One Day You Will Understand is the thirteenth episode of the third season of Legacies and the forty-fifth episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
SACRIFICES — Faced with a difficult decision regarding one of his students, Alaric enlists Kaleb and Josie's help to get their perspective. Meanwhile, Cleo opens up about her past. Hope, Landon and Jed also appear.[2]
Plot[]
Kaleb arrives in Alaric's office just in time to witness his phone call asking for the artifact back. Kaleb questions Alaric on his motives, and correctly guesses that Alaric plans to have Cleo put back into the artefact given her secrets.
With Landon seemingly back, Hope becomes curious of the sword he has been carrying and tries to get closer for inspection. She finds that Landon appears out of nowhere, however, and is very protective of the blade, taking the blade from her without uttering a word. Hope finds this weird but does not say anything on the matter, instead, leaves the room.
Having been convinced by Josie to try out the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted, Finch eats breakfast with Josie at the table, but finds the whole ordeal difficult to adjust to. Josie tells her to relax, given everyone is able to be themselves at the school, it is what it was built for. Finch finds this hard to believe, and remarks that Alaric built the school for her and Lizzie, not for everyone else.
Hope uses a locator spell to track Landon to the dock of the Salvatore School. She interrupts his thought process, remarking that she had to make sure that he was the real Landon. The two have a brief conversation, but there is something amiss between the two. The conversation quickly comes to a close when Hope suggests Landon accompany her to Mystic Falls High School.
Furious at Cleo for her secrets, Kaleb confronts her on the matter, revealing that Alaric plans to put her back inside of the artefact. Cleo seems unbothered by the revelation, but is shortly forced by Kaleb to reveal her history. Taking his hands, Cleo projects Kaleb within her memories during her childhood in Nigeria.
The memories begin in 1464, Nigeria, Cleo is seen playing by the river but is distracted when the village warriors leave in haste. Cleo asks her grandmother what is happening, and her grandmother says that the warriors have gone to negotiate with a creature that has been terrorizing the woods. Moments later, a warrior returns and explains that a deal has been struck. With this, Cleo's grandmother tells her that she must go away to protect the village. Cleo finds this difficult to understand, but her grandmother eventually explains that she is a muse like herself and will someday grow to be incredibly powerful. She too must do what she can to protect the villagers. Cleo is not satisfied with this, however, and uses her magic to escape the boundary spell placed upon her.
Exiting the hut, Cleo finds the villagers confronting none other than Malivore. Cleo's grandmother pleads with Cleo to leave, but she refuses and instead offers herself to Malivore instead of her grandmother; an offer which Malivore accepts, therefore taking Cleo as his prisoner. After this revelation, Cleo stops sharing her memories with Kaleb and remarks that we do whatever we can for those we love, a sentiment that brings a tear to Kaleb's eye.
At Mystic Falls High, Hope and Landon arrive to collect the artefact, but Landon finds that he cannot enter the school due to traumatic memories. He remains outside, but momentarily begins fighting with an old bully of his. Hope is shocked when she returns to find Landon badly beating the boy in the car park.
Josie gives Finch a tour of the school, including the gym where she introduces Finch to Jed, the Alpha of the Salvatore School pack. She is unable to introduce Finch as her girlfriend, however, which Finch notices on multiple occasions. Josie is pulled away, however, by Alaric who asks her to talk with Cleo given both he and Kaleb both have alternate interests at heart.
Josie obliges and begins to talk with Cleo, but Cleo is reluctant to talk and instead opts to share more memories. Cleo shows Josie her time with Malivore, including her fashioning animals out of Malivore's mud for him to eat. Eventually, she became tired of Malivore and created him a body. When Malivore refused to let him go, she used the physical form of the body to trap him with a spell for an unknown amount of time. Malivore vowed that he would hunt Cleo for the rest of time.
In the woods, Hope confronts Landon about his behavior and is shocked when he reveals how he escaped from Malivore and the amount of time he has been free. They are attacked moments later, however, by a creature eerily reminiscent of Malivore's first vessel. Working together, the two are able to slay the creature, but the artifact is shattered in the process.
Heading both Josie and Kaleb's advice, Alaric goes to talk with Cleo himself, and she explains the process of escaping the artefact. Cleo tells Alaric that she believes the school is a safe place therefore created the leprechaun to aid with the financial difficulties the school was facing. Furthermore, she accepts responsibility for creating both the Ferryman and Golem Landon, but explains that Malivore sent the banshee and gremlin, therefore were not her creation. When Cleo asks about her future at the Salvatore School, she reveals that Hope's sacrifice is her decision to make, as it always should be. Alaric replies by releasing her from the boundary spell and welcoming her back to the school.
Landon and Hope talk, and Hope tells Landon to take as long as he needs to explain what happened to him. Landon, however, tells Hope that the two exist to destroy each other therefore must stay away from one another. With this, Landon breaks up with Hope and tells her that the two of them should stay away from one another.
Alaric tells Kaleb that he gave Cleo the option to stay at the Salvatore School, but she declined the offer to find another school where she can fit in. With this, Kaleb tells Alaric that they must find her given he has an unanswered question. Unbeknownst, however, Cleo finds herself teaming up with Landon at the bus stop in town, and the two leave Mystic Falls on their quest to destroy Malivore.
