Trivia

  • Antagonists: Damon Salvatore and Sybil.
  • This is the eighth and last mid-season finale of the series.[2] This is also the first mid-season finale to be on the seventh episode.
  • “It’s a flashback, and I believe it’s the next episode,” he says of his scruffy new persona. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen Bearded Stefan — he’s never had a beard. I did a play over the summer and I grew out a beard for the role, then Julie saw my beard, and I think she loved it. So when we were flashing back to this era we’ve never seen, she was like, ‘Let’s get that beard back.'”[3]
  • Friday’s Vampire Diaries winter finale (The CW, 8/7c) doubles as this season’s big Christmas episode, and Candice King tells TVLine to brace for information overload.“Basically, you’re going to get a lot of answers to questions you’ve had for a while,” King says, adding, “and we, of course, pose more questions. You’ll learn a lot about Matt’s dad, and the history of [the Donovan] family in Mystic Falls. You’ll also see Damon and Stefan, and what happens next for them.”[4]
  • Question: I can’t wait for the Christmas episode of The Vampire Diaries. Care to give the gift of scoop? –AshleyAusiello: Well, Ashley, it isn’t going to be a happy holiday — though if you’ve been watching the show for the past seven seasons, you probably already guessed that. Candice King promises lots of tension between Caroline and Sybil, which she calls “the beginning of a lot of moments they’re going to share together in the coming weeks.” There’a also a scene in which Sybil gets to carve the holiday bird, a task she accomplishes “very aggressively.” (Shocker.)[5]
  • Caroline learned she was going to lose her fiancé and her children in the same day. What is her state of mind like going into this week's episode?Candice King: She's definitely not walking on sunshine and singing "Jingle Bells." She's pretty upset and kind of in denial, and just realizing that she's lost everything she loves. Luckily, she still does have 24 hours left with Stefan and so he has some special ideas up his sleeve.[6]
  • Does Alaric really plan on following through with the deal to take the twins away?King: Yes. That's what they agreed to last week, and Caroline wants what's best for the girls and wants them to be safe. So as hard as it is for her to sacrifice her time with then, she understand that they have to go somewhere else for a while. And as hard as it is for her to accept, she does fully support that.
  • How will Caroline and Stefan spend their last day together?King: Even though there's a whole day that's been planned, perfect and plans don't really go well together. There will be some surprises, there will be some curve balls and there will be some interruptions.
  • Damon and Sybil crash their Christmas dinner. How does Caroline react to having to host them?King: Everything has gone so horribly wrong that she's just kind of saying, "Screw it, the more chaos the merrier at this point."
  • What are Damon and Sybil's intentions?King: They have their own plan. They have their own reasons. But of course, they're not necessarily going to show all their cards at the beginning of the meal. So you're going to see a lot of Sybil and Damon toying around with the other dinner guests, which are Matt and Matt's father. So we're going to learn a lot about Matt's father and his history with Mystic Falls and why Sybil and Damon are so intrigued by him.
  • Caroline was there for Bonnie (Kat Graham) after she lost Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and her magic. Will we see Caroline really lean on Bonnie during this troubled time?King: We're going to see Bonnie reach out for Caroline to lean on her. I think Caroline is definitely going through a hard time, and we're going to have some really wonderful Caroline and Bonnie moments.
  • With everything hanging over their heads, can fans still expect some touching Caroline and Stefan moments this week?King: Absolutely! There will definitely be sweet Caroline and Stefan moments.
  • “The day changes a couple times,” Candice King says of Caroline’s Christmas Eve. “Once Caroline thinks the day is going to go one way, it changes. It’s going to be a lot of twists and turns and a lot of really big moments.”[7]
  • When it comes to her daughters, Caroline does get to spend at least one more day with them before Alaric takes them somewhere safe. “Caroline just wants her daughters to be safe, even if that means sacrificing what she wants,” King says. “Obviously that’s not an easy decision. We will see her with the girls this week, and as it is the Christmas episode, there’s going to be a whole bunch of emotions coming out. What the holidays bring out in real life, it brings out just as many emotions in Mystic Falls.”
  • And yet, King says fans might be surprised with how much fun Caroline also manages to have during this emotional time. “We’re definitely going to see a different side of the way that she handles things this week, and it’s actually kind of funny,” she says. “She gets to have fun a little bit. We’ve seen her hold it together the best she can, and we’re going to see her let loose in a different way than we’re used to seeing her deal with the chaos that Mystic Falls brings.”
  • But Caroline isn’t the only one having big moments in the finale. According to King, we will hear a little bit of everybody’s story. “Stefan and Damon are going to have some moments, Caroline and Stefan are going to have some moments, Alaric and Caroline are going to have some moments, Bonnie and Enzo, and even Seline and Sybil,” she says. “We, across the board, get to see how everyone’s doing this holiday season.”
  • For the first time, Damon and Stefan have their humanity off at the same time.
