The "Artifact" is an unnamed enchanted object that was stated to be able to grant your heart's most impossible desire. Triad Industries referred to it as "Project Pandora". Cleo inspired Leonardo DaVinci to create the artifact and she imbued it with magic to seal away and shield her from Malivore until it could be opened by the one capable of killing Malivore; Hope Mikaelson.
Description[]
The artifact is an intricately designed container with projections sticking out from the swirled lid.
History[]
Around the late-to-early 1400-1500s, Leonardo DaVinci was inspired by Cleo to create the unnamed artifact. Leonardo kept the artifact details within his blueprints. Cleo then imbued the artifact with magic that could shield her from Malivore and sealed herself away for centuries.
Sometime around the late-to-early 1700-1800s, Napoléon Bonaparte came into the possession of the artifact. Later, around the late 1800s Grigori Rasputin would come into the possession of the artifact.
In Belgium, 1933, Ryan Clarke and Triad agents located Albert's cabin in search of the mysterious artifact. He and his men tossed the placed so that they would find it before der Führer, though Albert escaped with it. Eventually, Ryan came into possession of the artifact and performed various tests at Triad Industries in his objective to open the artifact. Nothing proved useful.

Season Three[]
In This is What It Takes, Alaric learned of the artifact from his research and Kaleb tracked its location to Pinky and Sons Pawn Shop. Alaric and Hope confronted Pinky whose real business was selling back-market supernatural artifacts. He had the mysterious artifact that Alaric sought but knew not how to open it and refused to sell it.
After barely escaping Hope and her death spell, Alaric tracked Pinky to Mystic Tap, where he forcefully "negotiated" the artifact from Pinky. As soon as he gave it to Hope the artifact reacted, seemingly, specifically to her presence and she made her wish.
With her wish to bring back Landon apparently not happening, she took the artifact and dropped it in the lake on the Salvatore Boarding School property. Though unknown to her, the artifact opened and released a bright light
In Do All Malivore Monsters Provide This Level of Emotional Insight?, Alaric, seeking additional insight into the artifact, fished it out of the lake and dropped it off with Dorian, hoping he would be able to uncover its identity.
After a day's worth of research Dorian was unfortunately not able to identify the artifact, but he was able to connect it with powerful figures in history, such as Albert Einstein, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Grigori Rasputin, each infamously known for various events in history.
In You Can't Run From Who You Are, Alaric is inspired by Cleo to search Triad Industries for clues about the artifact. Since the artifact was in Triad's possession, they may have records. Cleo and Kaleb accompany him and begin searching Triad's ransacked armory and uncovers their records room. Alaric eventually finds detailed blueprints dating back to the Renaissance, specifically Leonardo DaVinci. Alaric assumes he's the one who made the artifact. However, the fire suppression system activates and the blueprints are lost; turning into ash before him.
Later that night, Alaric calls to inform Dorian of his findings. He literally had the answers to the artifact in his hands and lost them. He does have one clue to go on, though. The Triad file with DaVinci's blueprints in it had a name: Project Pandora. Both of them believe it's related to the mythical box — Pandora's box — that contains all the world's ills.
In I Was Made To Love You, the Necromancer raised Leonardo DaVinci's spirit from the spectral plane in Alaric's attempt to determine the history of the artifact. However, due to the language barrier, he is unable to communicate with him to determine its origins.
Elsewhere, Cleo reveals to Hope that she released her from the artifact where she had spent centuries trapped within. Cleo attempted to force Hope to embrace her full potential, as she was the one able to open the artifact and to, hopefully, end Malivore.
In One Day You Will Understand, Hope and Landon retrieve the artifact from Dorian at Mystic Falls High school for Alaric. After Cleo attempted to kill Hope and force her to turn, he intended to seal her back within the artifact; Hope and Landon were attacked by the Vitruvian Man, who hoped to steal the artifact. During their fight, the artifact is destroyed.
