Emma has this prism that simulates a conversation. She makes me use it to talk to my mom and my dad when I'm in a state.
Lizzie explains the prism to Hope in I'll Tell You a Story

The Prism is an enchanted crystalline prism capable of refracting one's own subconscious memories to simulate a conversation with one's self. The subconscious manifestation can take a variety of forms, such as of loved ones or various versions of one's self.

Description[]

The Prism is an upright, transparent crystalline prism that comes to a triangular point and smooth sides. More crystals encompass around its base.

Throughout Legacies Series[]

Season One[]

In I'll Tell You a Story, Lizzie questions Hope about the situation around Landon. Hope tells her that she's trying to figure out what to say to him and Lizzie suggests using Emma's prism to talk with her subconsciousness. She explains that Emma would make her use it to talk to her mom and dad whenever she was in a state. Lizzie traded her the prism in exchange for Hope making her a banana cream pie.

Later, Lizzie hands Hope the prism, warning her that the first use is sometimes a little weird. In return, Hope gives Lizzie a book from Alaric's office titled "The History of the Gemini Coven", remarking that it could have something written about the Merge inside. With the prism in hand, Hope uses it to talk with her subconsciousness, which takes the form of Landon. She tells Landon that she is sorry for anything she had previously said, particularly revolving around his mom, and didn't mean to hurt his feelings. She was trying to protect him from being hurt. "Landon" asks if that is everything, and accepts her apology, but questions if that was actually what she wanted to say. Hope begins arguing with herself, remarking that the imaginary Landon is infuriating. Later, she used it again, admitting that what she said before was true but also hate it when people leave. She thought she was over losing her parents, but after the last couple of days and after seeing him lying there in the woods, thinking that you were dead. It overwhelmed her. She explains that every time she loses someone, this voice in her head tells her "It's your fault." She also let it slip that she loved Landon and wanted him to stay, though she didn't mean to reveal she loved him.

Speaking to Landon, she also admitted to herself what she believed all day. Landon was in trouble and she knew that to be the truth.

Season Two[]

In I'll Never Give Up Hope, Hope, freed from Malivore though forgotten by everyone, used the prism to talk with "Landon". Landon tells her not to leave town and to go back and tell him everything about herself in hopes that he can remember something. Things become complex when Hope mentions the kiss with Josie, but she admits that she isn't mad as it isn't his fault given he doesn't know she exists. Hope questions if everyone is happy without her, and asks for Landon to leave her when he cannot give her an answer.

In It Will All Be Painfully Clear Soon Enough, Hope continues to use the prism to see Landon, though after Lizzie and Josie arrive, she admits that she doesn't need it anymore.

Later, Josie and Landon devise a dangerous plan with Professor Vardemus, who's actually Ryan Clarke in disguise. They want to use the prism to create an otherwise fake Landon. Simulandon, as they called him, was created by manifesting Landon's subconscious using the prism, in which Josie gave it form. The prism was embedded in the newly formed golem's chest and the trident used to bind the mind, body and spirit of Simulandon in conjunction with a spell using black magic. Josie also bound Simulandon to the lunar cycle so when the moon reaches its apex the following night, he would disintegrate, after being sent through the Malivore portal.

Through a series of events, Ryan's subconscious was formed to transfer into the golem as opposed to Hope.

In This Christmas Was Surprisingly Violent, Hope altered the golem's form to appear like Ryan. Ultimately, Ryan decided to jump into the Malivore portal and distinifrate from within, closing the portal. However, before he could do the noble deed, he was decapitated by The Necromancer. Simulandon form, however, disintegrated after the Necromancer threw his head into the portal, closing it.

Season Three[]

In You Can't Run From Who You Are, Josie noticed that Wade Rivers had the prism, using it to LARP with. Borrowing it, she used it to speak with her subconscious. However, when she used it, it took the form of her dark alter ego. She believed the prism to be malfunctioning, though dropping it and picking it back up proved that it was just her subconsciousness and he had actually manifested.

Shocked, Josie asks why she can never be happy, and Dark Josie tells her that she can never lead a happy human life, but can lead a happy magical life, just as she was always supposed to. She also helped Josie to see that she can't have a real relationship if she's repressing an essential part of herself.

Later, after Hope is infected by a berbalang, Josie asks her subconscious for help in reading Sanskrit, an ancient language which she has forgotten from the previous semester. Dark Josie asks her why she should care, but Josie snaps at her subconscious because she cares. Ultimately, her subconsciousness helps her translate the text, but tells her that she is useless in her efforts to combat the monster as she has no magic. While Josie believes this to be a ploy by Dark Josie to trick her into taking back her magic, Dark Josie tells her that she will always be a part of her no matter what.

Season Four[]

In Someplace Far Away From All This Violence, outside in the garden at the Salvatore School, Cleo chats with Kaleb, rather it's her subconsciousness through the prism. She stands at the Red Oak tree, wondering with herself if the tree can really kill a tribrid. She is certain that it will. She is less sure about who she should share this information with. Kaleb questions that she's here talking with him, but Cleo counters that keeping secrets has only ever brought her trouble and she wants to trust her own subconsciousness, as well as her friends. Kaleb doesn't believe she can trust them with his information. He explains that they've all done dumb things for what they've believed were good reasons for the people they care about. Case in point, Kaleb handing Hope over to Malivore to save her. She admits this is not the answer she wished to hear, but Kaleb believes it could be the right one, otherwise she would be talking with the real Kaleb. If she is going to make a mistake this time, it will be trusting her friends and not by deceiving them. Her subconscious hopes she is right and he is wrong and disappears.

Later that night, Cleo has another talk with her subconscious. Landon had told her about the letter he wrote while they were trapped within the darkness together. She believed that his words could have reached Hope, but she was wrong. Instead she got another answer. She thought she would have found a moment to tell the others about the tree, but she no longer believes that to be a good idea. Looking over at Finch unconscious on a couch, she reiterates her subconsciousness' words from before. They do stupid things for the people they love. If Finch and Ethan had known of the tree's existence when they confronted Hope, today's outcome would have been worse. Either way, she was right, it was her subconscious and Kaleb tells her to keep her hopes up and that she'll figure this out. Kaleb disappears after she sets the prism down on the floor.

In Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found, Alaric uses the prism to summon a manifestation of his subconscious–his former Hunter-self. His subconscious believes that bringing him here was pointless. His daughter is a vampire, and, if it were up to him, she'd be dead. However, Alaric reasons that if that were true, then the school wouldn't exist. He believes that if he's going to lead them in a war against the gods, he needs to make sure he's looked at every play on the table. That there isn't some ruthless angle that his Hunter instincts sees, that he doesn't. The Hunter part of him tells him there's nothing he can do and his students will be wiped out, and he'll die. The only thing his subconscious can now relate to him is that he's still a drunk. With his innermost thoughts revealed to him, the manifestation disappears.
