of all. Not long after Klaus broke the spell that prevented him from becoming the Hybrid, he defeated their father, which Elijah thought would make him happy. However, Klaus was angrier than ever. Now, Elijah wonders if the baby might be a way for his brother to find happiness, a way to save him from himself.
Coming over to the two, Sophie is glad that Elijah feels this way because they need his help. Elijah questions what it is Sophie wants and what it has to do with Hayley. She wants Marcel and his vampires out of town. Klaus is the key, since everything Marcel knows about being a vampire, he learned from Klaus. Marcel trusts and looks up to him, so he wouldn’t see the betrayal coming. Elijah agrees with her but points out that he’s sure she’s aware his brother doesn’t like to be told what to do. She says that this is why she brought Elijah here.
Sophie tells Elijah that Marcel drove the werewolves out of town decades ago. She questions if he thinks that Marcel would welcome a Hybrid baby. She tells him to convince Klaus to stay, and no one has to know about the newest member of the Original family. Elijah points out that it sounds remarkably like blackmail. Like earlier said, Sophie’s desperate. With a chuckle, Elijah remarks that he really has his work cut out for him.
On a rooftop, Klaus watches a parade pass by below. Without turning around, he greets Elijah, and the other greets him back. Elijah tells Klaus to come with him, but Klaus tells his brother he’s not going anywhere until he finds whoever is conspiring against him. Elijah, however, just found that out for him.
In the cemetery, Klaus says it’s impossible. Elijah tells Klaus that he said the same thing himself. Klaus doesn’t believe even his brother and says they’re all lying. Vampires cannot procreate. But, as Sophie points out, werewolves can; magic made him a vampire, but he was born a werewolf. Klaus is the Original Hybrid, the first of his kind, and this pregnancy is one of nature’s loopholes.
Klaus points out Hayley as he walks towards her, saying she’s been with someone else and to admit it. Hayley argues back that she’s been held captive for days in an alligator bayou because they think she’s carrying some miracle baby. She asks if he doesn’t think she would have fessed up already if the baby wasn’t his.
Sophie says that her sister gave up her life to perform the spell she needed to confirm this pregnancy. Because of Jane-Anne’s sacrifice, the lives of Hayley and her baby are now controlled by the witches. They can keep them safe, or they can kill them. If Klaus doesn’t help them take down Marcel, Sophie threatens that Hayley won’t live long enough to see her first maternity dress. Elijah jumps in, saying that if the witches want Marcel dead, he’s dead and that he’ll do it himself.
Sophie rejects and says they can’t; they have a clear plan they need to follow, and there are rules. With that, Klaus tilts his head before he turns back to face her, angry she’s trying to command him, threatening him with what they wrongfully perceive to be his weaknesses. Klaus won’t hear any more lies and tries to leave, only for Elijah to tell him to listen.
And so, Klaus does, using his vampiric hearing to listen to the baby’s heartbeat. Even with the proof the baby is real, Klaus says to kill Hayley and the baby; he doesn’t care. Klaus leaves, and with him gone, Hayley wants out too. However, the witches stop her. Elijah tells Sophie that no one touches Hayley and he’ll fix it. Elijah then leaves too.
Walking down the street, Klaus is quickly found by Elijah. Klaus tells Elijah it’s a trick, but Elijah corrects him, saying it’s a gift. It’s their chance to start over, take back everything they’ve lost, everything that was taken from them. Elijah points out that their own parents grew to despise them, their family was ruined, they were ruined. And since then, all Klaus had ever wanted, all that they have ever wanted, was a family.
Klaus tells Elijah that he will not be manipulated. Elijah questions why that matters, as with them, Hayley and her child, his child, live. Klaus tells Elijah he’s going to kill every last one of them. Elijah questions what he’ll do after, if he’ll return to Mystic Falls to resume his life as the hated one, the evil Hybrid. Elijah questions if it’s so important that people quake with fear at the sound of his name. Klaus argued that people quake with fear because he has the power to make them afraid. He questions what this child will offer him and if it will guarantee him power.
Elijah argues that family is power, and that love and loyalty are power. This is what they swore to a thousand years ago before life tore away what little humanity Klaus had left before ego, anger, and paranoia created the person before him, someone he can barely recognize as his brother. Elijah tells him that this is them, that they remain together, always and forever. He tells him that he is asking him to stay and that he will help him and stand by him.
The two of them will build a home here together. Elijah asks him to save Hayley and her child. And Klaus tells him no before walking away.
In the cemetery, Sophie tells the witches that Marcel and his vampires are out of control. Something had to be done, but Agnes asks if the solution was to bring in more vampires. Sophie corrects him and says that they aren’t just any vampires, they’re the Originals. Agnes questions what makes her think that she can control the Hyrbid.
Appearing in the doorway, Elijah says that Sophie can’t and that he’s not entirely sure that he can either. However, now that their coven has drawn Klaus’s ire, Elijah has a question: what prevents his brother from murdering them instead of cooperating? So, Sophie demonstrates. She pricks her hand, and not only does she get hurt, but so does Hayley.
The spell Jane-Anne performed, the one that got her killed, it didn’t just confirm the pregnancy, it linked Sophie to Hayley. So anything that happens to Sophie, happens to Hayley, which makes Hayley’s life is in Sophie’s hands. Klaus may not care about his own child, but it’s clear to Sophie what it means to Elijah. If she had to herself or worse, then she will. Elijah questions if Sophie would really threaten an Original, but Sophie says she has nothing to lose. She tells him that he has until midnight to make Klaus change his mind.
At a party in the former Mikaelson compound, Klaus looks around. Elijah watches from a high balcony, out of sight from the party. Marcel finds him and realizes he’s in a bad mood, asking what’s going on. Klaus questions what’s going on with the witches. Marcel laughs, saying he owes Klaus everything has had but he draws the line at this one as it’s his business. He controls the witches in his town and he asks if they can leave it at that.
Klaus confirms that Marcel called it his town, and when he does, Klaus laughs as when he left a hundred years ago, he was just a pathetic little scrapper who was still trembling from the lashes of the whips of those who kept him down. And now he’s the master of his domain, prince of the city. Klaus wants to know how, and Marcel asks why and if he’s jealous.
Marcel gets it, as a hundred years ago, Klaus built a backwater penal colony into something. He started it but then he left. When Klaus ran, Marcel saw it through. He tells him to look around, saying vampires rule the city now. Marcel got rid of the werewolves, and he even found a way to shut down the witches. The blood never stops flowing and the party never ends. Marcel says that Klaus can pass through, what’s Marcel’s is Klaus’s, but it’s Marcel’s now. His home, his family, his rules.
Klaus asks what happens if someone breaks his rules, so Marcel tells him they die. Mercy’s for the weak, Klaus taught him that. Marcel the corrects him, saying he’s not the prince of the QUarter, he’s the king. He tells Klaus to show some him some respect.
So, in response, Klaus bites a vampire right in front of Marcel. He tells him his friend will be dead by the weekend, meaning he just broke one of Marcel’s rules, and yet he can’t be killed as he is a true immortal. Klaus questions who has the power now.
On a phone call with Rebekah, Elijah tells her that Klaus is ready to give up everything. She questions if this really surprises him, but he tells her that he can see their brother spiraling. Elijah tells Rebekah that the last time he saw Klaus like this, it lasted two hundred years. She tells Elijah to leave Klaus to his temper tantrum and come home, as this misadventure, it would allow the two to reprieve from all of his insanity. Elijah recounts that Klaus was so close, that he would see it in his eyes when he heard the baby’s heartbeat. He knows Klaus wanted it, he could almost taste happiness. However, now his temper has destroyed it.
Elijah says that even if he were to regain Klaus’s sanity, he had already lost Marcel’s trust. So, Elijah is almost out of time to save Hayley. Rebehak wonders if he has lost his mind as well, asking if they’re running an orphanage now. Elijah tells Rebehak to say what she wants about Klaus, he won’t let anything happen to the baby.
Elsewhere, Marcel is also on the phone. He says that once they find Klaus to call Marcel, as he knows how to deal with Klaus. Showing up suddenly, Elijah questions if that’s really so. The other vampires stand up in defense, but Marcel signals them down that everything’s fine. As Elijah takes a seat at Marcel’s table, he says it’s time they had a little chat.
Marcel tells Elijah that if he’s gonna talk, talk. If not, he has things to do. Elijah remarks that Marcel’s grown quite confident over the last century. Marcel says that it’s he and his brother that have gotten cocky, coming to his town like they own the place. Elijah corrects him and points out that they did own the place, and that they were all quite happy here. However, they could never control the witches at the French Quarter, so Elijah questions how Marcel does it. Marcel sighs as he says that Klaus asked the same question and he gave him the same answer: it’s his business. Everything in the Quarter is his business.
Marcel points out that Klaus came into town all nice and friendly, and then he starts to look down his nose at what Marcel’s done, like it’s some cheap knockoff of one of his paintings. Then Klaus gets pissed off and bites one of Marcel’s guys. Elijah apologizes for Klaus’s behavior before he says he assumes Marcel knows that the bite will kill his friend in a matter of days. Elijah then tells Marcel that Klaus’s blood would cure him. Marcel is surprised, but Elijah explains that the blood of a Hybrid cutes a werewolf bit. Which, is a handy thing for levagare in a negotiation.
Marcel questions what kind of negotiations. Elijah wants the body of Jane-Anne to be returned to the witches and her people to be allowed to put her to rest. Marcel questions why Elijah cares about the witches. Using Marcel’s words against him, he says it’s his business.
In the cemetery at midnight, Agnes says that Elijah’s time is up and asks Sophie what she’s going to do now. Sophie says that she’s gonna do what she said she’d do. Sabine asks Sophie if she’s really going to kill Hayley and herself. Agnes says that Klaus doesn’t care about the child. Appearing out of nowhere, Elijah says he does and brings proof of his intent to help them. Elijah shows Jane-Anne’s body, which he procured from Marcel himself.
Elijah tells the witches that Klaus will agree to their terms, but he needs more time. Agnes says that he had his time, and it’s passed. However, Sabine shuts her down and tells her to shut up. For now, Elijah tells them to accept the deal. Hayley and the baby remain unharmed, or Klaus will kill them all. Before he leaves, Elijah tells the witches that he will help Klaus in doing so.
Somewhere else, Klaus walks alone. With a swish, he questions if he didn’t make his desire to be left alone clear. Elijah points out that Klaus demands to be left alone at least once a decade, so his words have ceased to have an impact. Klaus smacks his alcohol bottle and questions why Elijah must keep harping on the baby, saying that the baby will never be born. He continues, saying Hayley is probably dead already.
Angered by his words, Elijah slams Klaus into a wall of furniture, saying Klaus will not walk away from this. Klaus tries to get away, but Elijah stops him. Klaus tells Elijah to tell him go, but Elijah says he won’t, flipping him over and crashing Klaus into some more furniture. Elijah lifts Klaus back up, putting him in a chokehold. Klaus tells Elijah not to make him say it again, but Elijah just says that he will not let, nor will he ever let go. This time, Klaus flips Elijah and tosses him into a metal fence.
Elijah gets up quickly and takes one of the bars from the fence as he says that he’ll stay even if it means saving Klaus from his own stubborn, petulant, vile self. Elijah smacks Klaus and says that if he has to beat him the way their father used to beat Klaus to remind him of his own humanity. He smacks him again, saying to care about things. Klaus stops him from smacking him a third time, grabbing the bar in his hands and using it to smack Elijah this time, sending him flying once more.
Klaus drops the metal bar to the ground as he calls Elijah beyond pathetic. Wiping the blood from his lip, Elijah questions who’s more pathetic: the one who sees hope to make his family whole or the coward who can only see the world through his own fear. Klaus says he hasn't cared about anything for centuries, questioning why Elijah does. Elijah says it’s because he failed Klaus. After all, the first time their father laid a hand on Klaus, Elijah should have stuck him dead. Elijah made a promise to Klaus, always and forever, family above all. Klaus laughs before he helps Elijah back to his feet, calling him a sentimental fool. Elijah agrees with him, but he has lasted this long despite it.
Sometime later, Elijah finds Klaus on a bench and joins him. Narrating over the scene again, Elijah says that the bond of family blesses us with immeasurable power. Elsewhere in bed, Rebekah gets a phone call and declines it without even checking who’s calling. Elijah says that we must respect what comes with it. In the cemetery, Sophie brings the ceremony underway for Jane-Anne to rest in peace. Elijah says that it gives a responsibility, to love without condition, without apology. He says we can never waver from the power of that bond, even when it is tested; the bond nourishes us and gives us strength. Elijah says that without that power, we are nothing.
Klaus tells Elijah that this was his home once, and in his absence, Marcel has gotten everything he ever wanted: power, loyalty, family. Klaus says he made Macel in his image, and he has bettered him. Klaus wants what Marcel has, he wants it back. Klaus wants to be king. Elsewhere, in a room full of vampires, Marcel checks on his sick friend who has a werewolf bite. Elijah questions if that all the child needs, a grab for power. Klaus asks what it means to him. Elijah thinks that this child could offer him the one thing that he had never believed he had. Klaus asks what that it, so Elijah answers that it is the unconditional love of family. Klaus tells Elijah to tell Sophie Deveraux that they had a deal.
The next day, in the Mikaelson Mansion, Hayley starts taking sheets off the furniture. When Elijah checks on her, Hayley says it’s just dust and calls the place ancient. He says it should serve their purposes before explaining that it’s a sanctuary from their business in the Quarter. Elijah explains that for the moment, Hayley is the most important member of the family, and she needs a good home.
Curious, Elijah asks if anyone has asked Hayley how she feels. She questions if he means about having a miracle baby with a psychotic one-night stand. He corrects her and says about being a mother. Hayley explains that she was abandoned when she was born and her adoptive parents kicked her out the second she turned into a wolf. With that, she doesn’t know how to feel about being a mother as she never had a good one. Elijah promises Hayley that he will always protect her, making her smile.
Watching from the doorway, Klaus says that the noble Elijah always keeps his word. Elijah asks if it’s done, and Klaus confirms it is, his underhanded deal worked well. Marcel was ‘only too happy’ to accept Klaus’s blood even as he accepted his heartfelt apologies. His friend lives and Klaus remains a welcome guest in the French Quarter. Klaus’s only concern now is the coven of impudent witches. Elijah believes them to be honorable as they did release Hayley to him. Although, they haven’t been entirely forthcoming. Elijah points out that Marcel has something that they need. The coven doesn’t want Marcel dead so there needs to be a reason.
Somewhere else in New Orleans, Davina Claire is using magic to lit then put out a candle. Marcel walks up behind her and asks if all is quiet outside. Davina Claire tells him that the witches know better than to use magic since they know she can sense when they do. Davina Claire then asks about the ‘old ones’. She says they’re dangerous and she doesn’t want them to hurt Marcel. Marcel checks that she’s talking about the Originals, saying that with as powerful as she is, they don’t stand a chance.
Back with the Mikaelson, Elijah says that in addition to the ‘weapon’ he uses to control the witches, Marcel has assembled a small army of vampires. Working together, Elijah thinks they could destroy them from the inside. Klaus questions if Rebekah has stopped her pouting long enough to join them. Elijah sighs as he tells Klaus that Rebekah has made her disinterest clear.
Klaus jokes that he gathers that it was one too many times daggered and shoved into a box. Or, Klaus more so assumes, Rebekah doesn’t share Elijah’s unwavering belief that he can be saved. Elijah thinks that Rebekah may surprise them, as the three of them did all swear the same vow. Klaus hopes she stays away, as in his plan to steal from Marcel that which he holds most dear, he has realized one massive vulnerability, a weakness Marcel could exploit. Elijah questions what it is.
Klaus tells him it’s Elijah before stabbing him in the heart with a dagger. Elijah screams out in surprise as Klaus asks for his forgiveness, catching him and keeping him upright. He tells Elijah there is no power in love, that mercy makes you weak, and family makes you weak. Klaus says that if he’s going to win this war, he has to do it alone.
