The Originals: The Resurrection is the third book in the trilogy The Originals. It is a prequel to The Originals, and it is written by a ghostwriter.

Summary[]

Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah Mikaelson had won it all, only to lose it again by 1788. Control of New Orleans is split between the vampires and the werewolves, much to Klaus' displeasure. In a dangerous attempt to reclaim his home, Klaus decides to build a vampire army to take out the werewolves once and for all. If he can't have love, then he'll settle for power. Elijah lets his brother take the reins as he turns his attentions to a beautiful and mysterious woman. But Rebekah has had enough of her brothers' love of bloodshed and begins a journey to find her first home and the key to her family's immortality. As the battle rages on, the siblings must come together and fight for what they believe in most: family.

Plot[]

At the beginning, José Pilón watches as New Orleans was lit up with flames and Klaus Mikaelson was to blame. José was meant to perish in the flames, but managed to escape by jumping into the river and get on the other side of the bayou. He knows that he needs to lay low or flee the city as Klaus would be looking for any deserters. With the closing of the prologue, he says that as soon as the embers cooled, New Orleans would rise again from the ashes.

A few weeks before New Orleans is in flames, Klaus drinks with at least a hundred recruits for his army at his new residence, unbeknownst to them they have blood in their glasses. Since he couldn't have Vivianne and settled, he'll instead rule New Orleans as power is the only prize left worth fighting for. He admits he'll do it while Elijah was distracted by Alejandra at the Southern Spot. He had been informed by his human informer, Guillaume, that the werewolves planned to strike directly at the vampires after the various sneak attacks on the Mikaelsons' businesses. José kneels before Klaus and downs the shot glass with the blood in it and Klaus snaps José's neck. When he falls to the ground, the other recruits look in horror until Klaus kills them all, awaiting for them to rise as vampires.

Rebekah rode her horse through the Louisiana countryside along with Luc, wanting to get away from the oppressive eyes of her brothers and try to get the image of Marguerite's dead body out of her head. The two start approaching a village and Rebekah decides to stop at an inn, while Luc teasingly flirts with her. While thinking to herself, it's revealed Rebekah had turned Luc as a way to save him from Klaus' army. She is looking for a particular item and was done answering to her family, with the decision coming when she had found Marguerite with a bloody broken stake in the girl's chest. She decided to end Klaus' misery once and for all as he had abandoned any decency after Vivianne's death. When Luc asks a few questions, she kisses him and they continue walking down towards the village. She begins talking about her family once being whole and explaining what Esther did to save her family. The two then arrive at the small inn and while Rebekah jingled a pouch of silver coins, and watched as Luc followed the groom to the stables at a distance. She tells the innkeeper they'll be staying just for the day and while the innkeeper implores her to stay over the night, Luc tells her to consider it. The innkeeper turned toward the staircase and Luc pounces on her, biting her in the jugular and handing her off to Rebekah, who begins to feed. As the day goes, the body count rises at the inn as the two pick off guests one by one. The two then go to their room and begin making love to each other until it's time to leave once again.

Elijah is hiding in the shadows of alleyways hoping not to get caught and then report it to Klaus. He thinks of Lisette and his intentions were to protect her Klaus' volatile behavior, who had threatened to decapitate her. After seeing two newly turned vampires leave, Elijah continues on and recounts the first time he met Alejandra at the Southern Spot. Alejandra then steps out of the darkness wearing a hooded cloak and he wraps an arm around her, guiding her toward the house he had prepared for their rendezvous. He catches her in the hallway, spinning her around as the door fully closes and kisses her on the lips.

Klaus scans the torchlit streets of the werewolves' quarter, seeing no sign of movement. Guillaume had told him that he spied on Sampson Collado going over the final strategy that afternoon. He tells his newly turned soldiers to drive them out of their homes and aggravate them, and then regroup at the garrison afterwards. Lisette warned the vampires it's not too late to reconsider, but Klaus tells her there's no need, threatening her in the process. He commands his army to go and they all begin attacking the houses, with screams piercing the night air. He walks among the streets seeing the fighting and having lost two of his soldiers, while Lisette's group is nowhere to be seen yet. Klaus then hears a noise and fights with three young male werewolves, telling them the remaining one he didn't come to kill tonight. The werewolf tries to fight Klaus, but to no avail, and stops fighting him, telling Klaus he won't forget what happened and leaves. He smells the faintest whiff of smoke coming from a house and sees a few vampires coming out. He snaps a vampire's neck and tells the others that they need more caution as he wants to own the quarter, not damage it. Lisette then comes out of the house and tells him the fire is out. He confronts Lisette and echoes her statement that she'll patrol the perimeter, and yet she's in the area where he is. While Lisette talks, Klaus tells her to join the remaining members at the garrison and start coordinating with the group leaders as she will be planning their next attack.

Rebekah and Luc are riding their horses as they get more close to Mystic Falls, and come upon houses of the town as they search for the White Oak Tree. As they walk closer to the tree, Rebekah gets tense and the two see a figure steps out between the tree's gnarled roots, and reveals that Rebekah plans to kill Klaus. The man introduces himself as Tomás and tells her he knew she would come and that he is there because he will be her death. She orders Luc to kill him, and leaps forward, but Tomás throws a shimmering powder in Luc's face, causing the vampire to howl in pain and writhe around. As Tomás walks away, Rebekah Luc's body against her own and becomes determined she won't lose anybody else to an enemy.

Elijah had awoke with a sudden jolt and at first unfamiliar with the surroundings around him. He hears screams and wonders why there was violence in the werewolves' quarter. Alejandra stirred a bit while sleeping next to him, and sees that his brother's vampires were charging through the streets. He converses with Alejandra about Klaus and tells her she should be safe in the building until dawn. He sees the flames start to subside and hears not just his brother, but Lisette's voice as well. He begins getting dressed so he can stop Klaus from getting more out of control, but Alejandra tells him not to lie for her benefit. She says that his siblings dictate their entire relationship and they are powerful, invincible creatures that can guide themselves. She also mentions that he has a choice where to devote his energy and she sees the way he chooses, but his response leaves her disgusted. She tells him she understands more than he thinks and that he can't build a future by living in the past, mentioning that Klaus and Rebekah have realized that. Elijah tries to argue his point more, but Alejandra says Rebekah has been trying to break free of the promise and Klaus has never honored it. He tells her that he's been alive a long time and has a better perspective on what needs to be done, but she suggests that he could benefit from a fresh pair of eyes. She says the world has changed and he counters that he is the foundation of his family as they would have fallen apart without him. She tells him that she has heard some rumors that Klaus has been working with the wolves and the escalating tension with Sampson has been nothing but a ruse.

Klaus is drinking with his men at the Southern Spot, celebrating their accomplishment against the Collado pack that night. As they celebrate, Lisette ponders why it seemed too easy, but begins arguing with another vampire, Anna. Lisette brings up how the werewolves had been harassing Klaus for weeks, stepping up their aggression and how they were so unready for a fight. She brings up Elijah and given the circumstances, should've shown up after what had happened. He tells her it's none of his business about where his brother is, but before anything else is stated, a brick flies through a broken window and Sampson Collado tells Klaus to come out to explain himself. He asks why Klaus chose this particular night to break their treaty of twenty two years, and Klaus rebuts with how Sampson's men have been harassing his businesses for weeks. Sampson tells his men to bring in Guillaume, who is injured beyond belief. Guillaume tells Klaus it wasn't the wolves who had been doing the attacks, and states he met a man in tavern who said if all the supernaturals would kill each other, then the humans could take back their home. While he describes the man and the pin he had, Guillaume doesn't have a name to give Klaus. He allows the wolves to take Guillaume away and tells Sampson they have much to discuss, inviting him into the Southern Spot.

Rebekah lays Luc's convulsing body among the roots of the White Oak tree, and goes to confront Tomás. He mocks her about leaving Luc all by himself, and she demands to know what the powder that affected Luc was. He insults her further, to which she lashes out at him, but he moves quickly before she could land a hit. He mentions she was a human while in Mystic Falls and if it makes a difference to a monster like her, and she agrees she is a monster, and asks to undo whatever he did to Luc and she'll be on her way. While Tomás muses that he would like to believe what she said was true and her family destroyed his home, also mentioning the Mikaelsons have lived off the blood and backs of humanity for far too long. As they continue taunting and fighting, he throws the same powder into Rebekah's face, putting her in a significant amount of pain. He kisses her on the lips, but at the time couldn't move so much as a finger. As she began regaining her vision, she comes to the realization that no only is the powder painful, it can control her as when Tomás had ordered her to remain beneath the tree, it compelled her to obey. Since she couldn't go anywhere else until the powder wore off, she remained underneath the tree with Luc. She later awakens curled protectively around Luc when the crescent moon is out. She begins thinking about Tomás and Klaus, until Luc begins to stir and stares at her, springs up and calls her an abomination. She tries to reassure him, but he springs at her, hitting and throwing her against a tree trunk. Luc breaks a branch off the White Oak and tries to aim for her heart, but she manages to have the stake stab her in the shoulder. She fights him back even more and eventually has him land on the ground. He tricks her as if he were regaining his senses and aims the stake directly at Rebekah's heart.

Elijah walks towards the Southern Spot to find out if Klaus was truly plotting against him was true. He listens as Klaus and Sampson talk, coming to the conclusion that what Alejandra said was true. Elijah leaps through the window and tells the patrons inside that he and his brother need to talk, and they all scatter towards the doors. The two begin arguing as Elijah accuses Klaus of not being on his side anymore and they begin fighting. Elijah throws Klaus across the room, telling him not to move as he thinks the fighting is pointless and believes it's time they go their separate ways. He tells Klaus that the city is his and can do whatever he wants with it, walking outside and intends to tell Alejandra that she had been right. As Klaus and his army race the daylight hours, Klaus and Lisette converse about Elijah not being told the truth of Sampson's visit. Lisette notices the Alonso brothers at the prison gate, killing the guards and prying open the heavy door. The vampires go inside and kill the other guards, offering their blood to the prisoners so they can become new recruits. As his army gathers the bodies, Klaus strolls outside and spots the symbol of Janus, but decides to push these thoughts away as he heads towards his house.
