Drink deep, but beware. What you broke is past repair. All your oaths you betray. Your sacred vows you sever. And now, you see that nothing lasts for always and forever. Three yet remain, two already crossed. Yet in one year's time, you'll all be lost. As your family is undone, you will seed the beast that is yet to come.
Alexis' prophecy on the Mikaelsons

For the Next Millennium is the first episode of the third season of The Originals and the forty-fifth episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

A WAR BREWING BETWEEN THE SIRE LINES — In the months following their violent and deadly showdown with the powerful witch Dahlia, a rift continues to divide brothers Klaus and Elijah, while Freya searches for a way to heal their fractured bond and return their family to the way they once were. Meanwhile, Klaus' suspicion piques when he learns that an old vampire friend named Lucien has arrived to New Orleans with a mysterious agenda involving the Mikaelsons' remaining sire lines. Elsewhere, Elijah questions whether he can truly forgive his brother for his mounting offenses, while Hayley struggles with being cursed to her wolf form in the bayou. In the French Quarter, Vincent and Cami assist Detective Kinney after a series of gruesome discoveries are made, leading them to believe they may have a serial killer on the loose. Finally, Marcel, who has regained control of the French Quarter once again, tries a new strategy to recruit vampires, while Davina, who is now Regent to the New Orleans witches, makes a decision that will find her and Marcel on opposite sides of an escalating conflict.

Plot[]

In a flashback to Southern France, 1002 A.D., the Mikaelson siblings have not yet learned compulsion. They are on the run from their father Mikael, and while stopping to feed on a passing traveler, they argue about what to do next. Kol suggests they split up, because Mikael won't be able to chase after all five of them at once. Finn agrees, but Elijah says they've made a vow. "Always and forever."

In the present, Freya writes Rebekah a letter, telling her that the rift between Elijah and Klaus persists, Marcel has turned St. Anne's Church into a fight gym, and Davina continues to turn down Marcel's pleas for help.

Vincent brings Camille to the streets to meet with Will Kinney, a detective, who shows her a murdered man in an alley with a Glasgow Smile. Camille examines the body, telling Vincent there are no marks on his wrists and no sign of a struggle. Vincent concludes he was compelled to just stand there while the murderer tortured him. They suspect a vampire killed him.

Back in 1002 A.D., Rebekah complains about the waste of a pretty dress on one of the five nobles whom they massacred and fed on. She suggests that they dress into their victims' luxurious clothes and head off to the castle nearby, pretending to be nobles and living an actual life for a time. Elijah hears a heartbeat, and a young man named Lucien begs them not to kill him as he could be useful. He's a personal servant to Count de Martel, of the estate with the castle nearby. They vote, and Klaus has to decide Lucien's fate.

In present day, Lucien overlooks New Orleans in a fancy apartment and kills the woman showing him around.

Davina tells the witches they can't expand into Gentilly, to avoid a turf war with the vampires. One of the witches, Kara, walks away, chanting a spell to hurt Davina's hand and releases a circle of fire around Davina, which Davina puts out.

A few men with big guns arrive at the bayou, telling Elijah that the area is now property of Kingmaker Land Development to be turned into a golf course and condos. Elijah knows they're not on the Board of Directors, and the man says they're animal control, paid top dollar to wipe out the influx of wild predators. Wolves. They killed several wolves the other night. Elijah turns Hope's stroller the other way, and fights them off. But since the men are independent contractors and can't stop other men from coming into the bayou and killing them, Elijah snaps his neck.

In the past, the Mikaelson siblings meet Count de Martel. They pose as Comte du Guise's children, with an explanation as to why the Count's friend never mentioned them. Klaus notes that Lucien isn't disturbed at bringing them into the Count's home, and he tells Klaus that the Count is a cruel drunkard who torments his minions for sport and vassals who can't pay debts, like his father. Lucien doesn't care if the wealthy people are killed by Klaus and his siblings. Klaus sees Aurora and is mesmerized, but Lucien tells him that her brother Tristan is wicked.

In the present day, Lucien meets Klaus at his art show. The art critic is rather indifferent to Klaus' work. He and Lucien share a drink, and Klaus asks about "her." Lucien says he and Aurora parted ways centuries earlier. Camille shows up, telling him that a local was tortured and killed and left in the open. But Klaus only directs her to check with Marcel or Elijah.

At Rousseu's, Freya is getting drunk and dancing on the counter, when she gets a call from Elijah. He needs her to watch over Hope while he has business to attend elsewhere.

Klaus asks Lucien what he's really doing in New Orleans, and Lucien reveals that he and other vampires know Klaus has been attacked. They now know about the sireline, Kol's death confirming that their lives are linked to the Original who started that line. With Finn also gone, that's two whole lines wiped out. The threat of the vampires being wiped out, should the three remaining Mikaelsons be killed, doesn't sit well with them. Since territory is limited, there's a growing conflict between each of the three sirelines, to wipe out the other sireline by killing one of the Originals.

Davina shows up at the gym in St. Anne's Church. She doesn't want to prove the witches right by siding with the vampires, but they're still turning away from her. Marcel tells her she has to use a show of force, whether she has Marcel's help or not.

Freya watches over Hope. Elijah finds the wolf traps, and other hunters show up. He kills them, and then finds a truck with a load of dead wolves.

Lucien brings Klaus to an expert cipher. They feed on her while she shows him her visions.

Camille gets a call from the detective. Another local has been attacked, just like the man before him.

Hayley is in the cemetery with Davina. She wants to see Hope, but Davina needs her services first.

Klaus, worried, needs to speak with Camille, but she doesn't have the time. Hurting his feelings, he stops the art critic in an alley, and feeds on him.

Lucien has Kingmaker Land Development papers in his room, and puts a Glasgow Smile on his own face.

Aurora is at Buddhist monastery, and receives a letter. Upset at what she reads, Aurora kills the monk.

Elijah: "That won't be necessary. You deserve a night off."
Klaus: (to Elijah) "I'd offer to accompany you myself, but I fear my fragile ego could not endure the litany of insults Hayley has no doubt prepared."
Elijah: "Yes, I doubt that your presence is particularly welcome anywhere."
Klaus: "My own brother greeting me with such disdain." (He turns to Freya) "What do you think Freya? Is he still angry for my part in Hayley's curse? Need I remind him it was my ploy that kept her alive."
Elijah: (sarcastically) "Of course. Forgive me. So you would call this an act of heroism even as you bask in her torment."
Klaus: "Or perhaps I'd be more sympathetic if Hayley apologized. After all, it was her that tried to run off with my daughter."
Freya: "Oh, if you two must poke at one another; May I suggest doing it elsewhere?" (She turns to Klaus) "Nicely done. At this rate, you'll drive the entire family away."
