Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost is the twelfth episode of the fourth season of Legacies and the sixtieth episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
REVEALATIONS – As Aurora continues her research, she finds information that could prove very useful. Hope commands Lizzie to do things, with surprising results ensuing. Alaric, Landon and Ted work together to devise how to best use their wishes.[2]
Plot[]
Aurora sits at a diner, poring over books about the gods. A waitress tries to take her order, though Aurora is too busy. The waitress promptly threatens to kick her out, but Aurora flashes her true face to the women, threatening in kind to bite her. Lizzie intervenes, saving the woman's life. Lizzie takes a seat across from Aurora, who wonders how she found her. Lizzie explains that the coffin she had been stuffed in, also had her hair too, though takes the moment to show Aurora her new hybrid nature, having transitioned into a vampire since their last meeting. Aurora isn't threatened by her appearance as she's just a distraction. Hope is already behind her and breaks her neck with a spell.
In Limbo, Alaric and the Necromancer drink and dance with other lost souls in the jinni's bar while Landon sits alone at a table. Alaric wants to toast to themselves for getting themselves out of Limbo, though Landon is less optimistic. Relating to a D&D campaign he played called Falcon's Landing, jinnis, depending on the mythology, are difficult to work with. The jinni appears before the three of them, introducing himself as Zied. He has a contract for the three of them to sign to get their three wishes, one wish for each of them. Zied explains that granting three wishes is a bit of a myth and that the number is entirely up to the discretion of the jinni. Three wishes between the three of them, he believes should be plenty, that is if they use them right. Landon already knows that Zied doesn't want them to use the wishes right and the one from his campaign was a total con man and the three wishes likely come at a heavier cost. The Necromancer reminds him that they don't have any coins, but that's not what Zied is after. After reading the contract, Alaric learns he wants their souls. Three wishes for three souls.
In a motel room, Hope and Lizzie imprison Aurora in enchanted chains. Lizzie thought she wanted to kill Aurora, and not whatever she's doing now, but Hope wants to know her plan and why she's after the gods. Lizzie quips that it doesn't matter. If Aurora is dead, then she can't find them. Hope is too concerned with the possibility of someone else finding them and all she wants is to be left alone. Aurora, having recovered and been eavesdropping, begs the question of why she's working with Lizzie. Lizzie asks about her notes, though Aurora refuses to elaborate on their meaning. Hope asks how Lizzie would proceed with their hostile witness. Lizzie wants to do a head dive to expand her vampire training, but Hope refuses. She has something else in mind.
The Necromancer doesn't agree to the terms and conditions of their three wishes. He knew from the start the sphinx would screw them over. Landon questions if the contract says anything about why Zied wants their souls, but all it says is that the contract is "perpetually binding" once they all sign it. The Necromancer refuses, believing that being trapped in Limbo forever is the only thing they can accomplish by themselves. Landon, however, believes they should take the deal despite his earlier comments on Falcon's Landing. The wishes his party campaign made had consequences they hadn't anticipated and before they knew it, they were at each other's throats. Where they went wrong was the thought put into the wording of their wishes. Landon believes that if they had been simple, clear, and concise, they might have made it out of the Landing alive. The jinni used their greed and carelessness against them. The Necromancer isn't so sure. He can recoup coins, but his very soul, as questionable as that is, is not something he's willing to risk. Landon offers a counter offer; they will use their wishes first and should they fail, then he can go last to wish himself to Peace. Zied agrees to the new terms and accepts the signed contract. The Necromancer immediately distrusts Zied for his willingness, believing that he's in league with the sphinx. Alaric, however, believes that he means if souls can just wish themselves back to Peace, then he wonders why this place is so packed. Zied explains that they all want to go back and that is what keeps them trapped here in Limbo. Not the coins, but, perhaps, the fear of the unknown. When push comes to shove, even when Peace is at their very fingertips, it's always something else. People wish for the world and the worldly comforts they know. That's the trap.
To get the information she wants from Aurora, Hope decides to torture her and commands Lizzie to remove her daylight ring. Lizzie attempts to sway her go unheard and does as she commands. Hope opens up the curtains and Aurora begins to burn in the sunlight. She screams, bursts into flames, and sizzling skins visibly disturbing Lizzie.
Landon and the Necromancer awake in Mystic Falls Cemetery. Landon's wish seems to have worked, although Alaric is nowhere to be found.
Taking a break, Lizzie confronts Hope. She thought Hope was going to kill Aurora, not torture her. She tells Hope that Aurora has healed, though still unconscious. They've been at this for hours and Aurora hasn't revealed anything to them. Lizzie wants to try another approach, though Hope is already thinking of something to do. Having stolen a black magic grimoire from Professor Vardemus, Hope intends to recreate something similar to Papa Tunde's Blade, something she learned from Aurora. Lizzie's disgusted with another torture device, meaning that Hope's not listening to her. Hope reminds her about the sire bond, though Lizzie can't forget considering what Hope is forcing her to do. However, she believes her opinion should count for something. Hope explains that a head dive won't work because, for one, it's painless, and two, she's too strong. Lizzie still wants to try given her now weakened state, though Hope would rather continue with torture and gives Lizzie a choice. She can either try a head dive on her own, or sit there and help her with her plan.
The Necromancer and Landon make their way to the Salvatore School, though the latter is wary considering there is not a soul in sight. He still believes that the jinni deceived them. Landon, on the other hand, believes him paranoid. It could easily just be an early Saturday and everyone might still be asleep. Before knocking on the front door, Zied appears to them, startling them both. He explains that once a wish commences, he is tethered to it, though wanted to warn them about something. Landon quips about warning them about not bringing Alaric back, but Zied clarifies that he was unaware of his complication and his soul remains back at the bar. Per their contract, he has granted his wish exactly; "Bring the three of us back to life." Zied does not know why he lingers in Limbo. Landon thinks that he's just trying to get them to burn through another wish, but they won't be fooled. Regardless, Zied offers them his warning. If they're supposedly dead and their friends see him, only for them to eventually fail and use their second wish, this encounter could alter their perception of reality. Every mind is different, but he has seen it drive people mad. With his warning given, he vanishes back to Limbo. Pedro and the Pukwudgie open the front doors, though no one is there. Landon and the Necromancer hid behind the shrubbery; Landon can't risk driving someone mad.
Despite this, Landon comes up with another plan. He appears to and wakes Wade, wearing a sheet covering. He's a ghost. He explains that unfinished business has kept him from passing beyond the spectral plane and needs to find Dr. Saltzman. Wade doesn't believe he's a real ghost, otherwise, he'd know where Alaric is. Wade believes this is still a dream as he's dreamed of Landon coming back to the school. Considering he's not doing his therapy appointments with Emma anymore, he also assumes this must be his subconscious trying to make sense of all the traumatic stuff that they've faced lately. Landon assumes that he's talking about his death, but Wade corrects him, as he's not dead. Landon wants Wade to tell him everything.
Lizzie apologies to Aurora, still on fire from a bit of sunlight. What she's experiencing is unnecessary and inhumane but they can end this if she only opens up her mind to her. Aurora is in a state and believes Lizzie to be her dead brother, Tristan and knows how to defeat Hope. Keeping up the ruse, she inquires if it has something to do with the gods. Lizzie gets Aurora to tell her more of her plan.
Landon and the Necromancer make their way to Mystic Falls Hospital, finding Alaric in a coma. The Necromancer is less thrilled as he's not dead, meaning he's still trapped in Limbo and their wish was wasted. He attempts to fix Alaric with a defibrillator, though Landon stops him. Alaric's heart is not the problem. The Necromancer continues to yell, though Landon gets him to stop. They can't let people know they're alive, should they reset the wish. Though before they can continue, the Ferryman has found them and walks clear through the locked door. Wielding his scythe, he dragged them back to Limbo.
Back in the bar, Alaric fights Zied, repeatedly punching him, though surprised to see Landon and the Necromancer back in Limbo. Alaric is furious that Zied never sent him back, though the Necromancer explained that he technically didn't have to, because he's technically not dead. They come to the conclusion that they wasted their first wish. They want to know what game Zied is playing and he offers them all a drink, wanting to explain everything.
Zied explains that he spent centuries granting wishes to humans, watching their selfish desires lead them to ruin. It was sad, then turned tragic when one of those same humans murdered him. That is how he wound up in Limbo, with a staggering debt owed to the Ferryman. Zied confesses that he knew that the Ferryman would never let them leave Limbo, but was not aware that Alaric was in a coma. He wants something, too. He wishes for Peace, as everyone trapped here should, however, his debt is too great. This bar is a means to collect souls as a workforce; subcontractors to right the wrongs of Limbo and help others reach Peace. The Necromancer questions if he really believes they will become his coin flunkies, though he only quips they will if they fail.
Lizzie continues to pretend to be Tristan, questioning if the gods could kill Hope. Aurora believes that, if not all, they have a singular immensely powerful father. Ben even confirmed her suspicions about the existence of the gods and she was right about the origins of the sarcophagus she stole from the museum. It was crafted by the very hands of a god, along with several like it, to protect them. Lizzie's lost again and questions why the gods would need protection. Aurora doesn't know, though the sarcophagus she recovered was empty, meaning a god walks free. Ben explained to her that mythology has come to know her as Vulcan or Hephaestus or a hundred other names, but always as a man, when in reality she is an impossibly gifted engineer and blacksmith who crafted weapons and fantastic machines for her family of gods. Lizzie realizes she's already met her and admits that Aurora has one crazy plan. That's all that she has considering the Red Oak has been destroyed. She pleads to Lizzie, believing it to be her brother, to release her before Hope returns. However, it's too late. Hope explains that she's not talking to Tristan and turns her around to show her Lizzie who apologizes. Aurora now realizes that she was in a state and remembers that Tristan died in a box at the bottom of the ocean in agony the moment the Hollow killed Elijah. Hope, however, has finished plan B.
The Necromancer, getting frustrated, wants to go ahead and wish himself to Peace, though Landon reminds him he still has the third wish. Based on what they now know, Alaric's wish has a lot to accomplish. It's got to bring their souls back from Limbo, put them back into their bodies, two of which are dead, one of which is alive, and somehow has to bypass the Ferryman's powers so we don't just end up back in Limbo. Alaric has also noticed that Landon seemed pretty shaken up after they returned and questions what else has happened back in the real world. Landon holds on to the secrets and tells him that it can wait. Alaric decides to finish his drink and tasks the two of them to talk to the other patrons, to see if they can figure out how to beat Zied's game.
Lizzie tells Hope that they don't need a plan B. They already have the information they need. Hope, however, has gone through the trouble of creating a dark object. Though it's not nearly as fancy or powerful as Papa Tunde's blade, she hopes it's just as painful. Hope slams the thermostat-turned-dark object into Aurora's chest and activates it with a spell. Aurora screams in pain as it burrows into her chest over her heart.
Landon and the Necromancer returned from speaking with a kraken and believe they've managed to gather some useful intel. No one's ever beat the jinni. In fact the kraken is still playing the game and has been pondering its third and final wish for decades. Landon admits that he was wrong about the jinni and he's using their desperation against them. However, Alaric has already made the second wish as Landon notices the Necromancer's eye has changed colors. He wished for him to become "the Necromancer" once again.
The Necromancer, fighting his darker impulses and apparently rotting, is furious with Alaric. He doesn't understand how he would betray him and then believe he would do as exactly as he said. Alaric believes that the Necromancer can bring them back to life and still use his third wish to reach Peace. He threatens to just use his wish right now, but doesn't know why he won't. Alaric believes it's because he's changed, just like when he sacrificed himself for his students. Alaric explains that if there was any other way, he would have wished for it, but his powers are the only thing that can bring them back to life without the Ferryman interfering. The Necromancer makes them leave the crypt, telling them he needs time to concentrate to do the spell.
Hope and Lizzie are outside the motel room. Aurora's screams are muted with her spell. Lizzie tells her that there's nothing good about what she's doing. She may be a monster, but at least she knows why she's hurting and where she's coming from. Hope is another story. Lizzie berates her because she wanted to end it, until she didn't only to start torturing her. Lizzie reminds her that the only reason she shut off her humanity was because she lost someone she loved, just like Aurora has lost her brother. Despite trying to appeal to Hope's emotions, she explains that hatred is an emotion and you only hate something you love. She believes that Hope hates how much she relates to Aurora
Alaric confronts Landon about the secrets he's keeping. Landon decides to explain why he's keeping them, rather than tell him. He admits that he was afraid of what he'd do. Not that it matters, as he still screwed things up. Alaric reminds him that he came clean about Hope and since then everything that has followed has been a series of increasingly risky, desperate moves. Ultimately, Landon tells him that the secret is not just about Hope, but Lizzie and Josie as well. The Necromancer emerges from the crypt back to his former self. His problem is solved, and just the beginning of theirs. Though he's grateful to be back, he won't be resurrecting them. He'd rather use the final wish to punish them. However, Landon comes clean and explains that if he wanted to torture them, then he would send them back home.
Hope decides to have Lizzie stake Aurora. Perhaps she'll be less judgmental when she has blood on her hands, too. Lizzie won't do it, though Hope uses the sire bond to force her to do just that, handing her a broken chair leg as a stake. Lizzie resists and Hope doubles down, commanding her to drive the stake into her heart. Lizzie screams out and drives the stake into Aurora's chest through to the right of heart, missing it. Hope is surprised that she missed, removes the stake and turns to finish it herself, though Lizzie meant to do that, which means she broke the sire bond. While distracted, Lizzie breaks Hope's neck. With Hope momentarily out of the way, she uses her magic to remove the dark object and release Aurora.
The Necromancer laughs at the surprising new developments to Alaric's life in the mortal world. One daughter is an undead hybrid, the other has left, while Hope has turned into a villain like her father. Landon reasons that if the Necromancer returns them, they'll be heading back into their worst nightmare, plus he gets to keep his wish to break his contract with Zied. Alaric can't believe that Landon has kept this from him, though believed that if the Necromancer could change, so could he. However, the Necromancer believes one thing that Limbo has taught them. It's that we are who we've always been. The Necromancer decides to return Alaric and keep Landon in Limbo. The Necromancer believes that it's perfect. Alaric goes back and fails everybody again, but racked with guilt all the while, knowing that Landon's genuinely decent soul is trapped in Limbo with him, forever. Alaric doesn't like it but Landon wants him to prove them both wrong, to work with his students and save Hope. With his final words, the Necromancer returns Alaric to the mortal world, waking up from his coma.
The Necromancer drags Landon back to the bar, offering Zied his soul for his salvation army. Zied reminds him that he'll be joining Landon too unless he wishes himself to Peace. However, the Necromancer wishes himself to be free of his contract. That is just what Zied expected. Landon assumes that Alaric screwed him over on his way out. Alaric had wished for him to become the Necromancer again, but that his powers only be capable of returning him and Landon back to life. He also specified that if he wished for anything other than Peace, their third and final wish would be rendered null and void. The Necromancer's servitude begins at midnight.
Lizzie and Aurora return to the diner. Aurora wonders why she saved her. In classic Lizzie Saltzman fashion, it was selfish. She couldn't let her die without apologizing, though Aurora doesn't understand. Lizzie called her crazy and was being dismissive and judging her symptoms and not their cause. She was treating Aurora the same way everyone treated her. She used to think that her brain was a weakness, but now believes that maybe all the issues she's struggled with are what allowed her to break the sire bond. In her defense, Aurora claims that she can be quite symptomatic at times. Lizzie empathizes with her because she lost someone she loved, but no amount of lashing out will ever bring them back. Aurora thinks she's trying to get her to forget about Tristen, but that's not the case. She knows the hole a sibling leaves in your heart never goes away. All she's asking is that she do something to heal it, instead of staying stuck on revenge. Aurora doesn't understand. Tristen is dead and there's nothing she can do. Pulling out her notebook, Lizzie has another idea. She believes that these gods she was looking for have all kinds of powers, including the ability to wield and shape time. They could take them back. Back to when Tristan was alive, to when her father wasn't broken, to when Hope had her humanity and Josie was still with her. Aurora believes it to not be a bad idea, though she no longer has any inspiration. She pulls a piece of the sarcophagus out from her bag. Turns out she's already met "Vulcan", and they can start by finding her.
The Necromancer and Landon drink at the bar, though the former is a bit more confident. Though he's doomed to spend eternity in Limbo, by his side, he can still help people, getting them to Peace. If the Necromancer is trapped here, he vows to make his afterlife hell. Landon, however, vows to get him to Peace, keeping his promise.
Alaric stumbles out of this bed, though Wade finds him and helps him recover. Alaric doesn't understand why he's here, though Wade explains that Kaleb was his emergency contact and the hospital called the school. He has been monitoring all of the school's phones in his absence. Kaleb is out parking his car and explains that a lot has changed at the Salvatore School. Alaric already knows and will explain once Kaleb arrives.
On a deserted road outside Mystic Falls, a driver stops in the middle of the road for Hope. The man mistakes her for being on drugs, but Hope explains that drugs numb people and she's experiencing the opposite problem and may actually be starting to feel things, like gratitude and betrayal. She even had the slightest urge to thank him for stopping. The man doesn't understand as she questions him about the definition of humanity. However, despite her rantings, she ultimately decides to kill the man, believing his presence to have been very helpful.
