— The Mikaelsons say goodbye to Finn
|
Behind the Black Horizon is the seventeenth episode of the third season of The Originals and the sixty-first episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
ELIJAH AND FINN TRAVEL TO MYSTIC FALLS IN THIS EPISODE DIRECTED BY JOSEPH MORGAN — When it's discovered that Freya has been kidnapped and is in the hands of a dangerous new threat, the Mikaelson brothers are forced to put aside their differences in order to save her before it's too late. Following a lead that brings them to Mystic Falls, Elijah and Finn run into deputy Matt Donovan, who does not take well to new vampires in his town. Meanwhile, Klaus and Hayley work together to uncover the motive behind one of Lucien's secret agendas, while a troubling shift in Kol's behavior leaves Davina concerned for their future together. Cami also appears.
Plot[]
Lucien leads a bound Freya and an unwilling Vincent to a clearing in the woods. He's surprised that, as two of the most powerful witches, they can't sense they're on hallowed ground—Mystic Falls, in the exact area Esther spelled her children into vampires. Lucien wants to become an upgrade of an Original, and he has everything he needs to do it. He says Vincent will do the spell, and bites Freya's hands for her blood.
Davina and Kol arrive at St. James Infirmary, but Vincent didn't meet up like he said he would. She feels something is off, and finds his phone and a vial of his blood.
Finn, Elijah, Klaus, Kol and Davina listen to what Vincent says in the video: He recorded it there because it's free from magic, and magic is their enemy. The Ancestors are forcing him to help Lucien Castle, but he wants no part in it. If Davina doesn't help him, Freya will get killed. The Ancestors had him put up a cloaking spell so no one could track them. But there's a loophole…
Finn asks how he's the loophole, and Kol says that even after all this time, there's an echo of a body-soul connection between the two. Davina doesn't know if it's possible, but she has Vincent's blood; if she takes Finn's blood and does the spell right, she should be able to track Vincent to his location.
Kol finds Finn's selflessness hypocritical, as he recently wanted to kill Davina for trapping him in his body but now can't wait to be spelled by her to find Freya. Elijah says Finn will go with him, and Kol to stay with Davina, and he lashes out at Elijah too, saying they're in this mess because Elijah didn't destroy the White Oak when they had the chance. Davina says she doesn't know this kind of magic, so she needs him. Kol calms down.
Hayley has put Hope in Mary's hands, and she learns from Klaus that Lucien has taken Freya. But Kingmaker kidnapping werewolves and Lucien's abduction of Freya can't be a coincidence, so Klaus says he will let his brothers do their own work while he and Hayley team up to find out what's going on in Lucien's buildings.
Freya's hands bleed into an ancient bowl made of stone. Lucien pours a large vial of unknown liquid into it, and he gives Vincent a notebook with the spell inside. It's Esther's spell that created the Originals, which took an entire coven ages to reverse-engineer it. Then he had to get his hands on the White Oak. He drops the bullet into the bowl.
Elijah and Finn have been heading northeast for an hour, but since the spell isn't as strong as a locator spell, Davina can only narrow it down to Northern Virginia. Kol is surprised, saying it's their birthplace. Mystic Falls is where they were turned into vampires. He tells her to be more precise, lashing out at her but tries to calm down. He has a different idea, a Blood Rider—a Tibetan singing bowl he had made cast into a dark object in the 1800s. It's like an echo chamber. They can amplify the connection. But the bowl is in Camille's hands, and says he'll just have to pry it from her, but Davina scolds him. Camille is her friend; she'll get it from her, Kol just needs to behave.
Lucien tells Freya he used to think of the Mikaelsons as gods, until Klaus "stole" Aurora away from him and their lives were taken by compulsion for a hundred years. Once free, he realized the Mikaelsons weren't worthy of their gifts. He then decided to become what he thinks he's always been, "their better." He's spent every second into achieving this moment. But no, he didn't fake the prophecy; he found the prophecy foretelling the Originals' demise, and it was true, with him as its living embodiment.
Finn is hurt and disgusted that "900 years in a box" just rolls off Elijah's tongue as if time had passed without consequences. Elijah counters that they never experienced anything, the passage of time the least. But Finn argues that being daggered for decades versus centuries are two very different things; "it started off as a dim pinprick of light, growing brighter year after year. A slow consciousness that I was paralyzed, entombed in my own mind. That despair... utter loneliness... All amplified and made endless." Elijah is speechless.
Camille tried to find the Tibetan singing bowl. Kol calls them "stolen goods," but Camille's family didn't steal them, she says, they just kept the deadly toys he left strewn about the city from falling into deadlier hands. Kol claims he's here now so he should just take them back. His vampire face comes out, but Davina calls out to him to get out. He leaves. Camille tells her she recognizes that look, from her uncle. Kol is cursed, she's sure of it. She gives Davina the bowl.
Finn and Elijah walk through Mystic Falls, but Matt comes and points his gun at them. He's run every vampire out of town, and the Mikaelsons aren't welcome either. He's surprised there's yet another Mikaelson, Freya, but he's unconcerned about her and continues to point his gun at them.
Vincent passes out after completing the spell. Lucien pours the liquid into two huge vials, drinking one of them.
Hayley and Klaus find the buildings are the exact same, with the same art and a compelled receptionist. But a S.W.A.T team enters after the receptionist presses a button under the table, and the two hybrids fight them all. They find a room full of unconscious werewolves strapped to medical equipment, and a dead vampire in another.
Finn gets a headache from Davina's spell working, but he knows where Vincent is. Vincent tries to attack Lucien, but the Ancestors overwhelm and knock him out.
Finn, Matt, and Elijah arrive. Lucien uses Freya as a shield, but Finn risks it by shooting Matt's gun anyway. Lucien dies, and Freya is healed, but she tries to tell them Lucien wanted to be shot at, to complete the final step. Lucien rises, but Matt's bullets ricochet off him, and knocks Matt out. He bites Finn. Freya puts a barrier spell around them, and Lucien decides he'll just wait and enjoy the hunt.
Kol, angry, punches into a mirror. Davina tells him what Camille told her, and thinks she's right. Kol, still in rage, tells her that while she may think he's cursed, he thinks it's everybody getting into his business and not knowing when to back off. He speeds away. Davina touches his blood from the broken mirror and chants a spell. She appears afraid by what she learns.
Hayley urges Klaus to leave to heal Finn, while she stays behind to torch the building. She learns that the werewolves are from seven packs—Deep Water, Malraux, BasRoq, Barry, Poldark. He's a Paxton. One werewolf was a Crescent, but he died. The people working for Lucien kept pumping wolf venom into the vampire and then healing her, until the last time; they shot her with something so powerful, there was no saving her.
Finn is healed, and he finally has experienced the coveted "Always and Forever," but he starts vomiting up blood and hurting again. Desperate, Klaus orders Kol to get Davina, but Finn rejects their help. He wants to die. As he slowly desiccates, even Kol sheds a tear, even though his behavior toward Finn has been hostile and made even worse through his curse (which Camille recognized and Davina confirms through her spell.)
They each say their farewells, each scattering Finn's ashes into the river. Klaus promises to avenge his death.
Vincent and Davina meet up in St. James Infirmary. He tells her the Ancestors have a strong say at what he can and can't do; Davina says the Ancestors are manipulating Kol as well, as his blood is infused with their magic which means they corrupted the spell Davina used to bring him back. He tells her he used to respect the Ancestors, but slowly saw they just use people to do their whims. If they disobey, the Ancestors will shun them, cripple them, even kill them. The Ancestors got to be stopped, and it's up to the two of them to do it.
Hayley tells them all what she and Klaus have been up to. Since then, she's found out that Lucien was harvesting venom but not for a cure. He's created a more lethal strain. Klaus and Hayley are from two of the original wolf bloodlines, but Lucien's venom is derived from all seven packs, giving him a bite not even Klaus can cure. There were two vials of serum. Klaus finds Aurora's imprisonment empty.

Behind the Scenes[]
- This is the first episode of the series in which Charles Michael Davis does not appear.
- Joseph Morgan is the first cast member of The Originals to direct an episode of the series, and the third one to direct an episode on The Vampire Diaries or The Originals, with the other two being Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder.
- Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan) is the fifth cast member from The Vampire Diaries to guest star in The Originals. He follows Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood), Nina Dobrev (Tatia), Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) and Leslie-Anne Huff (Rayna Cruz).
- Even though Joe is a first-time TV director, we did not go easy and give him a "light" episode — it had big fights, multiple scenes with five-six principals, VFX, SFX, etc., and he was unflappable, enthusiastic, prepared and was an absolute joy for the cast and crew to work with — earning him the name Captain Morgan. The cast especially loved working with him — and everyone came prepared to impress him. Joseph did have a little difficulty with one actor in particular — the guy who plays Klaus Mikaelsson, but after a good talking-to (in a mirror), Captain Morgan was able to straighten the guy out.[2]
- It was fun to watch Joseph direct himself and critique his own performances. A playback monitor was set up so that he could first act in a scene, then immediately watch it on playback, and then adjust and correct.[2]
- Daniel and Caspar did their own "stunt" driving by whisking Elijah's Porsche past the "Welcome to Mystic Falls" sign. Daniel drove so fast that the cameraman almost got whiplash trying to capture it. Caspar expressed his utter disappointment that Daniel didn't go faster.[2]
- At one point our makeup people had so much oozing pus on a dead body that appears in the show, that even Joe and Declan (who both LOVE that sort of thing) had to step in and "de-pusify" in order to make it broadcastable.[2]
- It snowed off and on during the shooting of our big outdoor fight sequence. So we had to shoot a lot of the fight twice, both with snow and without, in order piece together either a "fight in the snow" or a "fight with no snow."[2]
- Though there were a lot of fights and special effects in this episode, Joe really made it a point to focus on the acting, making sure all of the actors got as much prep time as they wanted. Joseph, Daniel and Caspar got together to rehearse on their own time.[2]
- We believe our Kingmaker S.W.A.T. team guys were a real S.W.A.T. team. The most fun day on set was watching Joe and Phoebe wipe the walls and floor with that swat team. We all had to wear protective ear plugs because the sound of arms-fire was so loud and continuous.[2]
- In honor of his first directing gig, Joseph bought himself a fancy puffy jacket to keep him warm during our cold outdoor shoots ... but ended up burning a hole in it by standing too close to a heater. Declan and I laughed until we each burnt holes in our own fancy puffy jackets later on that same day.[2]
