I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime is the twenty-first episode of the sixth season of The Vampire Diaries and the one hundred and thirty-second episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
ALARIC AND JO'S BIG DAY — It's Alaric and Jo's wedding day and Elena and Bonnie do their best to help a stressed out Jo with the last minute preparations. After uncovering some life-changing news that Damon has been keeping from him, Stefan takes his brother on a road trip to give him some perspective on his future with Elena. Elsewhere, when Caroline returns to Mystic Falls after dealing with the fallout of her humanity-free rampage, she begins making amends with her friends and comes to a realization about her and Stefan's prospects of being together. Finally, when Bonnie begins having vivid nightmares that Lily is coming after her, she enlists Matt's help in taking Lily down. Tyler and Enzo also appear.
Plot[]
While asleep in her bed in her dorm, Bonnie has a nightmare that both Lily and Kai are after her. She wanders around and finds that Kai had escaped the Prison World. She tries to force him out of the way but nothing happens. Kai laughs and says that while she was sleeping, he absorbed her magic. She then wakes up.
It's Jo's wedding day and Jo is looking for things to freak out about. She and Elena get a call that her wedding planner is out with the flu. Jo starts to panic when Caroline walks in and offers to take control and organize the entire thing. While this was going on, Caroline is working her way through apologizing to everyone, saving Stefan for last. Stefan is busy with Damon, who said he'd take the cure with Elena, but hasn't.
Meanwhile, Stefan drives Damon to a house in the suburbs, one of the ones he lived in during one of his many attempts to turn human. He doesn't think Damon has thought things through, like neighbors and a mortgage.
At the Salvatore house, Enzo stops by with an ipod of old songs for Lily. When Bonnie goes to check on her, Lily is wild eyed and talking to herself. She strangles Bonnie through the bars and Bonnie manages to escape. As Elena covers up the bruises later, she explains that it's part of the crazies that come with desiccation. Bonnie is worried Lily won't give up on the idea of getting her family back, even without the ascendant. What if there's a loophole?
Caroline ropes Tyler into helping with the floral arrangements as a way to make him listen to her apology for trying to kill him. She's forgiven and Tyler is soon distracted when his ex, Jo's sister Liv shows up. She's still angry at him for dumping her after she tried to kill herself. Picking up more flowers, Bonnie tells Matt about her Lily and Kai nightmares. He shows her his bag of vampire-killing tools and suggests they deal with Lily themselves.
Back in suburbia, Stefan is trying to give Damon a taste of what it'd be like to be human, complete with nuked TV dinner and stacks of paperwork. Damon will also have to figure out a way to make money. He won't be able to get any from Stefan because if Stefan knows where Damon is, anyone could torture him for information on Damon. Stefan explains that sooner or later word will get out that he's human and all the people who've wronged him will come after him. But Damon has a plan. They'll live above a bar that Damon owns in the Northwest. Stefan calls Elena to check in. She's on her fourth champagne. Stefan explains that, despite Elena's fears, Damon has thought through his life with her. Elena urges Stefan to push Damon and make him see that he wouldn't be happy.
When Jo finds her, Elena worries she made a mistake by taking the cure. Jo goes to make her coffee but gets wobbly on her feet. She keels over, whacking her head on a nearby desk on the way down. Elena rushes over to the knocked out body and helplessly calls an ambulance. At the hospital, Jo and the babies check out fine and the doctors presume she had a panic attack brought on by stress and not enough food. Jo makes Elena promise not to tell Alaric about it. So Elena rushes outside to head Alaric off before he can go in. Elena is frustrated that she couldn't vamp to Jo to help her, or feed her her blood after Jo got hurt. But then she called 911 and found the whole thing empowering. She feels connected to the world again.
At the venue, Caroline tries to urge Tyler to work things out with Liv but he brushes her off. Caroline dodges a call from Stefan.
Back in suburbia, Stefan pulls out the big guns, asking Damon what happens if he and Elena break up. He reminds Damon that four years ago, he and Elena were soul mates, too. Stefan gives Damon a glimpse of their future two years in, when Elena comes home late from work with no time for Damon. Then seven years in, when Damon comes drunk from the bar and blames her for not being able to do the things he did as a vampire, saying that becoming human was a mistake. Damon snaps out of the vision and accuses Stefan of trying to change his mind because Stefan doesn't want to lose Damon and Elena. Finally, Stefan points out that Elena is human and could die at any time. He gives Damon a look at his booze-filled, sad and lonely life without Elena. Stefan confesses that this look at his human life was Elena's idea. When Damon asks what he should do, Stefan says Damon has to want to be human for himself.
The cocktail reception before the wedding is underway and Stefan shows up. Caroline runs off. When Elena asks Stefan what he thinks Damon should do, Stefan tells her how aimless Damon was as a human and how much Damon truly loves being a vampire. With less than an hour before the wedding, Matt and Bonnie head down to the cellar to deal with Lily. Once inside, they both drop to the ground, feeling like their throats are closing up.
At the Grill, Enzo is surprised when Lily joins him. She's happy again and announces she's getting her family back.
Before the ceremony, Jo's dad comes to see her. Despite having tried to kill her in the merge with Kai, he wants to walk her down the aisle. Outside, Stefan finally finds Caroline and gets her to talk. He's worried about losing Damon, but isn't mad at her. Caroline recaps for Stefan how poorly she's handled her feelings for him. "That's because you're a control freak who hates not being in control, but that's what falling for someone is, giving up control," she says. She tells him that with everything she's going through and her grief, her control is all she has and she's not ready to give it up. Damon finds Elena in the chapel and explains to her that he will take the cure and become human for her. After Stefan left suburbia, Damon saw an older couple getting out of their car, still flirting and in love and he made up his mind. Later, with the ceremony overdue to start, Matt and Bonnie are nowhere to be found and Elena and Damon are MIA. They finish their literal roll in the hay in the barn and realize how late they are to the ceremony.
Back at the cellar, Matt regains his senses. Bonnie is bleeding on the floor. She says: "It was..." The ceremony begins. Jo's dad walks her down the aisle. Jo and Alaric wrote their own vows. Lily leads Enzo to a shipyard, and starts to tell him who gave her directions to head there. Back at the altar, Damon and Elena picture themselves as Alaric recites his vows to Jo, talking about the many ways they've dodged fate in their lives. Jo begins hers but suddenly starts gasping. Stab wounds appear in her abdomen, then Kai appears. He cripples everyone in the barn with his magic then blows out the window, sending Elena crashing to the floor.
