Summary[]
Arriving in New Orleans in 1722, Original vampire siblings Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah Mikaelson believe they've escaped their dangerous past. But the city is lawless, a haven for witches and werewolves unwilling to share territory. The siblings are at their mercy…especially after Klaus meets the beautiful and mysterious Vivianne. Her impending marriage is key to ending the war between the supernatural factions—and Klaus' attraction to her could destroy the uneasy alliance. As Elijah works toward securing a piece of the city for his family, and Rebekah fights her unexpected feelings for a French captain, will Klaus' volatile desires bring their world crashing down—and tear them apart for good?
Plot[]
In 1713, a ten year old Vivianne Lescheres is walking out in the dark as being born of both a werewolf and a witch, she didn't have much fear from even the roughest residents of the city due to protection. As she walks towards the river, all she can smell was death and after seeing a man attack another with inhuman speed and strength, she decides to run as this new arrival would see that New Orleans would never be safe again.
In 1722, the Mikaelsons attend an engagement party and Klaus spots a young woman with raven hair who catches his eye. She greets guests at the party and as everyone dances, Klaus inches closer to her and butts in, taking her away from Gerald, who walks away. She introduces herself as Vivianne and they dance together, exchanging witty remarks along the way. They are soon interrupted by horns and Vivianne is announced as part of the betrothed couple alongside Armand Navarro. Rebekah tells Klaus Vivianne isn't for him, but her warning had come too late as he's already interested in Vivianne. Meanwhile, Elijah tries to keep Klaus in check and away from Vivianne at the party, but this ultimately fails. He hears Solomon Navarro's voice about the vampires staying in New Orleans and Elijah replied politely to congratulate him on Armand's engagement. Solomon comments with contempt about Vivianne and mentions Klaus, but Elijah tries to assure the werewolf that Klaus will not be a problem. He notices that Solomon is nursing a grudge against Klaus for killing werewolves when they had arrived in New Orleans. Elijah advises him that the werewolves should stay inside after dark, and Solomon punches him in the face. Solomon, Louis Navarro and a few other werewolves come together, with all of them fighting against Elijah, who manages a few blows until Klaus and Rebekah show up. The werewolves go back into the crowd and Solomon mentions the alliance, with Klaus picking up interest in it. Klaus mentions building an army, but Elijah and Rebekah stop him from going any farther to turning someone as they promised the witches they wouldn't. Rebekah mentions that the French have a camp close by and she could use her persuasion to seduce the captain to their cause. After deciding on their next course of action, the siblings leave the party.
As a couple goes through a forest, Rebekah attacks them, breaking the woman's neck and draining the man of blood. She had to make her timing quick as the army patrol comes through every hour. She shoos the horse away and gave some added effect to the wagon before putting the woman's body behind a bush. She found a knife and slashed a cut across the dead man's throat to hide the bite marks and props him against a tree. She rips some of her clothing, dirtied herself up and lay on the ground as the soldiers begin to come by. A soldier checks her and sees she's still breathing, with Rebekah getting up slowly. She feigns sadness about the "men" attacking and killing her husband, and the soldiers talk about different types of crimes that isn't mentioned directly, but the soldiers say their captain would want to increase patrols. Felix, a lieutenant in the garrison, helps Rebekah up and offers to take her back to the city. Rebekah serves up a fake story about her "husband" owing gambling debts to the Navarros and Felix decides to take her with them to their camp. They arrive at the camp and Rebekah meets up with the captain, Eric Moquet, who apologizes for her loss. He asks her a few questions before he notices the dead man, with all traces of softness on his face gone. He inspects the corpse and sees the almost hidden marks on the man's neck, telling Rebekah she was lucky to escape with her life considering there are unnatural and cursed things in the woods. Meanwhile, Klaus walks along the cobblestone, thinking of Vivianne until he sees her standing alone looking in a window. He greets her, but she gives him an uninterested response. He thinks to himself of her response and that the image of her will not leave his mind. He congratulates her on the engagement, which she thanks him for and gives him some playful responses. She greets Armand, who had come up the street behind Klaus and shows smug acknowledgement of Klaus. He shows Vivianne a box that he had bought for her, then says to Vivianne that she shouldn't be out where one's business should be, and they leave Klaus to his murderous thoughts of Armand and wooing Vivianne.
Elijah heads out pass the graveyard to the forest where Ysabelle Dalliencourt resides to talk with her. She greets him from the veranda of her house and knows what he is, stating it's the reason she won't invite him in. They walk around and Elijah tells her that despite his family having lived in the city for nine years, they don't belong like Ysabelle's kin does. She states it's their fault as they hunted the werewolves upon arrival and despite setting the truce, her kind isn't safe either. He tells her he had come to her so she could possibly influence her brethren in the Mikaelsons' favor so they could own land, but she reminds him of the alliance with the werewolves and her sounding ridiculous if she were to speak for them. He tells her he'll be back and show her that helping them will serve her interests, and she smiles broadly, but tells him she doubts she'll see him there again anytime soon, which Elijah knows better as the challenge had already been accepted. Meanwhile, Rebekah has been dealing with questioning for the past few days by Eric, who pressures her they must know what had "attacked" her and her "husband". He leads her through the grounds, hoping for her to identify her "attackers", and so she get suspicion away from her as well. He brings her to a prison and she looks at many of the prisoners until she laid eyes on one she had seen at the engagement party. She points at the werewolf and Eric has Felix take the prisoner out so his captain could question him. She watches Eric snap a branch across his knee and notices it was made as a stake. She runs into her tent and sees them carry off the werewolf's lifeless body into the night.
During the night, Klaus decides to spend it trying to find Vivianne's home. He eventually finds it and spots Vivianne sneaking through the back gate until she spots him. She gestures to him to leave, but instead he goes over to her, saying he just wants to talk. She gives him five minutes to talk and they head into her house, going into the drawer room so they wouldn't be heard. He states that he doesn't believe a woman of her intelligence could possibly be happy in a life laid out for her, but she responds that while it may have been laid out, it does not make it unworthy. He goes to touch her cheek, but she backs away and talks about how everyone's lives are insignificant compared to the vampires. He tells her that he can understand more than others can, but she mentions how she saw him kill people back when the Mikaelsons first arrived in the city. He tells her that his family came to the city to escape Mikael, who won't rest until they are dead. He mentions that if he and Vivianne could find common ground, then it could persuade the factions to do the same. He sees that he has captured her interest and places a formal kiss on her hand, deciding to leave so that he could paint what he felt he knew his last canvas was missing. Elijah, meanwhile, rode out while the sun was setting to make some progress on finding some land. He spots an older man who is having some trouble lashing a piece of canvas over barrels. The man tells Elijah to stay where he is, and Elijah dismounts off his horse to approach him. Elijah apologizes for startling him, and explains he came out to look for some land for his family. He offers to help the man and after a few trips to the cellar, the man introduces himself as Hugo Rey. He and Hugo then go inside the house to have some drinks of liquor, conversing about family and living arrangements. Hugo then gets up to grab an old wooden box and brings out some yellowed papers in it. He signs his name and tells Elijah that his home will be his once he dies and Elijah gratefully thanks him. They drink and talk well into the night until Elijah notices that Hugo's face is a little flushed. As the silence continued, Elijah sees that Hugo had passed away peacefully and silently, inside his home and with a friend. Elijah gets up and takes the papers, returning to his horse with a painful twisting of regret in his chest.
Rebekah hears the commotion outside and sees that the dead werewolf's packmates have come to bring vengeance against the soldiers. While inside her tent, Rebekah plans on going to Eric's quarters to find information about him and his true intentions. She decides to use her compulsion on Felix, who is standing guard, and at first has trouble with him not listening to her command, but he eventually succumbs and goes with her to Eric's camp. She tells him to stand guard and not let anyone in until she comes out. She starts looking around and doesn't see anything amiss, but wants to know his secrets. She pulls back curtains to an inner chamber and froze with shock, looking around and seeing various objects linked to catching and killing vampires. She thinks that she might have to pull back a little from Eric as he might also been luring her into learning her weaknesses. She then spots a ring with lapis lazuli and wonders why Eric would have one in his possession. She looks around the area where his resting area is and sees a gold locket with a woman's photo in it. She then decides to keep some of the information to herself for now from her brothers, but would investigate more fully to make sure they would be safe from harm. She tells Felix it's time to go back to her tent and that he would forget they ever left it, with Felix telling her he always follows his orders.
Klaus heads to the garden behind the ballroom where he had first danced with Vivianne, as she wrote him a note to meet her there. After a few minutes of her running late, Vivianne eventually shows up, telling Klaus she's glad he came. She tells him she asked him to meet her there so she could tell him that they can never be together so he must let her go. Klaus is at a loss for words, but kisses her on the lips and she returns it until she pulls back. She tells him she's engaged and doesn't want to see bloodshed on either side due to her own selfish desires. She tells him that the Navarros want her to trigger her werewolf gene, and Klaus realizes that the alliance would be skewed in favor of the werewolves. He tells her if they do not want her as she currently is, then they do not deserve her and offers to take her away from the entrapment. He continues to plead with her and she counters with some arguing until they are interrupted by Armand looking for her. She gives a final kiss and leaves, with him making a hole in the wall to show that he wouldn't give her up without a fight. Elsewhere, Elijah goes to the witches' graveyard searching for Ysabelle and eventually happens upon her sitting around a ring with lit candles looking angered. He tells her he has come to ask for a favor and shows her the papers that he secured a home, with Ysabelle coming to the conclusion he might've murdered someone for it. He reminds her that there was no murder and notes that she looks to be having trouble contacting her ancestors. He brings up Esther and her grimoires, as they could come in handy for a witch like Ysabelle. He tells her that he could give them to her for use only, and they could help her talk to the dead, reaching both her ancestors and Hugo. He says he wants a protection spell for his home in exchange for the books, and she shakes his hand in agreement, telling him to come at dawn with the book.
As dawn breaks, the battle against the French soldiers and the werewolves end as the wolves head back into the countryside, having been defeated by the well organized soldiers. She is told by Felix he has to attend to the soldiers, which makes her wonder about Eric's status and if he's still alive. She decides to venture out of her tent and goes to the infirmary to find Eric while also taking the ghastly sight of the battlefield. She eventually finds Eric lying on a cot with a bandage around his forehead. He speaks of a woman named Marion, with Rebekah realizing the woman is his wife and he sees that she's a different woman. He tells her the medication he's been given and she pulls up a stool to comfort him while he talks. He tells her that he had studied death and had chased such "people" to the New World to put an end to it. He asks about the lapis lazuli ring on her finger and she airily tells him it was a trinket of her mother's, and she decides to leave so he can recover. He asks her to visit him again as he believes that her company could improve his health faster than any doctor. She promises she would and leaves, thinking of not visiting other men's bedsides as she was death itself and had business to attend to. At the hotel, Klaus stumbles up the stairs, despite not being drunk, and thinks of the past moments he has had visiting Vivianne. He makes his way into his room and sees that Rebekah is sitting on the bed, looking at the papers. The two exchange hostile greetings and all, with Rebekah asking who he has been around, while he asks about the human army she's been around with for awhile. They begin arguing more about his affair with Vivianne and the alliance with between the witches and werewolves. He mentions that he had been spying on her, specifically her visitations with Eric, and she tells him that she had to move more slowly because the army knows of the supernatural. While he believes she's not being cautious, he tells her she either secure the army, destroy them or both, but don't fail or she'll end up with a silver stake like their brothers. He tells her to get her priorities in check and behave like a Mikaelson, angering her once more and she tells him to act like it as well instead of judging her. Before she exits, Elijah stands in front of the doorway with their mother's grimoire and asks what's happening. He tells them that he has a plan to ensure their safety in the town for the long-term, with Klaus replying that while Elijah is getting them a home and Rebekah is securing an army, he is building them an empire.
While Elijah is riding on his horse towards Ysabelle's residence, he thinks of the mission he needs to complete before his siblings cause any more catastrophe with their own. He goes to her door and she opens before he has a chance to knock, and he tells her he has all the ingredients she needs for the spell. They walk and he opens the grimoire to the correct page she needs and begin assembling everything for the spell. They are finally ready and Ysabelle takes her place in the center of the circle, closing her eyes and concentrating to make contact. After what feels like a great deal of time, Hugo appears. Hugo asks Ysabelle what she wants of him, and she tells him Elijah has come to her with the deed to the house. He tells her that there has been no murder and reveals he drugged the liquor. He also reveals he was an arms smuggler and that he had setup a side business with the witches to import wolfsbane, displeasing the Navarros in the process. He tells Elijah the cellar is stocked if times of trouble comes near and while not entirely pleased, Ysabelle tells the ghost they can let him return to his rest, which Hugo agrees to.
Rebekah stalks past the tents of the army camps as she contemplates crying or killing after her talk with Klaus. She decides to rededicate herself to the task and heads to her tent. Not even a few minutes to herself, she hears a sound of a throat clearing and notices Eric walking towards her. He tells her he was becoming concerned as it seemed she disappeared after her visit to the infirmary, to which she tells him she was keeping to herself. He tells her he has something for her and she notices the vervain flowers he holds out to her. She tries to be calm as she suspects it might be a plot to test her. She retains her composure and tells him it would be lovely to get away from the camp, meanwhile also telling him to put the flowers in the vase as she can't hold them while they ride. They leave the camp and after almost an hour, they arrive to their destination. She asks if he would take a walk with her, and asks if he knew who attacked the camp. He tells her they were rebels and wishes to have the city be more peaceful for citizens so the "situation" that befell her wouldn't happen to them. He then stops her, apologizes, and pulls her by the waist to kiss her. He tells her has wanted to do this since meeting her but didn't want to be too quick, but life is short as he lost his wife. He mentions that anyone they love could be taken at anytime and they shouldn't waste any time, asking her to be his wife as he wants to spend what remains of his life with her. Elsewhere, at the same time every night they have met, Klaus notices that Vivianne had been crying. She tells him that she and Armand got into a terrible fight as she mentions Armand would respect her decision if she wanted to become full werewolf or not. Klaus says that Armand would only respect her decision if it was the one he wanted her to make, while also mentioning that honoring one's word is expected in a marriage. She snaps at him about not knowing what a marriage requires, but he tells her that he hasn't been a bachelor in his heart since he met her at the dance. He tells her he loves her and she replies that she knows, taken him aback at her response. She asks him to take her away for the night and the two head for the hotel where the Mikaelsons are staying at. He locks the door to his room so they wouldn't experience interruptions and she notices one of his paintings. She tells him she's happy to be here with him and they shouldn't worry about the morning right now. They begin undressing each other as they kiss, heading for the bed and begin to make love to each other. Meanwhile, Elijah and Ysabelle spread peat from the bayou to establish a perimeter around the land to begin the protection spell. The two finish spreading the peat and stepping inside the barrier, flames produce and spread around the line as Ysabelle begins the spell. As she finishes, Elijah feels a heavy, oppressive presence and the spell explodes on itself, with every window in the house blowing outward, and he shields Ysabelle from the impact. She tells him there was no deceivement and looked through the grimoire, stating everything was correct and thinks the problem is the land. She says while the house was Hugo's and transferred to Elijah legally, the land is pack land, as magic and the law do not always agree. She states she vaguely recalled Hugo's name before was because he is a werewolf by blood, but chose not to change and was given land by the werewolves when he was exiled. She tells him he needs the blood of a Navarro werewolf, but there's a possibility the only way to obtain it is by killing, which would put Elijah in a precarious position than before. He tells her that he'll get the blood tomorrow night and she should be ready to perform the spell again by the time the sun rises in two days.
Eric urges Rebekah to take all the time she needs to speak about matters, specifically about the proposal. She thanks him, but in her thoughts she wants to enjoy it as there are too many obstacles or consequences if she were to say yes to him. Her thoughts are interrupted when Felix comes in to report to Eric that the captain is needed at the communications post down by the river, to which Eric gets up and tells her he'll return while also asking Felix to keep Rebekah company. She notices him rummaging through the drawer and going into the inner chamber, which starts to make her uncomfortable. He asks for her help in finding an item and as she walks in, she grabs his wrist, with the wooden stake falling out of his hand. He calls her a demon and the two begin fighting, with Felix relentlessly not giving up the fight easily. He tells her he was trained by the master of vampire hunters and was sent to exterminate her kind. She realizes Mikael is the one responsible for sending the soldiers to New Orleans, but remarks to Felix that if Mikael wanted Felix to kill her himself, he would've told him how to properly kill her. He tells Rebekah that Eric sent everything they learned to Mikael, while also revealing he followed her into the city and watched her feed. She tells Felix that killing him will accomplish a great deal as he interrupted her meal and is hungry, draining Felix of blood. She leaves the tent and broke for the river, running fast enough to be seen only as a blur and hoped Elijah had gotten the protection spell working on the house as they were going to need it.
Klaus woke in the late afternoon and notices that Vivianne isn't in the bed, causing him to get up and get dressed, circling her family's home. He then notices her coming out of the house and followed her, knowing that she was making a decision she most likely will regret. He sees the werewolves gathered in a semicircle near the edge of the forest and notices an unconscious man laid on an altar. Vivianne is greeted by Armand and Solomon, and she tells the crowd that she will fully embrace both halves of her to make the city whole. Armand hands her a knife and she takes it, walking slowly to the altar. She lifts the knife and slices the man's throat, with the full moon rising in the process. As the others turn into wolves, she writhes on the ground and begins changing as well. Disgusted, Klaus turns his back on the scene and would find some other way to drown his sorrows. Elijah wanders into the forest to find a werewolf until he happens upon a huge crowd of them. He grabs a werewolf and sank his fangs into the creature, pulling out a handkerchief and pressing it on the spot. He then realizes the whole pack is around and begins to run, knowing that it would be better than trying to defeat them all. He goes back to where the altar is and notices a snowy white female werewolf nearby. With the venom burning every inch of his body and the dawn glittering off the Saint Louis, he threw himself in. Rebekah arrives at their new residence and is clearly displeased at its appearance. She decides to go find her family and goes into the forest, searching the line of the river until she spots something in it and sees it's Elijah. She notices the injuries on him and pulls him to shore, feeling relief at the faint sound of his heartbeat. She runs back to the house with her brother and tries to find a place for him to rest. She heads to a cellar and finds a series of tunnels through the trapdoor until she hears a sound. After doing some work on the house, she goes to check on Elijah and sees movement from another source. She sees it's Eric with a stake in his hand standing over Elijah's body and she attacks him. She wraps her hand around his throat, cutting off his breathing until he goes unconscious.
After two days of drinking at the Southern Spot, Klaus decides he needs a little bit more time so he could stop thinking of Vivianne and enter real life again. Armand enters the establishment and tells Klaus to stand up and face him like a man. He reveals to Klaus about what happened to Elijah and Klaus punches Armand in the nose. They fight more violently until Klaus waits to see if the werewolf will stay down. He apologizes to the women and decides to head to the house to hear Elijah's side of the story. While Rebekah is gone, Elijah wakes up and had given up on trying to figure out what was real. He tried to grasp at the messages the hallucinations were trying to tell him. He sees that each hour going by was less confusing than the last and had been healing slowly. While focusing his eyes on the trapdoor, Klaus greets him and comes down. He confirms to Klaus that he took on the Navarros, but he then remembers the handkerchief he used to obtain the werewolf blood, wondering where it is. After Klaus tells him the blood on his shirt belongs to Armand, Elijah asks to give him his shirt, smiling while doing so. Afterwards, Ysabelle does the spell once more and noticing there was no boom this time, she throws a knife at Klaus, but it bounces back. Elijah thanks Ysabelle and thinks about the man he had seen in the cellar and why Rebekah had not returned. Meanwhile, Rebekah stares out at the ocean as Eric joined her. He tells her he had followed her trail and thought Elijah was the monster who killed Felix. She realizes that it wasn't serving her purpose to keep pretending, so she tells him the man was her brother and they are vampires, extending her fangs. She reveals she had killed Felix and Eric tells her Mikael hired them to gain information, not murder them. He says that after Marion died, he had searched for years so that he could become a vampire. She tells him that they'll leave together as he's her family now, thinking about the promise the Mikaelsons made to the witches about not making any new vampires.
At their new residence, Klaus becomes restless and bothers his brother until Elijah sends him out to do some work at an old stump. While looking around, a strange keening is heard and while unsure of what it could come from, he hears Vivianne, who tells him she came to see if he was alright. Klaus is unsympathetic and turns his back on her, but Vivianne follows him and says she saw Armand, and Elijah the other night. Klaus shows the bitterness on his face and exclaims what did she to do to cause all the fighting. She says she wanted one last night as herself before she changed, but realizes she made a huge mistake. He reveals to her Ysabelle had put a protection spell on the house and she asks to be invited in, but Klaus refuses. She soon sees that despite his anger, he still loves her and tells him she wants to make things right with him. He tells her that while he believes she regrets what she has done, but her wavering between sides leaves to uncertainty. She tells him she'll end her engagement to Armand and he invites her inside. While they kiss and she tells him that she'll break off the madness that day, he disagrees and says that they have an advantage now, making Elijah's line of attack take shape.
Elijah later attends a meeting that the council holds every month on the night of the new moon, noticing the senior and respected members was not pleased to see him. With animosity from the werewolves and Ysabelle wondering why he is there, she is restrained by Sofia Lescheres, the widow of Quentin Lescheres and mother to Vivianne, and Elijah states that he is there to voice his reason for having a seat in the council. With the Navarros reacting violently to the suggestion, Sofia tells them to be silent and let Elijah state his case. He says his family have been in the city for nine years and are now landowners, believing they deserve a place among them as they plan to stay. After he finishes, accusations and yells are heard by many, with Solomon asking who had sold them land and Elijah holds up the deed left by Hugo. He says the werewolves have tried and failed to kill them, so they might as well coexist. Louis begins threatening him, but is silenced by Sofia once again, and she tells him to focus on the matters at hand if they want to keep their place on the council. With the mentioning of the entire Navarro pack being in the woods, Sofia questions why and Solomon lies about the event. Ysabelle says that maybe they should grant the request so they could avoid the misunderstandings of what happened. Sofia agrees and Elijah states that they will throw a ball in honor of the upcoming wedding as a way to honor their truce. Sofia tells him they have to honor their promise of no violence or misunderstandings, and Elijah thanks her for her wise words, with the council rising and Elijah happy with the success.
Rebekah is still spending time with Eric, but also realizes that she'll have to face her brothers with her decision. She and Eric go to the Mikaelson home, but meets with Klaus at the door, who is still angered by their encounter in the hotel room. They walk in to see Elijah at a table, who sees Eric and at first puts on a show until Rebekah tells him Eric knows. Klaus and Elijah are surprised about this revelation, wanting her to explain the situation. While Klaus is more angered at her explanation, Elijah pulls them apart from exchanging more blows, telling her that while they have made progress, the rules remain unchanged in that they can't make any new vampires. Rebekah replies that the two will leave the city as she loves Eric and not much longer later, Eric appears, talking to her brothers. After hearing Rebekah and Eric's explanations, Elijah and Klaus relent and accept the decision, talking until the sun rose.
While they get ready for the party, Klaus and Vivianne talk about the factions and that Vivianne plans on telling Armand first that the wedding is off. Before they decide to go out, Armand interrupts and reveals he knew that she had been sneaking out countless times. He then runs off, but Vivianne grabs him until he slaps her across the face. The music dies down from the party and guests start looking at the spectacle that is happening before their eyes. While Vivianne tells Armand she never loved him, Armand tells her that he's not too concerned about her opinion of him since he had lost respect for her when she fell for Klaus. He insults her more until she slaps him, gaining attention from the guests, with no music resuming this time. He thinks it's time for everyone to know what's really going on and stalks off. Vivianne apologizes to the guests and tells them that the engagement has ended. While there are angry tones, Solomon asks why Klaus has nothing to say and he tells the werewolf that Vivianne knows her own mind. She apologizes once again to the crowd and starts walking away until Solomon starts going towards her, only to be stopped by Klaus. Elijah goes over to his brother before a fight starts and tells the two lovers to leave, while Solomon gets into Elijah's face. While Solomon eventually backs off, Louis shouts about Elijah playing them for fools, talking about peace while Klaus destroyed the alliance behind their backs. Elijah remarks that no one knows what Klaus does until it's done, but also says he negotiated in good faith and wants peace. Solomon says that Klaus took off with their prize and wants her returned to her rightful place. After it dawns on Elijah that the white wolf he saw was Vivianne, Sofia asks of Solomon why her daughter rightfully belongs to him, even having no desire to marry Armand, and what he did to her. While the werewolves seem ready for a war, Elijah reveals that Vivianne turned before the marriage could be official, as the werewolves wanted her to be theirs more instead of the witches. Elijah says he saw her after she had changed and the werewolves tried to silence him for it. Sofia tells the werewolves there can be no peace if they made her daughter turn and the witches began speaking in a constant, steady manner, casting a spell, and Elijah tells Sofia her daughter needs her mother, despite Sofia being angered at the deceit. After Ysabelle, Elijah and Sofia walk out, Sofia tells them that she knew it was a mistake, but her daughter thought she was one of them already, that they wouldn't hurt her, wanting to believe her daughter's words. Ysabelle comforts her sister and Elijah understands right now it's the moment for family, and he needs to find Klaus.
Rebekah stands at the bow of the ship, thinking about her family and the promise they made. Eric puts an arm around her as she feels his warmth for the short amount of time he has left of mortality. He tells her that the captain told him the tide was turning and while she procrastinated a little, she thought of what they would be doing in the West Indies with each other. She lets Eric know that she is ready and to tell the captain, while she whispers goodbye to New Orleans when he leaves. They set sail and she exclaims she is finally free, and while they are sailing away, she mentions she wants to be away from the city before she turns him into a vampire. He says they could go below to pass the time and they head down to their cabin, making love as the ship rocked a little. Meanwhile, Klaus and Vivianne arrive at the Mikaelson home and Klaus notices some dark clouds moving too fast, sending a slight shiver down his spine as he watched them. He soon hears the words "traitor" , "monster" and "vengeance", noticing torches coming near the house. The werewolves surround the house and while they cannot come inside, they could wait for days until they either starve or get smoked out. The two decide to head down to the cellar to look for some weaponry to protect themselves against the werewolves outside. While looking around, she thinks of trying to reason with the werewolves, but Klaus tells her it's all for naught. At the banquet hall, Elijah waits for the last of the werewolves to exit, and sees that there were more witches alive than he had thought. He sees the storm building and the witches concentrating on a particular spell they are casting at the moment, and manages to ask a witch what is going on. The witch tells him that the witches plan on razing New Orleans to cleanse it and start over. Elijah runs for the house and the beginning of rain has started to come down. He sees the werewolves surrounding it and begins breaking limbs, snapping necks while hacking his way through them. As he gets closer, he registers Louis and snaps his neck, as the Navarros have caused him enough trouble. He gets to the door and is dragged inside by his brother. Elijah decides he's had enough and tells Vivianne the werewolves are here for all the murder that has happened for an infinite amount of time. He tells her it's much bigger than her and she'll help them fight because if not, all three of them might be killed. While Elijah thinks about Rebekah, Klaus tells him that there's an arsenal in the cellar and they could use it while they are able to. He also reveals to them that the hurricane is caused by the witches, and the two brothers finally see eye to eye with Elijah asking Klaus to show him the arsenal.
Rebekah notices the storm coming in quickly as the captain stammers on the situation. While there are urges to turn back, the captain and Rebekah seem determined to go on. But, as Rebekah watched the current and strength of the storm, she decides it would be best to turn back. She goes to the captain and compels him to turn back around to New Orleans, and they'll sail again once the weather is clear. As the lightning strikes and waves get worse, she runs towards Eric before he loses his grip, but a bolt of lightning struck the mast and she couldn't see him anymore. She sees his limp and lifeless body underneath a beam, and tries to get him out, but to no avail and the two go underneath the water with the rest of the ship. While upset at the loss, she decides to keep him where he's at as if she were to bring him with her, she would just keep his corpse waiting for him to come back, holding on to hope he would be brought back to life. After reaching the surface, she sits on a hillock sobbing for the loss of Eric. While she knows she'll have to rejoin her family, she decides to sit awhile despite the battering rain hitting her. Meanwhile, Elijah and Klaus walk through the tunnels in the cellar while trying to plan a course of attack or escape. He lets Vivianne sit in the upstairs bedroom as he didn't want her to watch the slaughter and because she kept suggesting they find a more peaceful approach. They check for ammunition and look for the barrels that Elijah had brought down when Hugo was still alive. They eventually find the barrels and they can smell the gunpowder that's packed inside them. Elijah muses that one could make a powerful blast if it stays as is and could blow the ground underneath the werewolves' feet without harming the house. They make a trail from each barrel and Klaus sets the trail on fire as they go up the ladder. Elijah wonders about Vivianne and Klaus begins to call her name, but she does not answer. They look outside to see that she had been confronted by Armand and Solomon, but as Klaus tries to get to her, the barrels begin to go off with Vivianne disappearing as the ground erupted underneath her. While the house remains untouched, he hears moans and holds Vivianne's corpse, mourning the loss of her. He tells what was left of the surviving werewolves to run as there would be no amnesty as the storm descends upon the land.
Elijah goes to fetch Klaus as the storm's winds proved to be a force to be reckoned with. He notices his brother holding Vivianne's corpse and apologizes, telling him he would've stood behind him if he knew he truly felt that way towards Vivianne. The house manages to stand its ground against the storm as it ravaged through the land and when morning breaks, Elijah tells Klaus they'll be passing by the witches' cemetery so Vivianne could be properly buried. On their way, they have managed to see a few werewolf survivors packing up their carts as there was barely a pack for them. They soon arrive at the cemetery and Elijah sees Sofia and Ysabelle on the porch. Sofia goes inside the house as Ysabelle tells him that she is grieving as they blame the witches who cast the hurricane spell that they didn't think of putting protection for themselves. Elijah confirms that Vivianne is one of the casualties and said she did not suffer. He offers to do the arrangements for her niece's burial so Sofia could properly mourn her daughter and Ysabelle thanks him. They take off to their house and the horses react to Rebekah being present there. Elijah consoles both of his siblings for their loss of love and they still have each other.
