The Carnival of Vampires was a centuries old charade that a small group of vampires used as a hunting ground to feed. The event was held in an unknown location, surrounded by woods.

Season Four[]
In Follow the Sound of My Voice, Valentina and her sister, Luna make their way into a carnival. The Carnival Barker boasts of Magnus the Magnificent, though upon seeing everything Luna wants to leave. Valentina wants to stay, promising her sister her necklace if she makes it all the way through the Haunted Tunnel. Among all the scary figures, Luna steps away from her, but finds a bloody handprint on a mirror. As she takes a closer look, she sees Magnus the Magnificent. Luna turns around and her sister is gone. Magnus tells her that she has run away. He torments her, explaining he could make her forget, but believes no one would believe her anyways.
Later, Lizzie and Hope come upon the same carnival. Though Lizzie is less enthusiastic, Hope decides to use this opportunity to make sure Lizzie can handle her new vampire powers. Lizzie believes to have a handle on her powers just as well as Hope does; her mother is even a vampire, she reminds her. Hope adds, who's never around, her father is an alcoholic vegetable, and her sister left her behind for a walkabout. Lizzie loses control over her magic, causing several popcorn containers of carnival goers to explode, proving her point. She can push her buttons too easily, and her emotional stability has never been at the top of her résumé. If Lizzie can't control her emotions, then she has no shot at controlling her powers. That makes her useless to her. Their first lesson in Vampire 101, is mind compulsion. Lizzie tries to compel the Ticket Taker, but fails. Demonstrating her skill, Hope compels their entry into the carnival, as well as all the cash from the ticket sales.
Hope next has Lizzie demonstrate her control over her strength while stepping up to the High Striker Carnie. She wants her to get as close as she can to the top without actually touching the bell. The closest between them wins. Using a single finger, Hope makes the striker come just short of the bell. Lizzie, however, destroys the game, causing the striker to throw off the bell. The carnie is confused at what he's just witnessed, though their exploits don't go unnoticed to the Barker.
Hope rubs it in that she's seven to Lizzie's zero at Vampire 101. Lizzie wants to know what she must do to get this over with and Hope gives her a final test. Hope tells her that when they first got here, they passed a vendor selling stuffed animals. She wants her to find that vendor's voice with her enhanced hearing. All she needs to do is concentrate and filter everything else out, to just focus on that one voice in the crowd. As Lizzie listens, she hears Luna crying and goes to find her. She tries to comfort her and learns that her sister is missing, that someone took her. Hope hands her some money, telling her to go get her some cotton candy. With the girl gone, Hope intends to leave, but Lizzie refuses and wants to help. Hope reminds her about no extra complications, and this is just that.
As night falls on the carnival, Lizzie tries to get Hope to help her with Luna, believing it will be good training. Hope believes this to be more about Josie, to which Lizzie eventually admits to. Hope passes, as she's walking into an easily avoidable risk because she's letting her emotions control her-she's failed the most important test that there is. If she can be manipulated that easily then she's unless to her. Hope sets her loose, deciding that their partnership is over.
Lizzie goes through the Haunted Tunnel finding a bloody handprint. As Hope leaves the carnival, the Barker approaches her. He's been looking for her. She and her friend have been putting on quite a show, beating their games, not caring who knew what they were. Lizzie continues to explore the tunnel and eventually finds Valentina's corpse. She's been attacked and killed by a vampire. The Barker gives Hope a warning. They don't take kindly to strangers poaching on their hunting grounds. Lizzie, however, is attacked and drugged.
Hope realizes they're a carnival full of vampires, though the Barker corrects her, most of the carnies are humans. There's only a few of them left. They prefer "Creatures of the Night," because it's more elegant and from the old days. For them to keep a low profile, they follow very strict rules as not to bring too much attention., like choosing their victims carefully. Hope realizes he's talking about Valentina and Luna, as they kept one of the sisters alive. Their leader has a peculiar hunting style and prefers to let one witness survive. Believing her to be a vampire, he explains that they've maintained this little charade for hundreds of years, because they do things the right way. Hope, however, doesn't like being vamp-splained. The Barker gives her two options, to join them and learn their ways, or to fight someone who is centuries older than her. Hope attacks first, using her magic, she telekinetically chokes him. Applying enough magic, she breaks his neck, decapitating him in the process, something she didn't know she could do.
Still drugged, Lizzie calls out to Hope for help. Hope disposes of the Barker, dropping his body into a dumpster. Hope hears Lizzie and comes to her rescue. With Lizzie saved, Hope has a new test for her. They're going to hunt some condescending vampires.
Magnus the Magnificent takes center stage, asking for two volunteers. Lizzie and Hope raise their hand and join him on stage.
For Magnus' next trick he attempts to compel Hope, unaware of what she is. The trick fails and he turns to try the same thing on her. Again he fails. Realizing he has some troublemakers he calls out to his vampires to remove them, but none answer his call. Lizzie tells them they're indisposed. Hope commands him not to leave and she and Hope telekinetically take a saw and dismember him where he stands. The crows applaud what happens.
Hope hears sirens, meaning it's their cue to leave. Lizzie wants to talk to Luna one last time. Lizzie kind of knows what she's going through. What comes next is going to be scary and hard and the pain will probably never go away. She tells Luna that she is going to miss her and that's okay. She compels Luna that she'll feel something else; she'll always feel her sister beside her, no matter what, like she's a part of her. She gives her Valentina's necklace as her parents call for her.
