No, I have everything I need! Combine a knotting spell with a sire bond spell. I just have to combine them the right way... [-and do them in reverse.]
Davina and Kol talk about the spell in Red Door

The Sireline Unlinking Spell, or simply the De-siring Spell, is a complicated spell that breaks the connection between a vampire and the Original Vampire who sired them. The spell was created by the Harvest witch Davina Claire using Esther's Grimoire.

History[]

This spell was first mentioned in Rebirth by Davina who studied Esther's grimoire wishing to unlink her friends, Marcel and Josh, from Klaus's sireline which would allow her to kill him without them dying too.

In Alive and Kicking, Davina misdefines the spell as a simple de-linking spell; however, Mikael makes it clear that the spell would erase the link between Klaus and every single vampire he's sired. Davina ignores his remark, citing that she only cares about Marcel and Josh. With Esther's grimoire, it would only be a matter of time for her to create a spell that would spare them and let the other vampires from Klaus' sireline die with him.

In Red Door, Kol discovers that Davina was using his mother's linking and sire bond spells in reverse with the aim of saving her friends, and that she was using a Kandahar root as a binder. He drained the root's power to prevent Davina from severing the link between Klaus and his sireline, because his mother wanted Klaus alive and connected. After Davina attempts to cast the spell, she learns that Kol ruined the Kandahar root and the spell was a failure.

In Chasing the Devil's Tail, Davina explains to Kol that she's trying to repair the damage that he did to her de-linking spell. Her attempts, however, are futile.

In Dead Angels, Aya informs Marcel of the Strix's contingency plan and her reasoning for recruiting Davina into the Sisters. With the right witches, the correct spell, and the precise binding agent, she explains that there is a means to eradicate their link to their sires, making them free from the Mikaelsons forever.

In Heart Shaped Box, Davina contacts Kol using the Hand of Glory to find out the ingredient needed to finish the spell. Through studying the spell used to turn the Originals into vampires, Davina was able to figure out the final ingredient, which was the heart of an unsired vampire. This meant they needed Hayley's heart. The sisters attack Hayley but fail due to Kol knocking Davina out which affected the coven. They end up retrieving Jackson's heart due to it being a mirror image of Hayley's as a result of the Unification Ceremony.

In A Streetcar Named Desire, the Sisters start the spell by first dropping Jackson's heart into the water. They next retrieve Klaus and Elijah, placing their bodies into the water while their minds are trapped in the Chambre de Chasse. They slit their throats before beginning the incantation. Their spell is halted after Elijah wakes up and kills two coven members, while Hayley kills another. Davina, who has not been attacked yet, throws Klaus back into the water as he's recovered and leapt at her once he had been freed from the Chambre de Chasse. Davina then finishes the spell herself, delinking Klaus from his sired vampires; she then collapses. Klaus then states that he felt the vampires leave. The spell worked and his sireline was broken.

Requirements[]

The reversal spell is a combination of various already existing spells, requiring several rare objects in order to be performed, as well as a large source of power.

  • Kandahar Root (Unused): The purpose of this herb was to act as a binding agent for the original spell Davina was creating. It, however, was destroyed by Kol and was not used in the second version of the spell.
  • An Unsired Vampire's Heart: One of the crucial ingredients of the spell, it served as a conduit for the Sister's dark magic that connected the water and the Original vampires during the spell.
  • Specific Grammatical Changes: According to Davina, there were several specific changes that she had to make in the incantation of the spell in order for it to function properly.
  • Targeted Original Vampire: The spell requires the Original who's connection to the sireline is being broken to be present during the ritual. The Original in question is required to bleed out before and during the spell.

Contradictions[]

This spell was first attempted in Red Door by Davina and Kol though the spell was stopped by the latter who previously destroyed the Kandahar root that served as the binding agent of the spell. Unaware of the binding agent, he ordered Kol to either kill the spell or to kill the girl. Despite knowing that an unsired vampire's heart was required, albeit for the second attempt at the spell by Davina in Heart Shaped Box, Kol destroyed the Kandahar root. Davina presumed that the amendments to her spell with the Kandahar root would have been successful. With her second attempt, the Original vampires, whose sirelines were attempting to be broken, and their blood were also required, whereas Davina previously attempted the spell without their physical bodies present. As the spell was cast on Klaus, he was submerged in the pool of water with the unsired heart and his blood and his sireline was broken, whereas Elijah had freed himself from the pool and his sireline remained intact.

Trivia[]

  • According to writer and Season Three executive producer, Diane Ademu-John, it would be very difficult to recast the sire link spell on Klaus and his sireline as it took a very special set of circumstances to break the sire link.[1]
  • Davina makes the mistake of saying that Esther used the blood of a vampire to sire the Originals; however, Esther actually used doppelgänger blood from Tatia to perform her spell. Void of the point that there were no vampires prior to the spell, this is a blooper.
  • For reasons unknown, Valerie, another New Orleans witch, was in possession of a Sire Bond spell though her daughter, Nandi, explained that all of her stuff was gone and they had lost it during Hurricane Katrina. This spell, however, used Expression and Nandi claimed that the Sire Bond can't be broken with magic.
