Ben confirmed my suspicions about the existence of the gods. That I was right about the origins of that sarcophagus I stole from the museum. It was crafted by the very hands of a god, along with several like it, to protect them.
Aurora describes the sarcophagi in Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost

The Sarcophagi were created by Jen as a means to protect her father, Ken, and the other gods until the destruction of Malivore. However, Jen's true purpose was to lock them away forever because she didn't want to become like them.

There are five remaining sarcophagi in which Ken, "Chronos", and three other unnamed gods are sleeping in. There was a sixth, empty sarcophagus that was presumably made for Jen under her deception towards her father. The god known as Chronos, however, is revealed by Jen to not be sleeping in one of the sarcophagi.

History[]

In I Can't Be the One to Stop You, Aurora revealed to Lizzie her means of stopping. She explained that the sarcophagus was known in legend to be some sort of prisoner jail, said to be capable of containing a god and believed she could use it to trap Hope Mikaelson, the tribrid, within it. Once she had her locked inside, she planned to subject her to eternal torment at the bottom of the ocean. After Aurora's plan failed and Hope regained possession of her body, Hope attempted to destroy the sarcophagus with her magic so that it couldn't be used against her again. All of her attempts proved futile.

In The Story of My Life, Hope continued to try and destroy the artifact to no avail. She took the sarcophagus to Professor Vardemus, where under his preliminary analysis, concluded that it was ancient and would have to run more tests to divine its purpose and origin. Not visible to the naked eye, the 500 pound sarcophagus is scrawled in blood in multiple languages, speaking of the gods of a dozen, or maybe more, different cultures. After it was stolen by Jen, she threw it at Hope, seemingly destroying it in the process, whereas Hope's magic did not affect it.

In Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost, Ben previously confirmed Aurora's suspicions about the existence of the gods. That she was right about the origins of the sarcophagus she stole from a museum and that it was crafted by the very hands of a god, along with several like it. She assumed it was for protection, though didn't know what specifically. The singular sarcophagus that she recovered was empty, which she concluded that a god walked upon the earth and would know where the others are. After Lizzie broke the sire bond from Hope, she stole the broken piece of sarcophagus and explained to Aurora that she had already met one of the gods and could use the piece to find her.

In Was This the Monster You Saw?, since Lizzie can't technically track Jen, a god, she used the sarcophagus shard to locate more of the "weird god metal" the sarcophagus is made from. Eventually, she finds Jen's base of operation with a cargo container with at least four sarcophagi.

In The Only Way Out is Through, Jen explains to Aurora and Lizzie that she created the sarcophagi so that her family would be spelled to sleep until Malivore's destruction. However, Jen lied and betrayed her family, keeping them locked up because she didn't want to be like them.

In Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found, Ben steals the sarcophagi from Jen after Lizzie and Aurora's plan to distract Jen goes awry. Lizzie learns from Jen that the god they know as "Chronos" is not locked away in one of the sarcophagi and that Ben is dangerous because he wants his curse removed. In order for that to happen is by his father, which he'd only break as a boon in exchange for his freedom. Ben also kidnaps Aurora and, after leaving with the five sarcophagi, opens one.

Trivia[]

  • In Was This the Monster You Saw?, after Lizzie is trapped by Jen's booby trap, she claims that her magic doesn't work on god stuff, despite earlier her spell was using the sarcophagus shard to track the metal it was made with.
