“ | Papa Tunde said he wanted to empower the witches. Mostly, he wanted money and territory. Klaus and Elijah weren't about to give him either. He didn't like that, so he went on a rampage. No one was safe. Not the humans in the faction. Not the Guerrera werewolves. He even went after the witches who opposed him. Elijah offered a truce. He gave his word, in fact, but Klaus, being Klaus, he had another idea. | ” |

Summary[]
FLASHBACKS TO 1919 — Marcel, still angered by recent Events, refuses to help Klaus when a gruesome discovery is made in the Cauldron. Rebekah is on alert when she uncovers the remnants of a sacrifice down by the docks and immediately realizes that it's the work of a dangerous warlock from their past. Meanwhile, when Elijah gets some information that Rebekah may be in trouble, he and Hayley set off to find her. At Rousseau's, Camille confronts Marcel, who opens up and shares some details of his past with her, but things quickly spiral out of control when an unexpected visitor shows up. Finally, a violent confrontation ensues when Klaus faces off against a powerful force with an unmatched advantage over him.
Plot[]
Celeste meets the witches that she resurrected in the graveyard where they look upon a list of names on a tomb.
A group of witches gather around the same graveyard many years ago to welcome the warlock Papa Tunde, who warns that a great darkness has taken over the French Quarter. He offers to use his powers of sacrifice to help the witches fight back against the vampires and other monsters that roam the city. But in return, they need to accept him and his family into their coven and make him their leader.
Meanwhile, Elijah and Klaus are in the middle of making a deal with the werewolves when they are suddenly interrupted by Papa Tunde, who wants to claim part of the Quarter as his own on behalf of the witches.
Extremely happy after his trip to Mystic Falls, Klaus pardons Thierry out of Marcel's garden. Since the witches' powers continue to wane due to the failure of the harvest, Klaus sends some of his day-walker vamps out to lead a rousting. But Marcel is not in the mood to celebrate—still depressed over Davina's death. Klaus starts giving him a hard time, but they're soon interrupted by Diego, who informs them that two of their men have been killed in some sort of ritual.
Elsewhere, Rebekah informs Elijah of her secret alliance with Thierry against Klaus. Elijah asks her not to do anything to provoke Klaus, but Rebekah doesn't listen. She goes to meet Thierry, but they are interrupted by Papa Tunde, who desiccates Rebekah and begins performing a sacrificial ritual on her.
Marcel shows up at the bar looking for Sophie, but finds Cami instead. They start drinking and Marcel tells Cami a story of what happened to someone who tried to go up against Klaus.
During World War I, Klaus is hosting a dance party. He informs Marcel about Papa Tunde's request to own a piece of the Quarter. But while Elijah wants peace, Klaus has other plans. After figuring out that Papa Tunde harvested his power from his sons, Klaus has them both killed and presents their heads to Papa Tunde in a box right before killing him (or so he thought).
Papa Tunde finishes performing the ritual over Rebekah and informs Celeste/Sabine that he can now channel the power of an Original vampire. He tracks down Marcel at the bar and attacks both Marcel and Cami.
Klaus runs into Sophie, who explains that the attacks seems to be part of an offering. The more people killed, the more power the person gets. Klaus receives an urgent call from Cami about Papa Tunde's attack. Klaus rushes over and tries to intervene, but Papa Tunde is too strong with Rebekah's added power and prepares to desiccate Klaus.
When Rebekah doesn't answer her phone, Elijah grows worried and interrogates Thierry to find out what happened. He tells Elijah and Hayley of her location and they're able to free her from the boundary spell with a few drops of Hayley's blood since her baby is a quarter witch.
As soon as the circle is broken, Papa Tunde is immediately affected, but disappears before Klaus can finish him off. Cami offers Marcel her blood in order to heal him.
Marcel and Rebekah start talking and they determine that Marcel had been the one who brought Papa Tunde to town in the first place back in the day. He thought it would be enough to drive Klaus out of New Orleans so he and Rebekah could be together. That's when Rebekah informed him that there's only one man that could make Klaus flee: his father. They began plotting to lure Mikael there.
Klaus rallies his fellow vampires for support against Papa Tunde's continued threat. He wonders how someone he killed years ago could just suddenly reappear. Sophie believes someone stole the harvest power to resurrect four different witches, but it could possibly be undone... meaning Davina could come back. As long as Klaus can prevent him from killing any more nightwalkers they all should be safe. That's when Klaus remembers that Marcel's garden has a whole bunch of vampires imprisoned there who are sitting ducks. But they're too late. Papa Tunde had already sacrificed all of them.
Papa Tunde presents Celeste with the blade that has now absorbed all the power from all the supernatural creatures that he's killed. It's strong enough now to do things worse than death to an Original, but there's still one more offering to be made: Celeste slits Papa Tunde's throat and holds the blade triumphantly in her hand.

Cultural References[]
- Dance Back From The Grave is the title of a song by Marc Cohn. It is a track from his album Join the Parade which was inspired by Hurricane Katrina which struck New Orleans in 2005.
- Some funeral traditions popular in New Orleans involve a march by the family, friends, and a brass band from the home, funeral home or church to the cemetery. Throughout the march, the band plays somber dirges and hymns. A change in the tenor of the ceremony takes place, after either the deceased is entombed, or the hearse leaves the procession and members of the procession say their final goodbye and they "cut the body loose". After this the music becomes more upbeat, often starting with a hymn or spiritual number played in a swinging fashion, then going into popular hot tunes. There is raucous music and cathartic dancing where onlookers join in to celebrate the life of the deceased. Those who follow the band just to enjoy the music are called the second line, and their style of dancing, in which they walk and sometimes twirl a parasol or handkerchief in the air, is called second lining. So you could be said to be "dancing back from the grave" in celebration of a life of a loved one.
Quotes[]
- Diego: "We got a problem."
- Marcel: "It's two more of my guys gone. Nice job, Captain."
- Sophie: "It's sacrificial magic. The more guys they kill, the more power they get."
- Klaus: "I want the head of whoever did this on a stick."
- Papa Tunde: "I will hurt Klaus Mikaelson as he hurt me, and when I'm done, he'll wish that he could die."
- Rebekah: "I'm tired of being controlled and threatened by our tyrant brother. If you want to stop a bully, you need the power to stand up to them."
- Elijah: "I expect such behavior from Niklaus. It's so very disappointing when it comes from you, Rebekah. Do you not see that, in his way, he is making an effort here? He's invited us back into our family home, he yearns for our family to be reunited."
- Rebekah: "Yes, he's in a brilliant mood now, but for how long? It's his trick, Elijah. He lulls you into a false sense of camaraderie and kinship, and then he turns on you like a snake. I have fallen for it every time, and wind up with a dagger in my chest for my trouble. No more!"
- Elijah: "I believe that he is approaching some semblance of peace here. Leadership may be a good thing for him. Now, sister, please, I ask you-- if you cannot support him, then at least do nothing to provoke him."
- Elijah: "I asked you to cease these petty moves against our family! Yet, you conspire with this fool. Is this what it's come to, making moves against your own blood?"
- Rebekah: "Don't you try and shame me. Nik grows more powerful by the day and you do nothing but encourage him."
- Elijah: "I offer him my council because it's clear to me he means to make this city our home. And perhaps leading these... derelicts will curb some of these impulses. Grant him some degree of happiness."
- Rebekah: "You always talk of Nik's happiness, but for 1,000 years, he's robbed me of any chance of my own. What about me, Elijah? Am I not a concern for you?"
- Elijah: "We all make sacrifices in the name of this family, Rebekah, but know this-- I will never stand against you or Niklaus."
- Rebekah: "What about Hayley? Nothing I conspire to do, none of my treachery will harm this family as much as your feelings for her. You're a hypocrite, Elijah. You would chose love over family, yet condemn me for doing the same."
