Maya Machado^[1] is a human who first appeared on the second episode of the second season of Legacies.

Season Two[]

In This Year Will Be Different, Maya walks in the bathroom and finds Hope crying. She asks if she's having boy problems and Hope responds with yes, saying that he's being kind of a "troll". She offers to fix her up, to make him feel jealous, and introduces herself as Maya. Hope responds in kind and thanks her for her generosity. Hope also asks her if she's noticed a terrible smell coming from somewhere inside the school. Maya believes that everyone has.

Later, Maya stumbles across Hope and Alaric and the creature Hope has seemingly killed; she's shocked at the non-human creature, though curious as to what it is. To keep the supernatural world hidden, Alaric has her compelled by MG to forget she ever saw anything and heads back to class.

In You Remind Me of Someone I Used to Know, Maya arrives at school with her brother, Ethan and their mom, the sheriff, who immediately mistakes Hope Mikaelson for vandalizing the school's exterior. Maya defends Hope, telling her mother that she's a Timberwolf, not a Stallion.

As the day progresses, Maya participates in the annual charity football game between the two schools. After Hope seemingly twists her ankle, she encourages Ethan to step in as quarterback. Ethan does and he helps the team score but watches in horror as Ethan's arm is injured mid-pass. Ethan is transported off the field and taken to Mystic Falls Hospital. That night, as she leaves the hospital, she runs into Hope, who came to check on them both. Maya tells Hope that Ethan worked so hard for that scholarship and now it's over, implying the gravity of his injuries.

In Since When Do You Speak Japanese?, she performs as a cheerleader during a pep rally at the high school.

Season Four[]

In Follow the Sound of My Voice, Maya finds Alaric Saltzman and Kaleb at her home in Savannah. Dr. Saltzman introduces his friend, indicating that they're here at her mother's request, to deal with their paranormal problem. Maya explains that they didn't believe it at first, strange things continued to happen. It's like there's an invisible spirit living in their house.

Maya watches them closely as MG, magically disguised as Alaric, and Kaleb set up a séance. Maya wants to wait for her mother, considering she and Dr. Saltzman previously dated, but "Alaric" opts to proceed without her. They call out to the spirit, who is actually her brother, Ethan, and tells him that he should go back to where he belongs. Ethan shakes their hand, letting them know he's there. Kaleb pretends to get something and tells Ethan things are okay with Ben and Jed. They're telling him that the curse affecting them has been lifted. Maya has had enough with the charades and holds them at taser gun point. Her gut's feeling is telling her that they are not who they're pretending to be. Ethan, still invisible, grabs the taser from Maya's hands and Kaleb vamps to her. He compels her that it was all a dream and for her to go to sleep.

Later, Ethan tells her the truth and that he's now supernatural. Once their talk is finished, she and Ethan rejoin MG, no longer as Alaric and Kaleb. Overall she's cool with his power, as he's her brother. However, if she hears one more supernatural explanation, her head might explode. She wants them to take care of Ethan as they make their leave to head back to the school. Before they leave, she tells them if they see Finch to tell her "hi" for her.

In This Can Only End in Blood, Maya tries to distract Ethan as he watches a weatherman speak of a massive electrical storm developing out of nowhere over Mystic Falls. Shutting off the TV off, she asks if he wants to go to the park. They can throw a football around and she'll let him teach her how to throw a spiral. Unable to eat his breakfast, he confesses that there's no way that this is just a storm. He knows the gods are coming. Maya tells him that whatever it is, it's no longer his problem. Ethan fights her on that point. If his friends are in trouble, he can't just sit here and do nothing. She knows his feelings, but knows that if he uses his powers again, it could kill him and he can't help them if he's dead.

She is described as "a sharp-tongued and flirtatious new student at Mystic Falls High", the sister of Ethan and the daughter of Sheriff Machado.^[2]
