We're trying to be better people, are we not? I can't deprive you of your happiness when it's right there in front of you. I will raise the god of time to get my family back. You go to yours.

The Only Way Out is Through is the fourteenth episode of the fourth season of Legacies and the sixty-second episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

IN AND OUT – The Super Squad rallies together to test their abilities, with help from Vardemus. Hope experiences some vivid dreams, causing some mixed emotions. Meanwhile, Landon continues on his quest for peace. Also appearing Alaric, Lizzie, MG, Kaleb, Jed, Ethan and Cleo.[2]

Plot[]

Hope dreams of her humanity returning. Though she doesn't believe she is scary, she is getting stronger. The nightmare ends with her waking up.

The Salvatore School begins a new day. MG comments to Alaric how weird everything feels so normal. Hope's been at the school for about 12 hours and hasn't put anyone into a coma yet. Alaric is less optimistic, believing the other shoe will drop. MG believes that Hope's humanity is flickering and they could perhaps nudge it along, perhaps with a profound emotional discovery. They intend to use the Therapy Box, but Hope has beaten them to it and smashed the box with a hammer. Hope has another plan, specifically developing a battle plan against the gods. Alaric reminds her that they know nothing about fighting gods, but Hope has already taken the liberty of inviting Professor Vardemus to the school.

Jen works on a new welding project and tells Lizzie and Aurora she's not talking about her family. They've come with food to make amends and to bribe her with an offering. Aurora pleads with her, explaining that hearing about her family is a matter of great importance. Ultimately, Jen accepts their offerings.

Rupert has come with a new device, a Manticulum of his own design. He explains that it uses algorithmic magic to calculate probabilities. MG specifically wonders how it will help them fight the gods, but Hope explains that, on its own, it can't. She intends to use Wade and run it like a super-accurate D&D campaign while the manticulum will tell them the outcome of any attack or defense. All they need to do is encode their powers into the device.

Landon has a booth set up to help trapped souls to get to peace, as per his service to Zied. The Necromancer sits atop the booth, complaining about their new insufferable overlord. Landon tries to compromise with him. If they help Zied get to peace, then they'll be free of him. The Necromancer has a counterpoint, believing that maybe it's better to not let things go and to hold on to the past. He proclaims to the passerbyers that forgiveness is for suckers. Landon realizes that he's trying to get them fired. The only way to get out of a terrible job is to suck at it. Besides, they're already dead and he believes there's nothing worse Zied can do to them.

Kaleb reviews Wade's scores of his and MG's powers. He believes that he's been done dirty by Wade, but he assures him that it's only preliminary guesses, such as that MG's only slightly faster than Kaleb. They'll need to run some tests to confirm the stats. Wade also notes that, given his dragon powers, he has a plus-20 to defense and a plus-40 for offense. In a straight fight, he could definitely beat MG, provided that he catches him. Next on the roster is Ethan; he has the teleportation and intangibility of a Pukwudgie, though believes the invisibility comes from another monster. Professor Vardemus asks for a demonstration, though Ethan still cannot control his powers and cannot teleport across the room. Cleo is up next, though Wade's stat sheet is out of date, given her new circumstances. She tells them she's basically human and though she's not as impressive without using her magic, she still wants to fight. Professor Vardemus commends her courage. Ben would also like to help, though he's forbidden from fighting against his family due to his father's curse. He offers that he can tell them what they would do in a fight and that he should play the side of the enemy in this game. Hope is the last one remaining to test, though she declines. She's had Wade draw up a new, humanity-off, stat sheet. He explains that she's basically the perfect fighter. Hop has incredible magical power levels, unencumbered by morality, with no discernible weaknesses. Her humanity, however, appears to her, noting that she's seeing people who aren't really there.

Professor Vardemus summons a battlefield for their practice session while Hope's humanity continues to appear to her. Rupert explains that vampires can move across the board in one turn and the speed of the gods varies. He has four hidden figures covered in sheets. He took the liberty of creating some automatons for the purposes of their game, using magic to sculpt them. The four automatons are Aurora, Jen, Ken, the father of an entire family of gods, and Lizzie. While Alaric is sure that Lizzie wouldn't fight against them, Rupert explains that to be sure of victory, they must plan for the worst-case scenario. Lizzie is a wild card. Wade comments that he's scored her loyalty to the gods pretty low, and believes that she can still be flipped back to their side. For the game, the two sides will alternate turns, with the Manticulum declaring success or failure of the moves based on the scores they've fed it. Rupert offers to Hope to draw to see who makes the first move. Her humanity appears, offering for her to take the left handed one. Hope, however, goes right and wins the first move.

Having won her favor with their offerings, Jen talks to Lizzie and Aurora about her family. She explains that they're a bunch of douchebags, except for Chronos, god of Time, since he never once forgot her birthday. They all thought she was a freak, because she didn't fit in. They were into war and destruction, and she was more into construction. She's a blacksmith and an artist. Her father, Ken, hated her for that. He demanded her to make weapons for the gods, but she refused to make something that takes a life. Instead she offered to make them armor for protection but Ken cast her out. He said she wasn't one of them and had the heart of a coward. In time, she worked alone in her cave, forgotten. Until one day, out of nowhere, Ken came to see her, calling her daughter. He admired her skill at the forge, calling her work unparalleled. Though she was glad to be in his favor, it was her that he needed, and sought the protection she once offered. For the first time, she saw fear in his face. Aurora wonders what makes an omnipotent deity know fear. Jen explains that gods are only as powerful as people's belief in them, which had diminished over the years. However, the ultimate death sentence for a god came along. A creature that could make the world forget you ever existed–Malivore.

Alaric and the others proceed with their simulation. Alaric believes that if they could talk to Lizzie, they can flip her back to their side. He believes their first move is getting her to safety. Her humanity tells her that she should listen, and though she believes they would be wasting their first strike, she goes with it. MG vamps to Lizzie though the manticulum calculates that Aurora would attack and kill him. His death turns Lizzie back to their side and she attacks and kills Aurora in a rage. Ben explains that Ken would attack Lizzie and she'd die. With her death, their probability of success drops to zero percent and they lose. Rupert finds this situation fascinating. As soon as Lizzie died, there was simply no move they could make that would lead to victory. He presumes there's a reason she is invaluable to winning. Hope now believes they have to save Lizzie first and wants to run the simulation again.

The Necromancer and Landon are reprimanded for cleaning duty by Zied, such as cleaning up after a cyclops. Elvis enters Zied's bar, limping. He's been mugged while walking down Mulberry Street, carrying a satchel full of coins. The Necromancer believes that Zied will be angry, but he already knows about the bandit still his coins. Regardless, he thanks Elvis for the valuable information. Landon already knows he's scheming something and whatever he's thinking, tells him no. He's already made their lives worse once today. The Necromancer thinks differently. Their enemy has an enemy and can use him to find another way.

Rupert and the others run through several more simulations, each time they fail against the gods. Hope's humanity tells her she's going about it all wrong because they've already lost before they made the first move. Analyzing their enemies, Hope realizes the problem is that they're going first. They're facing them all at once and they should be forcing the gods to fight them. Hope declines the first move and Ben sends in Aurora to attack Hope first. Hope creates a barrier that throws Aurora off her feet. Hope sends in Kaleb, using his dragon fire. Aurora is killed and Hope has MG vamp to Lizzie. Ben has Ken attack MG, but Wade reads from the manticulum that he's just fast enough to save Lizzie.

Taking a break, Hope pours herself a drink but hears Ethan, invisible, behind her. He explains that they've had a breakthrough. Hope questions how many they've lost, but surprisingly, they've lost none. Dr. Saltzman realized why none of their attacks were working. Instead of using their powers, they need to take theirs away. He believes if they can buy Lizzie enough time to turn her back to their side, she can siphon a god, hence why she needs to be saved. She siphoned Jen and it weakened her enough that he could teleport her off the board and out of the fight. Should Ethan pull off the jump, Ken is the last remaining piece on the board. Now, they need her help to make the next move.

Jen continues to recount her family to Lizzie and Aurora. Ken has asked for her help so that he can hide from a fight. The reason for the sarcophaguses. Her family would be spelled to sleep until Malivore was destroyed and, as an incentive, Ken promised a boon to whoever defeated Malivore and woke them up. Lizzie believes something is missing from the story. Malivore is already dead, yet her family is still asleep. Jen explains that she lied. The spell to wake them up never existed. After a millennia, her father was finally offering her a place in the family by his side, but all she could think about was how he punished humans for every little thing with earthquakes, fires, floods. Her family were the real monsters, and she didn't want to be like them. Instead, she locked them up and claimed she destroyed the key. Lizzie is surprised to find out that she betrayed her family. Jen also retorts that should they ever wake up and find out, she'd be in a world of hurt, meaning she can't let them free any of them.

Hope has rejoined the others with Ken, the last remaining on the field. Alaric thinks this is the point that Hope steps in, but Hope would rather send in her pawns first. Hope sends in Kaleb though Ben states that Ken would strike with lightning. Wade concludes that he dies. MG attacks next, though, again Wade explains that he dies. Ben advances Ken to Hope, who sends in Cleo. She too dies. Hope steps up to face Ken, though when pressed about the outcome, Rupert states that the manticulum calculates that she will still lose.

Lizzie doesn't understand. If Jen wanted to rid the world of her family, she could've just tossed those fancy coffins into a volcano or something. Jen claims she didn't want to lose track of them but Lizzie offers a counter explanation. She believes that Jen couldn't bring herself to actually close the door on her family forever. She has similar sentiments with Hope, which makes her assume that it wasn't so easy to betray her family. Aurora knows she never destroyed the key. Jen comes clean and reveals that she hid the key in a place where she'd never be able to get it. She explains that she had a half-brother, Ben, who was treated worse than she was. He was chained to a rock to be eaten alive by monsters and then come back to life and do it all over again. She used to sneak bread and water to him if she could and that was their little secret. However, this one time, she had a secret he couldn't know about. She hid the key inside of him. By his side she explained that their father was asleep and she could set him free, however his curse will remain so as long as their father lived. She believed if he was absorbed by Malivore it could all stop. In their last meeting, she believed him absorbed. The biggest part was that the Malivore forgetting spell doesn't work on the gods, meaning she remembered everything. The look on his face and betrayal. With Malivore dead, wherever Ben is, she believes he's there for eternity. She'll never get the chance to apologize and explain that she hated what she had to do. Lizzie and Aurora exchange looks, knowing that Ben isn't, or no longer, trapped in Malivore. With this new information, they thank Jen for her time and quickly depart. Jen however liked hanging out, offering to do it again sometime.

Running through another simulation, Hope has everyone attack Ken. Wade reads off the probability; they all die, but they do real damage against him. She moves in to attack next, though Rupert tells her that she's still not enough and he defeats her. Hope's humanity questions if she needs her help and she barks back, telling her to shut up. The others look at her, questioning the outburst. Hope wants more cannon fodder, questioning how many students there's at the school. Kaleb, however, is finished with the simulations. She's been running them into the buzz saw all day like they're expendable, citing that she only cares about herself. He declares this version of her isn't worth dying for and walks out with the others.

Alone, she and her humanity talk. She yells at her humanity, but she only quips that she should keep her voice down otherwise people will think she's crazy. Her humanity tells her that she didn't go far enough and that alone is the exact way she can't do it. Like it or not, she needs her humanity. Hope retorts that she's the same humanity of the weak little girl who was manipulated by two different fake Landons and then couldn't bring herself to kill the real one. She doesn't need anything from her humanity. Except for a way to win the game. Hope will have to listen to her humanity to win.

Lizzie and Aurora make their way back to the Salvatore School. They know where the key is, though Lizzie doesn't know if they should be doing this, given the information Jen has given them about her father. Aurora reminds her about their binding agreement and Lizzie doesn't want to break it, just to raise a different god. She wants to raise the god of time and then they can go back and fix what went wrong. After all, they're trying to be better people. Before she can keep talking, she sees Alaric leave the front of the school, previously unaware he's out of his coma.

Rupert joins Alaric who asks about Lizzie during their last meeting. Rupert explains that she seemed lost, that recent events left her adrift since all the people she counted on the most to help her suddenly weren't there for her. Alaric thinks that this should have been their fight to begin with. They're still all kids dealing with more than they should. Rupert has a different take. Every generation makes a mess of it and has to pray the next generation can break the pattern, save the world. He knows that these students are extraordinary and if anyone can find their way, they can, including Lizzie. Hope comes out the door. She knows what they have to do next. This time, she wants to run the simulation again, except with her humanity.

Wade has adjusted the stats, though doesn't see how this is much of a battle upgrade, though Rupert believes much remains to be seen. Listening to her humanity, Hope wouldn't send everyone in to weaken him. She'd put herself in danger first because she can take it. She can hold the line for as long as she can, giving them the best chance. She attacks Ken alone. Wade tells her that she does damage to Ken, but he's still standing. Ben believes that his father would call down lightning. Rupert tells her that she's wounded and her life force is down to 70%. Hope continues to attack, drawing his fire, distracting him. Ben's father keeps striking and she's hit again. Her life force drops to 40%. Hope moves into close-quarter combat, inside the reach of his lightning. Wade tells her that her blows do damage, but she's too weak to block his attacks, dropping her down to 30%. Wade tells her that she has to get out of there, but Hope refuses to run. Her vision begins to blur at 20%, but she gets back up. Rupert tells her she has one move left. Kaleb, Jed, MG, Ethan, and Cleo come to her side, taking the next hits for her.

Lizzie is shocked to see her father alive. Her dad's already back and she believes that this whole plan is pointless, but if she doesn't go through with it, then their blood pact will kill her. Aurora reassures her that it wouldn't. She wouldn't consider her quitting a betrayal and tells Lizzie to go to her father. If she could have Tristan back, she wouldn't let some silly brand keep her from that. Lizzie thinks it a trick and Aurora, at one time, would have tricked her, but she reiterates Lizzie words. She's trying to be a better person. Lizzie, however, doesn't go to Alaric. She questions if raising Chronos doesn't work, what would she do. Aurora will do whatever she has to do, including raising Ken. If she does that, then Lizzie will be forced to tell her father, to which Aurora would consider a betrayal. Aurora offers her a choice: to stop now and risk losing everything or keep going and to help her raise a better god and see it through to the end.

Wade tells them that they score another hit on Ken, but he's confused about what's changed. Rupert believes that Hope is giving them all courage, a belief they can win. Ben believes his father will retreat and ultimately they win, attacking as one. Her humanity tells her that they can win, all she has to do is just turn it back on. She wants her to let her out before she loses control. Hope closes off her humanity once again. All of this isn't real, it's just a stupid game. They're all pathetic and just little boys role-playing war. She calls them all disposable and that they mean nothing to her. She addresses her humanity, calling her a liar and a martyr. The others look on, confused about who she's talking to. Her powers continue to grow unstable, enough that she tells them that they need to do something because she's about to kill them all. She pleads with someone to take her out and Alaric breaks her neck.

Back in Alaric's office, Rupert has repaired the Therapy Box, as well as having added a few settings; an upgrade. Rupert has heard of Cleo that she's quite skilled at magic. Cleo believes that those days are behind her. Taking her hand, she examines it, finding it curious that she experiences pain when trying to do magic. Most of the time, when a witch loses her connection to magic, it's all or nothing. People often associate pain with something going wrong, however, in reality, pain is merely a signal that something is changing. After providing her with a knowing look, he pats her hand and leaves as Kaleb walks in. He knows he's not supposed to be putting himself in charge of protecting her, but today wasn't cool. Cleo knows he's right and thinks that it's time to figure out what is happening with her.

MG meets with Ethan, who praises the simulated jump. Ethan explains that it felt good to finally be in control for once. However, he realized that if he doesn't get better at his powers, then people might die. MG explains that it might happen either way, as Wade told him that during the final moments of the battle, at least two of them would have died. As far as the manticulum is concerned, there's no version of them winning without losing someone. He wants to make a promise with Ethan. No matter what, it won't be Lizzie. Ethan accepts MG's promise and they bump fists.

The Necromancer stands on Mulberry Street, dramatically acting if he has a large bag of coins for Zied. Landon appears, wondering if he's laying it on a bit thick. Landon however actually has a bag of coins, though true to his word, they're partners. The first rule is you don't leave each other behind. Though he still thinks this is a bad idea. He makes the Necromancer a deal. If the bandit is worse than Zied, then they find another way and he accepts. Darts fly out of the darkness, striking them both in the neck and a van pulls up in front of them. Coving them in black hoods, people pull them into the van.

Jed and Ben celebrate theoretical victory at the Old Mill. Ben is happy that it's over. Thinking like his father is one of the more unpleasant things he's ever done and it felt awful. Jed playfully mocks him for being a downer, however for the first time, however small, he saw a chance that someone could stop his family. Likewise, Jed had a crash course reminder in how short and unpredictable life can be. It made him want to appreciate all the good things, and the good people, while they have them. Ben believes Jed is making him a better person. Jed knows the feeling, though decides to leave to check on Finch and the wolves. After Jed leaves, Aurora confronts Ben. Last time they met, he didn't put up much of a fight, but promised her that he won't be so easy to defeat this time. Aurora already knows this and why she has help. Lizzie appears behind Ben and siphons from his head. Ben falls to the ground unconscious.

Alaric watches over Hope contained in a cell. He's talking to someone on the phone. On the other side, he tells the person that he's glad they've called but he's heard nothing from Lizzie. He believes they and MG are right about Hope and she's close to regaining her humanity. He encourages that whatever they're planning, now, is the opening they've been waiting for.
