Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found is the fifteenth episode of the fourth season of Legacies and the sixty-third episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
ALWAYS AND FOREVER – Hope continues to be swirled in confusion and fighting her humanity, which results in her seeing the people who mean the most to her: Rebekah, Marcel, Kol, and Freya. Kaleb wants to introduce Cleo to his world, including those who had the most profound influence on his path. Meanwhile, Lizzie devises a plan to get in someone's good graces.[2]
Plot[]
Hope wakes up on a bench outside of Rousseau's. She begins shouting to her humanity until passerbyers give her weird looks, believing she's crazy. Rebekah steps out of Rousseau's, reassuring her that everything lost, can be found. Hope retorts with a threat, but she disregards it, welcoming her home. She mistakes it for a veiled reference to her humanity, and tells her it's never coming back.
MG finds Alaric on the floor. He fell trying to take a couple of steps without his cane. He asks about "Operation Humanity" and MG confirms that Hope is out under a spell. They'll know the outcome when she wakes up. Given his physical limitations, he'll hold things down while MG talks with the squad about what's to come. That, however, is the very reason he's come to talk to Alaric. He doesn't know how to prepare them for a war with the gods. Alaric wants him to convince them not to fight. The scenarios they ran with Professor Vardemus made it painfully clear that they were likely to suffer some casualties. Though he can accept it if it's himself, he doesn't want to lose a single student in this battle who is not fully aware of the risks. He tells MG that if anyone's still on the fence, now's the time to push them off into safer pastures. MG agrees and questions if he's okay alone. Alaric is, and he has an old friend stopping by for some advice. After MG leaves, he pulls out the prism and a bottle of bourbon.
Cleo joins Kaleb in Atlanta for breakfast at a café. Kaleb assures her that they are the best in the city. Though Cleo has never been, she believes him and asks about their next plans. Kaleb explains that his family is having a huge cookout and even though it's their first date, he wants to introduce her to everybody, hundreds of Hawkins. Cleo goes pale with worry, though Kaleb is only joking. Since she showed him a bit of her story, he wanted to do the same and there's someone he's like her to meet. He believes that she could help her with everything she's going through with her magic. She questions if this friend of his knows they're coming. He only tells her that she probably does and not because he's told her.
Lizzie and Aurora hold Ben captive and chained to a tree. Lizzie rushes Aurora to cut him open and retrieve the key, but Aurora questions if she's ever witnessed how complicated the inner workings of the human body are. Aurora's only hesitation is what to do with the key once they have it. Lizzie retorts that they obviously wake the time god, whoever that is, which proves Aurora's point. They lack necessary information and that every move they make must be considered more than the one before. If Jen was telling them the truth about the key, she questions Lizzie about how they would identify the sarcophagus that holds the god they're after. She also questions what they do with Jen herself, who's clearly loath to raise any god. Lizzie dismisses the question, believing that she's a wimp all of a sudden. Aurora hands her the key to let her do the job herself. Lizzie attempts to cut into Ben's torso, but stops short. She'd rather talk about getting past Jen. Ben, however, is now awake and chimes in on their conversation. He explains that his half-sister is far more intelligent than she appears. Lizzie begs to differ because she's named her metal shop "Torch 'n Toke." Aurora points out that they don't trust each other, let alone him since he doesn't have any skin in the game. Ben begs to differ and believes they can work together.
Hope believes her aunt to be in her head and wants to wake up from this nightmare. Rebehkah points out that she had just believed it was a memory, but Hope shrugs it off. She's had a rough couple of days. Rebekah is already aware, having been in contact with Dr. Saltzman. Hope wasn't even aware they were on speaking terms, pointing out that no one for their family ever makes it to the parent-teacher conferences. She admits to her niece that they've been more absent than they'd like, but there are reasons for that, too. The Least of which was her treat of murder at their last meeting. Regardless, she'd like to apologize. Hope mocks her, wondering if that was her big swing to flip her humanity, but Rebekah questions why she brought it up. She's sure her humanity is flickering and trying to return. She explains to Hope that this is not a nightmare, or a memory, or a head dive. It's astral projection. Vincent is anchoring the spell, so while her body may be intangible, they are truly in New Orleans, and everything is very real. With this information, Hope decides she'll leave, but Rebekah tells her that she'll miss the show. Hope notices the Second Line and notes that she hasn't killed her yet and they're early. This, however, has been long overdue. She explains that it's for her father and his funeral is today.
Hope follows Rebekah into Rousseau's. Despite going for nostalgia, all she's getting is the smell. Rebekah has other plans and uncovers an urn. She questions if that is supposed to be her dad, though believes it to be a staged, sad attempt at a cautionary tale. Rebekah doesn't understand and she explains that Landon had shown her something from Star Wars similar to this once before and it was a means to show what happens if they went down the wrong path. Rebekah reassures her that it's real and these are his ashes. Hope still doesn't believe her because he and Elijah had staked each other off at Jackson Square. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust and they were carried off on the wind. That is true, which explains why it took so long for them to retrieve the ashes. Hope questions if she's supposed to believe that she's been vamping all over town for the past three years collecting his ashes. Though it does sound ridiculous, it has its truth. They've used magic to accomplish this task. Freya appears from behind, remarking that one day they'll meet under happier circumstances.
Ben is sure that their plan will never work. Jen is a god and as docile as she may seem, she will surely crush them. He believes the better plan is to take the key out of him and destroy it. Ben believes they want it to raise his father, but he's wrong. They want to raise the time god, Chronos, as they'd know him as. He questions why they want him and Lizzie explains that they want to go back in time and fix all of the mistakes they've made. Permitting they allow him, he too wants to go back as well, to the time when his lover, Ashur was alive. Lizzie sympathizes with him and attempts to convince Aurora to let him join. Aurora doesn't trust him, though Ben tells them that they're trying to trick a god. He's only ever seen it done once by the very person they're trying to trick. He believes it to be worth the risk, if they can get past Jen. He's sure that manipulating her is the one part of this plan that he's certain he will help them achieve. Aurora mocks Lizzie's trustworthiness, telling her to throw caution to the wind.
Jen works at her metal shop, Torch 'n Toke until she's greeted by Lizzie. Jen questions why she's here. Lizzie explains that she and Aurora had a bit of a falling out and asks if she'd like to join her. She has tickets for a monster truck event and doesn't want to go alone. Jen accepts her offer.
Kaleb takes Cleo to where he grew up to meet his friend, Mavis. May to her friends. He explains that she's the woman who found him when he was in transition. He didn't think his family would accept him as a vampire and he would have never given them the chance if it wasn't for her. She is special to him. Cleo questions how she found him, but all he tells her is that Mavis has a gift. Like the others around here, he used to think she was crazy, but he's less skeptical since becoming a vampire. She wants to know how he turned, but that chapter of his story is not exactly first date material. He tells her that today is about her and she accepts that. Coming to Mavis' door, it flies open before Cleo has the chance to knock. She's already aware of Cleo and has prepared tea and an awful drink mix for Kaleb.
Hope is surprised by the intervention, noting they probably should have had one in the family before now. Rebekah and Freya are trying to be honest and employ her to do the same. Hope mocks her, retorting she now knows why her father daggered her all the time. Likewise, turning to Freya, she wonders if she feels guilty for being the one who killed her. Freya was only trying to respect her wishes and she believed she was strong enough to handle it. Hope tells her that she is strong enough, but Freya reminds her that being feared and being strong are two different things. Hope rhetorically asks if she was scared after she threatened the family, wondering if that's the reason her son is absent. Freya was, and still is, sad for her. Rebekah tells her that the Mikaelsons have done terrible things over the centuries and that they are very much the same. However, where they differ is that they've all come to realize that, no matter how powerful they are, their greatest strength is family. Her father made them see that. That is why Freya named her son after him, and the name he had given to her has meaning, too. Maybe she will understand that if she ever chooses to become a parent. Hope believes she doesn't get that choice, because it was taken from her when she turned; however, Freya and Rebekah believe otherwise, because Klaus was able to father a child with Hayley. It could be possible for her to conceive a child too, and they mean to bring her hope.
Hope is overwhelmed with her aunts and walks out of Rousseau's. On a cement planter, she finds a small toy soldier. Marcel sits with his back to Hope, questioning if she wants it back. She retorts that if the price of that stupid toy is her humanity, then he can keep it. When Hope found it and gave it back to Marcel, he was in a pretty dark place, like she is now. He explains to her that the toy reminded him of a time when he wasn't. It still does. Hope deflects, telling him that he looks silly in a suit. Marcel accepts the compliment, as it was one of Elijah's old suits. Marcel brings back their point system to her attention, though Hope hasn't kept track of her points for a long time. Marcel, however, has been keeping them for her and he wanted to prove just how hard she's been on herself. How much the good outweighs the bad. He asks her to come back inside with him because their family needs to lay Klaus to rest. Hope explains that her father will never be able to rest until he knows that she's okay. Marcel takes that as meaning she knows that she's not okay. Hope would rather skip to the end of the morbid family reunion. Marcel makes her a deal. If she comes back with him, he'll give her ten points. If she earns those ten points, then Vincent will drop the spell that's keeping her here.
Alaric uses the prism to summon a manifestation of his subconscious–his former Hunter. His subconscious believes that bringing him here was pointless. His daughter is a vampire, and, if it were up to him, she'd be dead. However, Alaric reasons that if that were true, then the school wouldn't exist. He believes that if he's going to lead them in a war against the gods, he needs to make sure he's looked at every play on the table. That there isn't some ruthless angle that his Hunter instincts sees, that he doesn't. The Hunter part of him tells him there's nothing he can do and his students will be wiped out, and he'll die. The only thing his subconscious can now relate to him is that he's still a drunk. With his innermost thoughts revealed to him, the manifestation disappears.
Mavis pours Cleo her favorite tea. Cleo would ask her how she knew, but guesses she's a witch, which most of the neighborhood believes. Instead, Mavis knows she's a witch because of her aura. Cleo questions if she's psychic, but denies this. Who she is, is Mavis and sometimes she can see the future, though never on purpose. Since Kaleb is special to her, she'll make an exception, if it will help her. Kaleb encourages Cleo to trust her, and she takes Mavis' outstretched hands. Mavis instructs her to close her eyes, to let her mind wander, and she'll see where it takes them. As Cleo holds on to her hands, the room begins to shake, enough to warrant Kaleb's worry. He tries to get Mavis to let go and for Cleo to open her eyes, to no avail. When Cleo finally does open her eyes, they're bright gold and she collapses on the couch. Kaleb asks what Mavis saw, but tells him that he should ask Cleo when she wakes up.
Jen and Lizzie return from the Monster Truck rally. She had no idea Lizzie was into that kind of destruction. Jen asks if she'd like to get some coffee and an edible, but Lizzie has something else in mind and pulls over at a pasture with horses. Jen loves horses and tells her that she used to have one as a kid before her father smote it. She'd also sneak down the mountaintop and visit the human stables to feed them apples. Lizzie, however, hands her a basket of apples, much to Jen's surprise, though immediately knows that she's being played. She breaks the basket handle off, a wooden stake, and threatens Lizzie. She's only ever told one person that story and knows that Ben must be free from Malivore and asks where he is. From her point of view, it's pretty obvious that Lizzie doesn't really want to be her friend.
Meanwhile, Aurora has removed and dissected one of Ben's kidneys, finding the key they're searching for. With the worst behind him, he asks for her to unchain him, though she doesn't. Ben claims they had a deal, though she points out that his deal was with Lizzie, which she opposed. Ben claims that she won't know which sarcophagus to open without him, but she's taking it one problem at a time. Aurora believes that she should kill him, to make sure that he won't follow her, however she reasons that would hamper her personal journey from villain to savior. She likes Lizzie, but she always wants to be the one who makes the decisions and when that decision involves using the boon of a god for anything, she doesn't know what she'll do. Ben tells her that his father is the only one that can grant a Boon and begs her not to do this, to wake him. Aurora simply tells him that he'll just have to trust her and vamps away. With Aurora gone, Ben dislodges the knife in his abdomen and begins using it behind his back.
Hope returns with Marcel. Rebekah and Freya have prepared a meal, having hoped that she's return. Hope doesn't plan to stay for dinner, believing that Vincent will lift the spell keeping her here. She's just come to say goodbye. Rebekah makes a face, revealing that he's told a story to Hope. As Freya sets an extra plate, Kol arrives just in time. Hope quips that he's late and she's tired of not being surprised. Regardless, he's happy to come to see his favorite niece because they need her help. Kol explains that they're trying to decide where to spread her father's ashes and they're bickering about what to do. The only solution they could agree upon was to leave it up to her. Hope accepts and immediately suggests tossing them in the garbage can, though Marcel deducts ten points. She doesn't care about his game and questions why this decision is up to her. Freya tells her that Kol speaks the truth. They don't know what to do without her. Likewise, Kol tells her that Klaus would have wanted it this way. Hope doesn't but Rebekah questions why she remains. Hope believes it's because Vincent's holding her hostage with the astral projection spell. However, Marcel explains that he's only anchoring the spell to New Orleans and she could have left anytime she wanted. Hope doesn't understand why she can't leave, but Freya tells her that it's because she doesn't really want to, at least not all of her. Rebekah advises that perhaps if she answered their question earnestly, then she'll be able to leave. Sitting down at the table, she takes a moment and gives her answer. Although it's a bit selfish, she knows that her father saw the entire world and New Orleans was his home. Before that was Mystic Falls and he built a school for her. If it was up to her, she'd want him with her so that she could find the perfect spot. That way, he could always be near. In the trees or on the breeze. Looking around to one another, Kol declares this is how it will be. Kol mentions that Davina was gutted when she couldn't come and suggests they could pay a visit, while Freya tells her that it will give them all an excuse to visit her more. They tell her they love her, always and forever. Hope questions if it worked because she's still here, though her humanity appears behind her as she's come to join her.
Aurora returns to Jen's hideout, heading straight for the cargo container of sarcophagi. She doesn't know which one is Ken and rhetorically asks for a sign. Coincidentally, one of Jen's many phones rings out. She takes this as her cue to answer, though it's Lizzie and Jen. Lizzie questions if she told Ben about the boon, and Aurora threatens to hang up. She explains to Lizzie that she knew he was dangerous which was why she cut the key from him and left him chained to the tree. She questions why she's changed her mind. Lizzie tells her that Jen told her his story and how he'd do anything to bring his old lover back as well as that Chronos isn't in any of those sarcophaguses. Ben lied to them. Jen explains that Ben's cursed and the only he can break that curse is with her father, which her father will only break the curse as a boon in exchange for his freedom. Lizzie knows she screwed up but she knows that Aurora is in Jen's metalshop planning to do something stupid, but begs her not to make any sudden moves. They are in the endgame. Aurora agrees to wait until she arrives, however, she's attacked from behind by Ben. He now has the key and all over the sarcophagi.
Hope walks the dark street of New Orleans. Humanity Hope appears before her as Hope tries to regain control. Hope is surprised to see her and how annoying she is. Humanity Hope, however, hasn't come to talk, but to fight. Hope threatens to crush her delicate little feelings, but her Humanity is stronger now. All of those conversations have seemed to have weakened her enough to let her pay a visit. She also knows that Vincent dropped the spell which means they're back in their mind. This means she can finally take back control and punches her into the air.
Jen and Lizzie arrive back at the metalshop, they find a large pool of Aurora's blood, but she's missing. Jen also sees that the sarcophagi have been taken, her trapps completely destroyed.
Humanity Hope questions if Hope is scared yet and wonders if she's right about her being weak. Hope quips back that her weakness is the only reason she exists. If she and her family are so powerful, she asks why she shut off her humanity and kept it off this entire time. Similarly, she asks why her humanity has sat back and watched all the horrible things that she's done because of it. Humanity Hope reasons that once she figures that out, then she can be rid of her for good. However, Hope is feeling plenty of powerful things, such as anger, resentment and rage. Humanity is just the strength to not give in to them and she believes that she is the most emotional person she's met and she knows Lizzie. Regardless she's still a murderer. She had nothing to do with killing Landon. Her Humanity tells her that she is the worst part of her. Though she won't admit it, her Humanity needs her and she's still the one in control. She picks up a piece of wood and stabs her humanity, claiming she's the strong one. Her humanity believes otherwise, and bashes her up against a concrete block. If that were true, then that would have hurt and pulled out the stake. If she was in control of their mind, then this stake would have been red oak. Humanity-less Hope questions why she just won't go away, but Hope tells her it's because she is her father's daughter. Today has reminded her of how much he and her family love and have sacrificed for her. She has to be worth that, and she won't be if she keeps letting her set the world on fire. Her former self was just a phase and she's over it. Hope throws the stake at her humanity-less self, and vamps toward herself, ensuring that she burns and turns to ash. Her humanity has regained control.
Jen tries to comfort Lizzie with leftover burritos. Lizzie doesn't believe she should be making any more decisions. Jen asks if she wants to talk about it. Lizzie's screwed up so many things, even her plans to fix them and how she's hurt so many people she loves. Jen tells her she's good at fixing things, machinery mostly, but offers to help if she can.
Kaleb cleans up Mavis' living room of broken glass as Cleo comes too. She's given him quite a scare. Though she tells him it's nothing compared to the one she's yet to give. Kaleb explains that she has Mavis' gift, although on a whole other level. Cleo has felt so rudderless without her magic, but now she's not certain she wishes to have whatever this is. Kaleb explains that she saw the future and she needs to tell him about it. Doing as he asked, she told him. Their school was in rubble. Mystic Falls in flames. Many innocent people will die if they do not stop the gods from returning to this world, including their friends. Despite how scary all that sounds, Kaleb is determined to have his second date with her, and climbs behind her on the couch, comforting her.
MG finds Alaric in his office, emptying out his liquor cabinet. MG assumes that whoever stopped by made an impact. Alaric has also shaved and tells him that he hopes to never see him again and asks how things went with the squad. MG tells him that no one's leaving. They trust them to lead them into battle, if it comes to that. While Alaric might trust himself to lead them, he's never stopped trusting him. MG doesn't believe the sentiment because he doesn't know if he can fight against Lizzie if she stays on the wrong side.
A knock rings out on the door and MG and Alaric turn to find Lizzie and introduce Jen to them. Jen has convinced her to come home and talk, though immediately believes it was a mistake and wants to leave. Alaric tells her no and has MG help him to her and the two of them embrace her in a hug. Lizzie believes she's done something really bad.
Meanwhile, Ben has loaded up Aurora and the sarcophagi into a semi truck and stopped alongside a road. Getting out with Aurora unconscious, he opens the back and unlocks one of the sarcophagi. Opening it, he's enveloped in a bright, white light.
Hope awakens from the astral projection spell and stands in her cell, her humanity back in control. However, behind the doors of the cell, she sees her humanity-less self who questions if she really thought she got rid of her. Hope tells her that she shouldn't be so cocky because she's in control. Humanity-less Hope warns her that the war between them isn't over.
