You were wrong about me. I loathe Dahlia more than you could ever know. You don't see that light in me? That's because she snuffed it out! I was five, and she was the devil. She took my light. My love. My will to live. My ability to die. You are no longer my mother, but I am not her child.
Freya to Esther

Exquisite Corpse is the seventeenth episode of the second season of The Originals and the thirty-ninth episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

CONTROLLING THE DEMON — When Eva Sinclair's reemergence leaves Rebekah trapped and helpless, Klaus is forced to put aside his mistrust for Freya in order to save Rebekah's life. Meanwhile, Hayley and Elijah learn more about Eva's violent past from Josephine, who then makes a startling revelation about Hayley's future. With time running out to save Rebekah, Marcel turns to a reluctant Vincent for his help to take down Eva, but his plan takes an unexpected turn, as Eva will not go down without a fight. Davina also appears.

Plot[]

In her mind, Eva is chasing Young Rebekah and captures her. She wakes up, and attacks Marcel with her magic. Hearing Hope, Eva smiles and plans to use her as another power source. Hayley and Rebekah stop her, and Eva runs off. Hope is safe.

Klaus unpacks the anti-magic shackles, and tells Marcel not to hurt Eva's body. But, the twenty-four hour period is up; Ms. LaRue and the witches are looking for Eva too, and they want her gone for good.

It's a moment of awkwardness between Elijah, Hayley, and Gia, waiting on Josephine LaRue in her home. Gia goes to look for her, and she and Elijah share a look. Hayley says she now sees why Elijah won't answer her calls, and asks if she had to come with them. Elijah replies that Ms. LaRue can be willful and uncooperative, but has taken a liking to Gia for her musical prowess and cavalier spirit. Ms. LaRue arrives, and they ask for a favor.

Klaus wants Freya to get Rebekah back in her true body, but Freya can't because her condition has worsened. When she offered to help in the previous episode, Rebekah was still in control. Freya doesn't have a spell that can reach Eva's mind and find her. Klaus chains her up, and takes her to someone who does know of a spell.

Marcel asks Vincent for help. Vincent tells Marcel that he didn't know what Eva was up to, until he put a locator spell on a boy before he was snatched away. Then he saw the love of his life, and he turned her in. Eva was kidnapping enough witches to complete the Rite of Nines—she thought that if she sacrificed a witch from each of the nine covens, it would create a new witch order in New Orleans. Eva would be more powerful than any elder and any Harvest girl.

Ms. LaRue says that if Eva is back in control of her body, they have to let the witches put her down. Eva will use up Rebekah, just like she has done to the other young witches.

Klaus brings Freya to Esther. He compels Esther to tell the truth and give the spell. Klaus also reveals Hope is alive.

Eva is in a secret place tending to her wound, but Marcel comes and puts the shackles on her. She reveals Davina is one of the witches she took, and mocks Marcel for not noticing Davina was missing. Vincent convinces Marcel to let him talk to Eva.

Vincent helps Eva by taking out Marcel. He and Eva kidnap Josephine as the ninth witch. But once they get to the warehouse, Eva reveals that even though she didn't kill the witches, a few sacrifices will have to be made now. Vincent knocks her out, and tells Marcel.

Freya says she can't do Esther's spell, because it requires an enormous amount of power. She has the power, but it needs to be anchored, otherwise she'll be lost inside Eva's mind along with Rebekah. Unlike Esther, Freya's magic isn't anchored because she has no home, no thanks to Esther. Freya figures she can channel Klaus and breach Eva's mind, but Esther accuses Freya of wanting to access Klaus' mind. Klaus' distrust of Freya returns, but Elijah comes and says she can channel him instead of Klaus. Freya breaks free of her shackles, snaps Klaus' neck, and takes Elijah with her to perform the spell.

Elijah anchors Freya, while Vincent and Marcel are in Eva's mind. Marcel frees Young Rebekah, and Eva nearly kills Vincent. Klaus awakens, and leaves to help anchor Freya. Young Rebekah stabs Eva. Marcel and Vincent awake, and Rebekah shortly afterward.

Back at the compound, Rebekah tells Klaus that she can't leave Eva's body yet because it's still linked to Davina and the other witches. If Eva's body dies, Davina will die. And she promised to bring Kol back.

Freya is welcomed by Josephine LaRue. She's now one of them.

Klaus still doesn't trust Freya, and tells her he won't be blinded by her.

Freya comes back to Esther and makes it clear she loathes Dahlia. The light she used to have as a child was snuffed out by Dahlia. But Esther has told one truth—she's going to turn Elijah and Rebekah against Klaus. And she's telling Esther this, because she won't be around to see it. Then, Freya uses her magic to kill Esther.

Trivia[]

  • Antagonists: Eva Sinclair and Freya Mikaelson.
  • Narrators: Eva Sinclair and Rebekah Mikaelson.
  • Elijah, Marcel and Vincent team up against Eva Sinclair with help from Freya and her magic.
  • Freya reveals to Klaus that saving Rebekah's life is not as simple as previously thought now that Eva has retaken control of her body.
  • Eva Sinclair tried to kidnap Hope to be the ninth and final witch for her to channel and sacrifice so she could finally complete the Rite of Nines.
  • Eva Sinclair takes full control over her body from Rebekah, who possessed her in The Map of Moments.
    • Rebekah then returns to Eva Sinclair's body at the end of the episode, despite Freya's offer to put her back into her own body, for two reasons: first, she could feel that Eva Sinclair's body is still linked to the eight young witches, including Davina, who Eva had channeled to perform the Rite of Nines, and she knew that since her spirit was the only thing keeping Eva Sinclair's body alive, she didn't want to kill Davina and the others by leaving it; secondly, she wanted to fulfill her promise to Kol to resurrect him, and knows she can't do that without being in a witch body.
  • Esther learns that Hope is still alive and that Dahlia is on her way to claim her.
  • Josephine LaRue warns Hayley that there is a storm coming and her darkest demons are upon it. She admits that she does not know its name, but when she appears in her future, there is a blackness that should terrify her, implying that something (likely Dahlia) is going to happen that she should be wary of.
  • Freya meets Esther for the first time since she was given away when Klaus brings her to Esther's tomb to obtain a spell to free Rebekah from inside Eva's mind.
    • Freya ultimately kills Esther after she is accepted by the New Orleans witches, both to get revenge on Esther for having given her away to Dahlia when she was a child, as well as to ensure that Esther would not inform her siblings that she was planning to turn the family against Klaus one by one to make certain that he would not ruin her plans to take down Dahlia as a result of his distrust toward her.

Cultural References[]

An "Exquisite Corpse" refers to a form of poetry written in a group setting. It begins with each person in the group writing the first line in a poem, before handing off his or her paper to the person next to him- or her. This process continues until each person is passed what was his or her original paper. The resulting poems written as a part of this activity are each known as an "Exquisite Corpse," with each part being a combination of the reflections of the individuals who wrote each particular line in the poem. Thus, each line of each of the resulting poems is linked to the creation of a corpse using different body parts.

Freya: "Our sister was quite the beauty."
Klaus: "You said that you could put Rebekah back in her original body. Do it."
Freya: "So you've come to your senses."
Klaus: "My senses have not faulted, they still demand that you're not to be trusted. However, circumstance dictates otherwise. For now."
Freya: "What's changed?"
Klaus: "Eva Sinclair has resumed control of her body, leaving Rebekah trapped and powerless. So make with your spells and enchantments, and put my sister back in her true body."
Freya: "I'm afraid it's not that simple."
Klaus: "More stalling. Very well. I know I can't kill you, but I shall have a fine time trying. Tell me, have you ever been skinned alive?"

Klaus (to Eva): "Rebekah! What are you doing!?"
Klaus (to Marcel): "Find Rebekah or Eva or whoever the bloody hell that was. Use these to stop her from doing magic and don't hurt her. The non-psychopathic bits are still my sister."
Marcel (to Vincent): "You need to know that she is back and one the loose. Now, I need to find her before the witches do so I can save my friend who is trapped inside of her. And I came to you because you are the only person in the city who knows her inside out. So help me find her before she takes anymore lives, in including Rebekah's. Help me stop her!"
