Renewal of The Vampire Diaries for the 2015-2016 season was announced on January 11, 2015, by The CW's President, Mark Pedowitz.

It was moved to Fridays.[1]

Season Summary[]

In the wake of Elena Gilbert's goodbye, season seven begins with some characters trying to recover while others falter. As Lily tries to drive a wedge between the Salvatore brothers, we'll still hold onto hope that Stefan and Caroline's love story is strong enough to survive. Based on the series of books by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Outerbanks Entertainment, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios. The series was developed by Kevin Williamson (The Following, Scream) & Julie Plec (The Originals, Kyle XY, Wasteland), who serve as executive producers along with Leslie Morgenstein (Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars) and Caroline Dries (Melrose Place, Smallville).

Season seven of the The Vampire Diaries found our heroes rebuilding their world without Elena. Confronted by the prospect of a decades-long wait for Elena's return, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) struggled with his heartbreak and relied on his contentious but profound friendship with Bonnie (Kat Graham). Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice King) began their much-anticipated relationship, which was complicated by Caroline's unexpected role as surrogate mother to the infant twins left behind when Alaric (Matt Davis) lost his wife. Meanwhile, Damon pursued a vendetta against his mother Lily (guest star Annie Wersching), who had abandoned her sons to care for a vicious brood of vampire-witches called the Heretics – one of whom, Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore), had loved Stefan ever since their romantic encounter in a previous century. Lily's misguided choices ultimately caused her own tragic demise and put Mystic Falls in the sights of a formidable nemesis: Rayna Cruz (guest star Leslie-Anne Huff), a supernatural vampire-hunter. Rayna targeted Stefan, forcing him to go on the run and leaving Caroline to make a new start with Alaric. Determined to defeat Rayna, Damon enlisted the help of the Armory, a shadowy group with family ties to Bonnie's boyfriend Enzo (Michael Malarkey). But the Armory's deeper agenda robbed Bonnie of her magic and jeopardized her life. To remedy the crisis, Damon and Enzo had to venture into the Armory's occult vault, where an evil presence overcame them.[2] The triangle of Stefan, Caroline and Alaric will team up with Bonnie in season eight to search for the two most important men in her life – even though Damon and Enzo may be long past saving.

  • The seventeenth episode of this season will be the 150th episode overall.

  • Nina Dobrev, Michael Trevino and Steven R. McQueen are not part of this season's main cast.[49]
    • This is the first season to bill Michael Trevino as "Special Guest Starring", rather than "Starring".
  • This is the first season in which Marguerite MacIntyre doesn't appear in any episodes.
  • Nina Dobrev says she's willing to come back for the series finale as Elena Gilbert to conclude her story on a happy note. Though it's possible they could get her to return earlier as Elena for flashbacks or going inside her head but after some time has passed.
  • For the first time in the series history Nina Dobrev was not at San Diego Comic Con for a season of The Vampire Diaries or to sign autographs.
  • This is the sixth season in which Caroline Forbes is a vampire.
  • This is the third season in which Tyler Lockwood is solely a werewolf, but only as a guest character.
  • This is the first season in which Elena Gilbert will not appear as either a human or vampire. Though she will probably be mentioned by other characters during the season.
  • There will be only 2 human characters in the main cast with Matt and Alaric. This is the least amount of humans in the main cast since the series started.
    • The most was in Season One with a total of 6 all together out of the main cast, including Vicki Donovan who died and was replaced by Alaric as main cast character. The humans were Elena, Jeremy, Jenna, Caroline, Matt, Vicki (died in Haunted) and Alaric.
  • Are you plotting for Season 6 to be the final season, or is that not on your radar yet?
No. It's not on our radar yet. You could ask 10 different people that question and you'd get 10 different answers, in terms of how long the life of the show is. Warner Bros. would say, "17 seasons!" And I think I would say, "Seven!" [Laughs] Presumably we'll land somewhere closer to my wishes or theirs, depending on the circumstances.
"We're trying to take the show away from the massive genre extravaganza where each season we try to top each other with the bigger, bad, more exciting mythologies and boil it back down to the beginning, which is tension, suspense, romance, psychological horror, simple horror, vampires living in secret, people discovering their secret and coming after them," Plec promises. "Our heroes who have splintered off need to find their way back to each other emotionally and geographically as they fight to restore order to their home so they can actually return and not be scattered for good." [50]
  • TVLINE — Do you have an end in sight?
How much further beyond Season 7 could the show go when you're dealing with a show like The Vampire Diaries, which kind of gave the network a boost it really needed, and has continued to have such a loyal and passionate fan base, I don't think we necessarily get to make the decision about when it's over. The decision will be made by a lot of things: How much story is left to tell? How many actors are left to tell that story? How many shows like The Flash will come along, with great success, so that the network doesn't necessarily need us in the way they used to? That could take a couple years, or it could go on as long as possible.
  • Starting this season, Lily will serve as the big bad.[51] She will be appearing on a major recurring basis.[52]
  • Caroline will not be part of every episode this season, probably due to Candice King's pregnancy.[53]
  • Wesley and Somerhalder may step behind the camera again. Both Wesley and Somerhalder each directed hours of The CW drama last season (Wesley's second time and Somerhalder's first), and Dries says she'd be open to having them return this season. "We want to keep nurturing them, so if Paul and Ian want to do it again, they did such a good job [last time]," she says
  • Have you begun to plan the end of The Vampire Diaries, or are you hoping there will be a 10th season and an 11th season and so on?
JP: I think that's a loaded question because there are so many things attached to it. I've always said that as long as there are good stories to tell, this is a show that can continue because people love these characters and love the stories and we have a big crew-family that loves their jobs. As long as it feels fresh and not like a burden or a struggle, there's no reason not to continue. There are certainly many fans who would argue that there are a million reasons not to continue now that Elena's gone, but that's their opinion, and mine is different. If people stop watching because they don't like the show without Elena, or they don't like it without another character that may leave eventually, then we'll all reassess, because I also don't want to go out limping. Everyone is going to have their say about the creative strength of the show moving forward, but as long as we feel like what we're doing is good and our bosses feel like we're doing good work and the feedback we get from fans is that we're doing good work, then there's no reason to stop doing good work.
  • How are you feeling about the stories you've begun to break for next year?
JP: We feel great. We've got not just the first half of the season marked out, but we have sort of the big mythology for the full season and a launching point for Season 8. To have that already is really thrilling and it let us go on our very brief vacations with a little bit of clear heads and light hearts. I think that the beauty of this show is you have the Salvatore brothers who are so powerful, you have Caroline Forbes who is an epic character, and Bonnie Bennett, and Alaric Saltzman, and Matt Donovan, and Enzo… He needs a last name, I'm realizing. But there are a lot of stories to tell, a lot of relationship dynamics to play out, and a lot of mystery to build. We're very excited about the season, and I think the actors specifically are really jazzed that it's going to be a season based in tension, suspense, some vampire drama, some folklore, some mystery, and not just built around a love triangle. That certainly started to wear out its welcome amongst the actors and the writers. There's only so much of that you can write before you start to feel like you're getting a little stale. Given the choice, I'm sure we'd all prefer to have Nina still on the show, but if there is an upside to this situation, it is the freedom to break away from that paradigm and spread our wings a little bit.
  • Question: Any chance we'll see Elena back on The Vampire Diaries this season? —Ashley
Ausiello: Not if we're lucky, Ashley. According to executive producer Julie Plec, the hope is still to bring Nina Dobrev's character back for the end of the series, so "unless something catastrophic happens" (Plec's words) and this ends up becoming the final season, don't expect to see Ms. Gilbert in 2016. "I basically committed to Ian [Somerhalder] and Paul [Wesley] that when they're ready to be done, I'll be done," she adds. "They could be ready very soon, or they could really want to stick it out. Right now, that's up to them. I'm with them as long as I feel like I can keep telling stories for them." That said, "there is still a chapter of [Elena's] story left to be told," so Plec says she'll "take [Dobrev] for whatever she's willing to do to tell that story." [54]
