“ | Maybe I can't kill you. But I can make you wish you were dead. | ” |
The Devil Comes Here and Sighs is the eighteenth episode of the third season of The Originals and the sixty-second episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
IT'S JAZZ FEST IN NEW ORLEANS – As the city celebrates its annual Jazz Fest, an unlikely team of Mikaelson foes joins forces to take Klaus hostage. Leading the charge to get their brother back, Elijah and Freya face off against a powerful force like none they've ever seen before, while Hayley and Cami set their own risky plan in motion to rescue Klaus. Meanwhile, when Kol's erratic behavior worsens, Davina has no choice but to turn to Marcel and Vincent for help.
Plot[]
Lucien shows Aurora the serum with Freya's blood imbued with dark magic, and tells her it's made him entirely new. His bite is lethal even to an Original. He proposes to her with it, to join him in living out their immortal lives together and she will have his undying love and all the revenge she desires. But Aurora says she can't accept his offer as long as Tristan suffers, and he further promises her she will get Tristan back by the end of the day, or kill Elijah's death to put out Tristan's suffering.
Davina takes Kol out on a date to St. James Infirmary. He says it's a bad idea with so many people there, but Davina assures him no magic can enter. As soon as he walks past the threshold, he feels better and thanks Davina.
Klaus is unable to enter Camille's home, as she's put it under her neighbor's name and compelled her to forget. He says he doesn't need to enter, just wanted to make sure she's alright. He leaves, and down the street, sees Lucien who disappears a few seconds later. Klaus heads to a secluded area, with Papa Tundé's blade in hand, but Lucien is too strong for him now. Lucien won't kill him yet, as he needs to use Klaus to get Elijah. He twists Klaus' hand and the blade absorbs into Klaus. Camille watches, afraid, but isn't caught.
Vincent thinks the Ancestors see Lucien as a weapon, and says someone has to convince them there's a better way. He leaves to visit the cemetery.
Freya is still working on the Sigil, a complicated magical symbol weaponized and condensed to its most potent form. Camille loudly bangs on the door and asks to enter the compound, as Freya has put it under her name. She tells them Lucien ambushed and took Klaus away, knocking him around like it was nothing. Camille followed them back to his penthouse. Lucien texts Elijah, demanding his presence at The Whiskey Cask alone.
Lucien pulls the blade out of Klaus, who is bound to chains and wood by the ancient Egyptian keen on suppressing evil. Klaus insults him. Aurora shows the vial of serum, and taunts Klaus of what's to come for him when she's more powerful. Lucien has business to attend to elsewhere, and reminds Aurora to not kill Klaus yet, as he would hate to miss it.
Vincent is at the cemetery, speaking to the Ancestors. He tells them they made him Regent to lead the witches, but asks how he can be a leader if he's jerked around like a puppet. They don't respond. Van Nguyen laughs and tells him the Ancestors don't want Vincent to be Regent anymore. Van throws him back. Vincent doesn't have access to the Ancestors' power. Van is now Regent.
After failing to soften and seduce Aurora, she drinks the serum. They continue to insult and try to hurt each other with words, and Aurora then tortures him.
Elijah and Lucien meet. He wants Tristan's whereabouts or he will kill Elijah, but the latter doesn't know. Elijah thinks he doesn't even really care, he just wants Aurora's affections. He demands Klaus back, but Lucien attacks, only to be held back by Freya's Sigil.
Davina and Kol are enjoying themselves, but he starts losing control. Davina tests her magic, and realizes the Ancestors are trying to undo the anti-magic spell. Marcel snaps his neck, to prevent a bloodbath and freeing Davina to help Vincent.
Just as Aurora is about to drive the stake into her heart to be reborn, Camille knocks on the door. Aurora says Camille did not think things through, but Hayley comes out and punches her hand in her chest. Klaus yells for her to stop, as Aurora had taken the serum. Distracted, Hayley gets knocked out.
Davina and Vincent channel each other to stop the Ancestors from breaking through and destroying their neutral zone. Marcel tells Kol he has to leave, to get away from the Ancestors' control and to keep Davina safe.
The Strix surround Lucien, but he says the Ancestors are on his side and won't let Freya stop him. He walks out of the Sigil symbol, and attacks the Strix.
Aurora tortures Camille by forcing her into the apartment uninvited. Her eyes bleed out, and Klaus begs her to stop. Camille fights back, and Hayley wakes up just in time to knock Aurora back and give Camille enough time to inject a syringe into Aurora.
Kol feels better when he gets out of New Orleans, but starts desiccating, so he runs immediately back into the city limits and feels his rage again.
Lucien watches footage of Aurora telling Klaus she'll never see Lucien as anything more than a means to an end. Klaus smiles at the hidden camera, revealing he knew he'd be recorded.
Freya says her spell will keep Aurora down long enough to use the serum in her blood to figure out how to kill her and Lucien.
Lucien visits Camille. He reveals he killed her neighbor, allowing him to pass the threshold and attack Camille, biting her.

Behind the Scenes[]
- This episode marks Leah Pipes' 50th appearance as Camille O'Connell.
- Jesse Warn has directed numerous episodes of Spartacus and Arrow, so his knowledge of fight sequences is particularly deep. Also, he set the bar high for The Originals when he directed the massive Klaus vs. Marcel's Army battle in season 1's "River in Reverse." Needless to say, the cast, crew, and writers were incredibly excited to give him three fight scenes to work with in this episode. With Jesse's guidance, our stunt coordinator, Dave Morizot, had a field day with all three fights, and our cast came to play when we filmed them. Extra special props to both Joseph Morgan and Andy Lees, who were so prepared for their fights that what you see on screen is 95 percent actually them. Their stunt doubles had exceptionally boring days warming the bench.
- We love showcasing real regional bands, and in this episode we were able to get both Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics from Atlanta and Blackfoot Gypsies from Nashville performing their own original songs. Shortly after doing this episode, Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics went on to perform at SXSW.
- In the Klaus-Lucien alley fight, Joseph's stunt double Jeremy left his warming bench and was hurled into that car by an air ram. The crushed windshield you see was the actual result of his impact. He got it in one take, it was amazing, and he walked away without a scratch. All hail professional stunt people.
- The "blood" in the bag that Nathaniel's drinking from is actually a tasty cherry and pomegranate-flavored corn syrup mixed with a thickening agent for proper consistency.
- While we were filming, our first assistant director Tony got engaged to his girlfriend Katherine! They met working together during the first two seasons of The Originals. Congrats to them.[2]
