Summary[]
KLAUS FACES OFF WITH AN UNLIKELY FOE – When a powerful weapon that could take down the Mikaelsons for good ends up in the wrong hands, Klaus finds himself in a tense standoff with an unlikely foe. Meanwhile, Elijah's attempt to reclaim control of the Strix leads to a violent showdown and the emergence of a potential new leader. Elsewhere, when a new coven of witches tries to influence Davina into helping them locate the elusive weapon, she quickly realizes she may be in over her head. Hayley, Marcel, Cami and Vincent also appear.
Plot[]
Vincent has cloaked Camille and him inside the cemetery, and put a boundary spell around them so vampires can't get in.
Davina sees Ariane's dead body, and Aya tells her it's what happens when one makes a deal with Elijah. She wants Davina and the other witches to use their magic to find out what she knows. Davina is hesitant because it's disrespectful to the dead, but Aya will do whatever it takes to get the information and ensure her and the sireline's survival.
Camille and Klaus argue over stealing each other's belongings. Vincent advises them to hurry before someone finds out about the White Oak. Camille wants this all behind them, she doesn't want to endanger the Mikaelsons but only want what's hers. She can't fight Aurora fair and square without the Dark Objects. Klaus surrenders, leaving to pick up the rest of the objects.
Hayley asks Elijah why he can't just kill Aya, and he shares with her their past. Aya was one of his first sires, after Tristan. They loved each other and created The Strix, but he abandoned her and them when Mikael came. Elijah left them to be slaughtered, and Aya hasn't forgiven him, nor can he forgive himself. Elijah leaves, to distract Aya from the White Oak business.
The Sisters and Davina are unable to reach into Ariane's mind, so they pause for an hour, leaving Davina alone. Davina consecrates her, as she's been taught since childhood that an unconsecrated witch would never find peace. But, as she does so, she sees what Ariane's knows.
Elijah sees Aya enter the Davilla Estate, where she tells the vampires that her witches have made a discovery Elijah wants kept hidden. Elijah comes in and interrupts her, saying she can't simply ascend to leadership. As the founding father, the head of the sireline, only he can choose the next leader. Elijah pulls out the Charter of the Strix. Aya invokes the rite of Ludum Regale, a contest of strength and cunning. Aya challenges him to a duel, choosing strength over cunning.
Davina performs a spell that will allow her spirit to spy on Klaus. She sees him packing up the Dark Objects, when Hayley comes in and tells him Hope is upset over the loss of the toy horse Camille stole. Klaus mentions it as "the very means of [his] demise." Davina pulls out of the spell, but one of the Sisters, Madison, reveals she wants to leave the coven, and forcibly enters Davina's head for the information.
The Strix and Elijah enter Marcel's gym, where the duel takes place. Elijah has the upper hand in the fight. Aya says she'd rather die than follow Elijah. Marcel stops the fight, and takes the Charter. He tells them to find him before midnight, or he becomes the leader, and he runs off.
Madison puts a spell over the cemetery, so Camille and Vincent don't hear Klaus. She ambushes him and snaps his neck, while the Sisters attack Vincent. Camille escapes, but Madison catches up to her. She snaps all her bones, and Camille accidentally drops the toy horse. Camille uses a dark object that causes pain to Madison, but it doesn't hold for long. Madison disappears.
Marcel has become the new leader. The contest was never meant to be just a fist-fight, but a leader must use have more brains than brawn. Since he knows every nook and cranny in the Quarter, he beat them all. Elijah nearly rips his heart out. Marcel tells him he'll violate his own Charter if he kills Marcel. Elijah lets go.
Camille blames Klaus. The vulnerability he feels is what Camille has felt, which is why she's desperate to protect herself. Davina calls Camille, but she's too late. Davina, though, reveals different news, that Madison is working for Aurora.
Aurora is happy to have the weapon. Madison wants to be freed from serving The Strix. Aurora feeds on her, while Madison screams until she's dead.
Marcel asks if Elijah really had to punch his hand through his chest, but Elijah defends himself as being in character. The moment took him over. He compliments Marcel on his performance, The Strix were completely distracted.
Ariane's spirit visits Davina. She's with the Ancestors, with Kol. She tells Davina that things aren't going well for him, and Davina is the only one who can help him now. The coven's magic comes at a high price, but it's powerful. If she doesn't use it to save Kol, Davina will lose him to a fate worse than death.
Aya reveals to Marcel that The Strix have a contingency plan, and a reason why she recruited Davina. With the right witches, the correct spell and the precise binding agent, there's a way to rid themselves of the link to their sire.
A man gives Aurora a set of bullets made with the White Oak. She tells him it's for an entire family of monsters.

Trivia[]
- Antagonists: Aya, Madison, Camille O'Connell, and Aurora de Martel
- According to Michael Narducci, Elijah's history as a nobleman has some pretty interesting fatal flaw; Elijah has ethics, principles and a code that he follows, but he has a very strict hierarchy where anything can be thrown out the window if it is in service of his family. Elijah still believes very much in always and forever, and in doing so he have condemned himself to a very difficult immortal existence.[1]
Body Count[]
- Madison - Blood loss; killed by Aurora de Martel
Continuity[]
- Aurora and Tristan were last seen in A Ghost Along the Mississippi.
Locations[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- There were five full flashback scenes in this episode. Due to the fact that only a marginal amount of shooting actually aired, the season three DVD contains large amounts of never-seen before footage.
- Madison was originally played by Switched at Birth's Vanessa Marano. When we watched the episode, we realized we needed to shoot two new scenes to flesh her character out better. However she had started back to work on her own show, and no matter how many mountains they tried to move, we couldn't get her back to Atlanta in time to make our airdate. We had to cast a new witch (Rebecca Blumhagen) and put her into the scenes that Vanessa used to be in. If you watch closely, you can still see the back of Vanessa's head in certain shots.
- The moment where Klaus tries to attack Madison but instead slams into the barrier was inspired by this horrifying video of a gorilla at the zoo trying to escape.[2]
- This episode was the second lowest viewed episode of the series with 0.80 million.

Quotes[]
- Elijah (to The Strix): "Today is the day I take back what is mine. Do I hear any objections here?"
- Aya: "I challenge you to a duel."
- Klaus: "Camille!"
- Elijah: "Hello everyone. Wonderful to see you all. Aya! Don't we look so very comfortable indeed leading Tristan's little circus. Sadly, one does not ascend to the position of leader. Kind of has to be on my consent. You see, I am the maker, the creator. The founding father. I am the one who chooses the leader here. And fortunately for every last one of you, I have an excellent candidate in mind. See today is the day I take back what is mine. Do I here any objections?"
- Cami: "I wouldn't have taken it if Klaus hadn't confiscated my Dark Objects so technically, this is his fault."
- Vincent: "You try explaining that to him."
