I was so horrified by what I had done that I just really wanted to make sure that it never happened again. But in a way, that was kind of like letting the dark part of me win. It's a battle that's always going to be with me, and I don't want to run from that anymore. This is who I am.

You Can't Run From Who You Are[2] is the eleventh episode of the third season of Legacies and the forty-third episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

INSPIRATION — After receiving some inspiration from Cleo, Hope and Landon set out on a new mission. However, when that plan takes an unexpected turn, Josie and Wade step in to lend a hand. Elsewhere, Lizzie enlists MG's help learning more about Finch. Alaric, Kaleb, Jed and Ethan also appear.[3]

Plot[]

LGC311-002-Triad Industries

Experiment 405-E to open the artifact.

A classified archived video tape shows a flashback to numerous scientific experiments by Triad Industries led by Ryan Clarke to destroy, or open, the mysterious magical artefact currently in the possession of the Salvatore School. These attempts are futile, however, and Clarke remarks that they will move on to using highly corrosive acid to try and open the artefact.

Meanwhile, Alaric, Hope, Landon, Jed and Kaleb attempt to activate Cleo's abilities after the revelation that she is a muse. They try numerous methods, including meditation but all fail to inspire Cleo. Alaric finally suggests that perhaps Cleo inspiring herself will inspire the others, which works, giving both Alaric and Hope ideas about dealing with Malivore. Whilst Hope tells the others that she will keep her plan a secret for now, Alaric suggests that they head to Triad Industries headquarters in an effort to source details about the artefact in Triad's notes. Cleo and Kaleb elect to accompany Alaric should anything go wrong.

In her room, Hope gathers up the things to execute her idea. She explains to Landon that they will pose a deal with someone inside of Malivore to release them in exchange for something they need. When Landon objects, citing that it is dangerous, Hope remarks that they will not actually free them, but double-cross them. Landon opts to come along for the journey, despite the danger it poses.

Out by the shed on the Salvatore grounds, Ethan and MG discuss what they should do with Finch. MG remarks that he can't tell Alaric, as this would reveal the fact that he never compelled Ethan to forget about the supernatural. Ethan tells MG that he has to run and will be back later, and after he has left, Lizzie reveals herself, much to MG's surprise, she has been there for the entire conversation. Lizzie and MG talk, and Lizzie tells MG that she isn't here to bust him, but to protect Josie. She explains that Finch most likely killed someone to trigger her curse, but Finch denies this when overhearing the conversation. When Finch questions how Lizzie knows about the requirements to trigger the werewolf gene, Lizzie is forced to reveal herself as a witch.

LGC311-049-Berbalang

The creature devours the Necromancer's remains.

In the Prison World, Hope and Landon practice what they will say to the Necromancer in an effort to persuade him to cut all ties with the Prison World, therefore causing the plane to self destruct. Landon tells Hope to be sure of herself and if the Necromancer doesn't cooperate, they will return to reality and find another way. Inside the Salvatore Crypt, Landon and Hope find numerous books and scribes over the walls — clear attempts at escape from the Necromancer. It seems that the Necromancer didn't succeed, however, and has been torn to pieces on the floor of the crypt. Momentarily, however, a new monster presents itself and begins to eat the Necromancer's remains. Landon queries Hope on their astral status, but Hope remarks that they cannot be seen nor hurt in this form. This turns out to be false, however, when they are attacked by the creature and Hope is injured. In the essence of safety, Hope sends Landon back to reality.

With the prism she borrowed from Wade, Josie tries to contact her subconscious in order to figure out her relationship troubles. Josie is surprised, however, when she finds that the manifestation presented is that of Dark Josie. Shocked, Josie asks why she can never be happy, and Dark Josie tells her that she can never lead a happy human life, but can lead a happy magical life, just as she was always supposed to.

LGC311-055-Kaleb-Alaric-Cleo

Alaric, Kaleb and Cleo at Triad Industries

Arriving at Triad Industries, Alaric, Kaleb and Cleo look around, but believe the site to have been ransacked. Alaric points out the mummy statue in the far corner of the room, citing that if it had been, they would've taken it. Alaric figures out that the mummy is an entrance to a hidden room and when the door is open, they find a storage room full of files on every magical artefact ever to be in Triad's possession.

LGC311-086~Young Finch-Grandpa Tarrayo-Memory

Finch talks with her grandfather.

Hoping to find out more about Finch's past, Lizzie and MG suggest a head dive. Despite her initial reluctance, Finch agrees to the head dive. MG tells Finch to think about the first time she remembers turning, and this brings them into a memory of her as a child, visiting her grandfather in hospital. As the memory continues, Finch comforts her grandfather as he tells her how special their family is. He remarks how some see them as cursed, but he sees them as gifted. With this, he asks her to hand her some pills from his jacket, and tells her to chain herself up later that night. It is therefore revealed that Finch's assist in her father's euthanasia triggered her curse. As the memory ends, Finch is both heartbroken but furious that Lizzie and MG have reminded her of the part she played in her grandfathers death.

LGC311-098-Berbalang Hope

Hope during her transition to a berbalang.

Believing Hope to be in imminent danger, Landon turns to Josie for help. With all of their magical friends busy, Josie and Landon turn to Wade for help identifying the monster. Wade tells them that their monster is a "berbalang", a mythical creature from the Dungeons and Dragons board game. He explains that the scratch will turn Hope into a berbalang if she is not rescued within a matter of time, but it is too late, and the trio watch as a half-berbalang Hope appears behind them. Despite their efforts to reason with Hope, they find themselves faced with an imminent threat should they not act accordingly.

Meanwhile, Cleo and Kaleb look through the files at Triad Industries. Kaleb's continued efforts at flirting with Cleo do not go unnoticed, and after he asks her to have drinks with him, she refuses. Cleo remarks that it isn't that she doesn't like him, his methods are just outdated.

Josie asks her subconscious for help in reading Sanskrit, an ancient language which she has forgotten. Dark Josie helps her translate, but tells her that she is useless in her efforts to combat the monster as she has no magic. Whilst Josie believes this to be a ploy by Dark Josie to trick her into taking back her magic, Dark Josie tells her that she will always be a part of her no matter what.

LGC311-115-Berbalang Hope

Landon is somewhat successful in his attempts to break through to Hope, but these efforts are eventually futile. Josie arrives moments later and takes back her magic from the coin. She hands over the dagger which she has enchanted and should be able to kill the berbalang. The trio are hesitant, however, given they could kill Hope should the lore be incorrect. Landon snatches the blade and stabs Hope in the heart, revealing that their planned worked.

At Triad Industries, Alaric shows Kaleb a drawing of the artifact, citing that it was signed by Leonardo DaVinci, therefore has been around for hundreds of years. Just before they are able to investigate more, the paper is destroyed by the fire system in the building.

MG and Lizzie talk, and MG tells Lizzie that she is not a monster, and everything she did during the day was to protect Josie. When MG asks about his situation with Ethan, Lizzie tells him that she will not tell her father about him. Later, MG returns to Ethan, telling him that they should tell Alaric about their situation, but he finds it all too late, give Ethan tried to be a superhero and got badly beaten.

Trivia[]

  • Antagonists: Malivore (indirectly), Cleo Sowande (indirectly), Berbalang, and Berbalang Hope.
  • Benjamin Raab's daughter drew the sigil design for the astral projection spell to the prison world.[4]
  • Dante Ha appears as the Berbalang[5]
  • The Necromancer being freed from Malivore is poorly explained and, in some context, seems to be a continuity error. In To Whom It May Concern, the Necromancer claims the door Landon uses to escape Malivore is single-use, therefore the Necromancer shouldn't have been able to use it too. However, in You Have to Pick One This Time, Malivore reveals he purposely released the Necromancer so he could trick Landon out of the Darkness. Despite being freed from Malivore, he was still trapped within the prison world. During Hope and Landon's astral projected visit to the prison world, they found his dismembered corpse. During their short time there, Hope claims that the Necromancer never revived with no current explanation. It is believed he freed himself and reverse engineered the banishment spell as on the walls of the Salvatore Crypt were various spells from numerous witches, including the Bennett family. This would explain not resurrecting, which would likely mean that the dismembered corpse was from before he escaped. This, however, does not explain the memory loss as he experienced before when Malivore sent him to Texas.
