Summary[]
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS – Hope presents a challenge to Ken, which he has to accept. Cleo is set on revenge. The Super Squad prepares for the battle of their lives. Meanwhile, Landon has some unexpected visitors.[2]
Plot[]
At Torch 'n Toke, Jen works on her father's weapon. Impatiently, Ken questions how much longer it will take. Jen responds, telling him to chill considering she's smithing something that has never existed before. Ken doesn't appreciate the backtalk and only requires her skill. Due to her insolence, he questions if he should return her to her prison or perhaps force her to build a more painful one. With her spear complete, she begs him to let her go. Ken picks up and admires the weapon, boasting of the day he no longer needs to see her shameful face. He commands that she will go nowhere until her weapon is proven true against the tribrid. Jen assures him that god magic plus Red Oak ash equals a lethal combo for the tribrid that is if he can stick it in her heart. Brandishing the spear against her neck, Ken threatens that she better not be lying to him again, otherwise she can pray to some other god.
Hope appears behind Ken, mocking him by saying she wouldn't bother and they tend to suck. Her unexpected appearance surprises him and questions why she's come. Hope explains that Cleo told her that only one person has to die. She's come to accept his terms. As self-sacrificing as it is, it's also disappointing. However, Hope has actually come to issue her own challenge, according to the Old Ways. Trial by single combat. Between her and him. Ken assumes that Ben has informed her of their customs. Hope confirms that he has and that once a challenge is issued, it can't be refused. She proposes to start the battle in two hours at the school. He accepts, but decides why wait when she's here, now. He takes the spear and lunges it towards her; however, instead of the spear impaling her, it goes through her and strikes a bearing wall behind her. Jen compliments her on her sweet move, while Hope assumed Ken would try something so shady, hence the astral projection. She tells him she'll see him on the battlefield and disappears.
Hope awakens, as Alaric watches over her body, with the astral projection complete. He asks how it went, and she confirms that Ken has taken the bait. Now it's time for them to go to war.
Downstairs, the students hold a vigil for Kaleb. MG places a candle down in his honor and vamps away. Hope stands in the back as he leaves.
Alaric approaches Cleo in the art room, thinking she'd like to go to Kaleb's vigil; she doesn't. Lighting candles and sharing stories will not help him or them for that matter. Alaric notices that she's packing a bag, and knows she has other plans. Guilt ridden, she explains that it was her decision that cost Kaleb his life, but Alaric tries to reason with her. His death was at Ken's hand. Cleo, attempting to leave, explains that he will pay dearly for it. Alaric blocks her path, telling her that he's already lost one student and doesn't want to lose another. Cleo reasons with him to let her go because while the school is fighting Ken, she'll make sure that no other god can do something like this again. Alaric uses his own experiences and attempts to get through to her. Revenge feels good for a brief moment, but it won't bring Kaleb back and it won't make her miss him any less. Cleo thanks him for the advice, noting that she'll be certain to enjoy that moment. Cleo walks past him as he's unable to persuade her to stay.
Hope and Ben go through their weapons armory. She wants him to pick a good one since she's about to duel a god. Ben picks up a sword and easily snaps the metal in two, claiming not that one and how their school's armory leaves a lot to be desired. Despite this shortcoming, warriors are the ones that win battles, not the weapons. Sadly, they've lost one of their best warriors. Ben wonders if she doubts her plan. She retorts that he's been in battle more than any of them and he should know what happens to plans, especially when an enemy shows up. In Ben's experience, the worst plans can overcome the best, so long as those fighting believe in it as well as the person leading them. Hope laughs at his remark, but he reassures her that her friends have faith in her and she should have it in herself. She just has to trust her instincts.
MG and Lizzie practice in the gymnasium. The dummy, Ken, and she are covered in silly string and she notes that this is a bad omen. MG looks towards the bright side. She's finally siphoned Ken and triggered the explosion. Lizzie focuses on the part where she's blown herself up in the process, but MG encourages her. She can do it and just has to put up a shield spell in time. Lizzie is more pessimistic, citing that they'll have to plan another vigil. She immediately regrets the comment and apologies. MG accepts and confides in her that it's taken every ounce of strength he's got to not let Kaleb's death pull him under. There's only so much loss he can take. She reaffirms to MG that Ken is the only one dying today; she promises.
Alaric and Hope discuss their plan in the meadow. When Ken arrives, she'll need to keep him busy until Lizzie can vamp in, siphon him, and trigger the explosion. Best-case scenario, it results in his painful and permanent demise. However, should he survive, then Jed and Ben will lead the vampires and the werewolves out of the woods to finish him off. Hope points out that just leave him and he assures her that he'll hang back and support them with cover fire, so long as his leg holds up. They're as ready as they'll ever be, though there's just one final thing. He pulls her into a hug and she hugs him back. The sky darkens and thunder rolls through the clouds. Hope tells him to get into position as the show is about to start.
In the surrounding woods, Finch follows Jed, pointing out that the battlefield is in the opposite direction. Jed knows, but that's not the direction Ben is in, and he asks if she knows where he is. Finch reminds him that Ben is an ancient warrior who can't die and that he should be more worried about those of them who can. Jed knows she's right. His first thought in a situation like this has always been the pack–it should be the pack. However, when Ken comes for him, he doesn't know what he's going to do. Finch knows; he needs to stick to the plan. He can't leave the pack without a leader. The pack won't have a leader because they'll have her if things go sideways. Finch tells him she will, that is, until he returns.
In the meadow, a bolt of lightning crashes into the ground and dissipates. Aurora emerges from the dust with the spear. Aurora greets Hope, wondering if she expected someone else. To her surprise, it appears that she's switched sides. Lizzie was sure that she'd change. Aurora commentates that none of them really change and that they are who they are. She can't stop being a Mikaelson, so much so she can't stop hating everything that they stand for. Hope muses if they could skip the monologue to the part where she tells her why Ken didn't show up. She explains that he sent her in his place, though Hope retorts about him having no honor. Aurora finds her hypocrisy adorable as it's clear she's planned to cheat and laid a trap for him. She can hear all of them in the woods, the wolves and their very loud heartbeats. That's the Klaus Mikaelson in her. Ignoring her own hypocrisy and doing whatever it takes to win. Branding the spear, she tells her that she's not the only one who can cheat. In the woods, Hope listens in as the wolves scream out in pain. She demands to know what she's done, but it's completely out of Aurora's hands. Aurora attempts to goad her into helping her friends, but Hope ignores her. Her friends can handle themselves. Her fight is here, with her.
In the woods, Ben runs past several wolf students, beginning to transform, pointing out the obvious as he comes upon Finch. She struggles with the turn, her bones cracking as she fights the pain, giving him a snide thanks. Ben assumes this is his father's work because he can control curses. He must have triggered all of theirs to sabotage them. He needs to know where Jed is, but she doesn't know. She tells him that he needs to leave, now.
Alaric, MG, and Lizzie rush through the trees. Lizzie remarks that these woods are about to be crawling with carnivores foaming at the mouth for vampire meat. She and MG need to get away from there. Alaric points out that if any of the vampires are bitten, it could cause a chain reaction, sending them all into a feeding frenzy, putting everyone in danger. MG has another idea, though it's risky. They need to get the wolves to safety by leading them to the tunnels beneath the school where Lizzie can trap them with a barrier spell. Lizzie questions who will be bait, but MG doesn't respond. She refuses to allow himself to be bait, to put himself in danger like that. MG points out that she's bait for their plan against Ken, and Alaric intercedes and tells him to do it. They have to protect the greatest number of students. While they handle the wolves, he'll get the vampires inside. A wolf breaks the tree line, snarling. Alaric raises his crossbow, telling the two to get to the tunnels that he'll hold it off since he's not after him. MG and Lizzie vamps away and Alaric takes aim. He pleads with the wolf to not make him do this, but the wolf has no reason. It lunges for Alaric and he releases a bolt.
In Limbo, Landon stands behind Zied's bar, cleaning the counter top. A corpse of a man places a rather large jar barely filled with coins on the countertop, groaning. Landon tells him "No", as he's trying to do things a little differently. Instead of things attached to monetary value, he decides to use something personal, something from his past that he needs to let go to move on. The corpse reaches into his pocket and places a pocket watch on the countertop. Inside, it has a picture of a woman. Landon accepts and tells him that it will work. He'll meet him down at the dock, one last beach to take. Kaleb approaches him, hoping that his boat makes other stops. He has to get back to school and back to life.
Cleo infiltrates Jen's hideout, finding the four remaining sarcophagi with sleeping gods. She's covered them in pellets of phosphorus or sulfur intending to give them the same fate as Ken. She grabs a blow torch, commenting that what she's about to do is for Kaleb. Before she ignites the chemicals, Jen wakes up and startles her. She's chained to a steel beam with god metal. She questions if she's here to bust her out since Ken is having trust issues. Asking for her hammer, she notices the pellets leading to the sarcophagi. She realizes that Cleo is not here to save her; instead, she's here to kill her family.
Hope and Aurora face off against one another. Hope matches Aurora strike for strike, but believes that she's made a mistake bringing a spear to their battle. Hope casts incendia in an attempt to destroy the spear, but it has no effect on it. Aurora explains that it was forged with god magic which renders her witchcraft useless. Hope believes they're evenly matched, but Aurora doubts that. She manages to strike Hope with the spear, though Hope believes she's had worse injuries. As they continue to trade blows, Hope falls to her knees, her wound spreading like an infection. Aurora explains that the sensation she's feeling is Red Oak making its way through your bloodstream to your heart. Nature's way of telling her that she's overstayed her welcome and that it's time to die.
In Savannah, Ethan watches a weatherman on a small TV. He speaks of a massive electrical storm developing out of nowhere over Mystic Falls. Maya shuts the TV off, asking if he wants to go to the park. They can throw a football around and she'll let him teach her how to throw a spiral. Unable to eat his breakfast, he confesses that there's no way that this is just a storm. He knows the gods are coming. Maya tells him that whatever it is, it's no longer his problem. Ethan fights her on that point. If his friends are in trouble, he can't just sit here and do nothing. She knows his feelings, but knows that if he uses his powers again, it could kill him and he can't help them if he's dead.
Hope leans on her back on the ground as thunder rumbles overhead. Aurora knows Ken is coming and they need to make this quick. Hope begs her not to do this. Killing her won't fix the past, nor will it erase the pain that she's experienced. Aurora believes otherwise. She's been under her father's sway for centuries, desperate for even the smallest expression of love, only to be reminded time and time again of his cruelty. She's been caught in an endless cycle, until now. His line ends with her; the last vestige of Klaus Mikaelson wiped from the world forever. Aurora strikes down the spear, aiming for her head, but Hope stops it between the palms of her hands. She retorts that her father was pretty hard to get rid of, and so is she. She pulls the spear forward beside her and kicks Aurora through the air; she's been fooled by her ruse. Aurora attempts to get up off the ground, but Hope casts a spell to immobilize her in place. It's now time to end this.
Alaric covers the body of the slain student, having reverted back to their human-form. Ben approaches him from behind as Alaric discovers that his wounds aren't healing. Ben believes that his father has altered his curse and has made him mortal. Alaric assures him that the witches can heal him and attempts to get him to return to the school. Ben refuses to until he sees who lays dead behind them. Ben pushes past him and removes the jacket. Jed lays dead with an arrow in his heart. Ben's spirit is crushed as his cups Jed's lifeless face. Alaric had no choice since he was going after MG and Lizzie. He apologizes as Ben lets out an agonizing scream.
Jen didn't believe Cleo had it in her. Sneaking in to try and murder her family in their sleep. Cleo admits that she wanted to hurt her father as he did her. In truth, she hadn't stopped to think of the people she'd be killing, that is until she saw her. She apologizes to Jen, and she accepts. Ken brings out the worst in everyone around him, including herself. Cleo confesses that she doesn't know what to do with all of this anger; what is the point in being a Fury if it leads her down a path she cannot go. It's infuriating for her. Jen perks up with this news, asking who told her she's a Fury. Cleo explains that it was her father and this excites her. She was right, that she was more than just an oracle. This changes everything. Before Malivore, the Furies were the thing that Ken feared. She goes on to explain that the Furies have a special connection to the minds of all gods. Cleo places a hand on Jen's forehead at her request.
Out in the woods, Lizzie comes to a cellar and calls out to MG. If he can hear her, his plan has worked. The werewolves are in the tunnels and all exits are sealed, except for this one. She tells him to follow the sound of her voice. MG speaks back as she listens. He tells her to go on without him and seal the exit. Lizzie doesn't understand, but MG assures her he'll find another way out. Lizzie refuses to leave and enters the tunnel, finding him collapsed on the ground covered in werewolf bites. She wants him to hold on as she can siphon out the venom. As she begins to siphon from him, he screams out in pain. He tells her there's too many. If she can't siphon out the venom, she'll get him to the infirmary. There's no time. As werewolves howl in the distance, he tells her she can't get trapped in there with them. He's made a promise to protect her and intends to keep it. She needs to get out of the tunnels and defeat Ken. MG knows she will because she's awesome. As werewolves approach the two, Lizzie casts a barrier spell preventing their advancement. However, MG has succumbed to the venom and has died in her arms. Realizing he's gone, she cries.
Hope stands over Aurora's immobilized body. This cycle of revenge always leads to more violence. It's how her father lived most of his life and she is her father's daughter. Hope stabs the spear into the ground next to her body, telling her that is not all he was capable of. Casting another spell, she frees Aurora, much to her surprise. Hope explains that this is her trusting her instincts and believing that she's not too far gone. The people can change. There was a side to her father that she never saw. One that was decent, kind, and loving. He knew he couldn't make up for his past sins, but he still tried. He didn't want pain and suffering to be all that he left behind and neither did she. Extending a hand, she asks Aurora to break the cycle and Aurora accepts her hand.
A bolt of lightning strikes the Earth and Ken emerges from the dust. He demands to know what is going on, if she's having more doubts. Aurora vamps to his side with the spear in tow. She claims it was a ruse and tells him that the weapon is effective. This will be a much heralded day in his legend. Hope scoffs and questions if Ken really sent her into battle not knowing if his weapon would work. She could have been killed. Hope begs Aurora not to do this and that she saw real doubt in her eyes. Ken commands her to be silent, that her opportunity was wasted with mercy. Hope ignores Ken, still attempting to reach Aurora. She was worth trying to reach even if her brother, Klaus, or Ken never saw it. Ken has had enough. Hope picks back up her sword and the two begin to fight.
Kaleb ushers out the last of the monsters from the bar. They have the place to themselves, so no one's going to get jealous when he sends him back. Landon confesses it isn't an option for them. What Kaleb is asking him to do can only be done once. Kaleb doesn't understand. He's taken over the Ferryman's role. He explains what Lynn had told him. Breaking the rules of Limbo has a price. Kaleb is fine with that and agrees to pay whatever it is, but it's not up to him to pay the price. Should he change the delicate balance between life and death, a part of him will change–his emotions, his empathy–will start to fade. Until something he doesn't actually know. Knowing this, he can't ask Landon to pay this if it means losing his soul. He won't ask him to do that. Landon argues he's doing it for everyone and that Cleo needs him. The school needs a dragon to help win the fight. He's saying if they only get one shot at this, then he's making it count. Jed and MG rush into Zied's bar, the pair have been looking for Kaleb and are surprised to see Landon. Kaleb assumes they must be losing if both of them are dead. Landon tells the three of them things are about to get better, at least for them.
Hope and Ken match blows against one another until Hope struggles to fight through the pain. Ken lands another blow and she tumbles to the ground. Soon she'll be too weak to fight while he's only just getting started. Hope stands and manages to kick him backwards, but Ken only believes that she is delaying the inevitable as he's already decimated her cavalry. He claims no one else is coming to help her and lands another blow. In a strange way, he's done her a favor. He admits that she could have been worshiped as a god, but she chose to bind her fate to lesser creatures and that her attachments were her weakness. Hope stands and faces Ken, refusing his claims. Her friends have made her stronger. Ken doesn't understand how, but as she claims, monsters rarely do. Aurora stands watching events unfold, not willing to intervene. With end in sight, Ken creates lightning in the palm of his hand and strikes Hope, sending her flying through the air. Ken approaches her, claiming the end of the legend of the tribrid, the legacy of Klaus, forever. As Hope struggles to stand, Ken raises the spear to land a killing blow. As he brings the spear down, Aurora vamps in front of Hope as the spear's end plunges into her chest. Hope braces her as Aurora stares Ken down. Confronted with her betrayal, he removes the spear. Hope takes the opportunity to vamp Aurora to safety at the Old Mill.
Hope lays Aurora on the ground, laying her head in her lap. She tells Aurora to hold on and that she can heal her. Before she can bite her wrist, Aurora stops her and tells her that it won't work. The spear is forged with god magic. Hope compresses the wound and sits with her. Aurora tells her she was right about her. Aurora loved her father as much as she hated him. His spirit, his indomitable will. She wanted him to change for her, but she wasn't enough. Hope was, though. Klaus changed for her and she saw in her everything that she couldn't have. Aurora tells her how sorry she is. Hope apologies back for not seeing this side of her sooner and for what she had done to her. They're all complicated and Hope has the very best parts of Klaus in her. She tells her that she did too little too late, but she can do more. Removing her hand, she encourages her to go and finish this and to never forget who she is. Aurora succumbs to the fatal wound and dies.
Ken yells for Hope to come and face him. He's in the mood to spill some blood. As he turns, he stops an arrow at his face. Ben and Alaric stand and face Ken, who accepts to kill them first. Ben states that he'll make him regret all the things he's done today and for all the people that've died because of it. Ken's only regret is not killing him sooner. He launches the arrow back at Ben, but Alaric jumps in front of the arrow, taking it in the shoulder. The two amuse him; a mortal and a former half-god. Ken calls out to Hope, questioning if this is the best she's got to offer him. Lizzie vamps behind him; she's his next opponent. Facing her, he quips that last time she tried to take his power, she could barely contain it. Vamping to face him directly, she tells him she's been practicing and grabs his hand, siphoning. She calls out to Ben to get her father out of there and to get him help. Ben grabs up Alaric and the two stumble out of the meadow as Lizzie struggles to hold on to Ken who's resisting her. Continuing to siphon him, she wonders if he smells it–white fire and brimstone. Ken falls, with one knee bracing him.
Ethan calls out for Lizzie to wait and appears beside her. She explains that she can't hold the god magic for much longer and the meadow is going to explode. Ethan tells her he's not going anywhere because he's "Rescue Guy". On the count of three, Lizzie denotes the explosion as Ethan teleports them to safety beside Alaric and Ben. Alaric pulls Lizzie into a hug only to discover that Ethan has turned into ash right beside them; his finite powers resulting in his death.
Cracks of thunder ring out as Ken, though badly wounded, emerges from the smoke. Hope walks up behind them, instructing them to get them to safety. She can handle Ken. Lizzie tells her she's in no shape to fight, but Hope refuses to listen. Lizzie stops her and siphons off her wounds, allowing her to heal. Completely recovered, Hope advances to face Ken. He admits that he underestimated her, but it won't happen again. Even in his weakened state, she won't be able to kill him. It won't stop her from trying and she telekinetically grabs her sword. Ken claims she will die alone, but Lizzie stands beside her, joining the fight. MG, Kaleb, and Jed appear by their sides, joining them as well. She's not alone and the five of them face off against Ken. Lizzie doesn't understand how they're back, and Jed tells her it's a long story. Kaleb will fill them in once they defeat Ken. Ken is still confident in his abilities as this changes nothing. They will all die. Hope commands Kaleb for the first strike and he unleashes dragon-fire. Ken easily stops it, unaffected by Kaleb's assault. Lizzie vamps behind Ken and screams out for them to take the spear as she siphons from him. Kaleb, MG and Jed rush Ken and grapple with the spear, though their combined strength pales to Ken, even in his weakened state. He slams the spear into the ground, releasing a shockwave of energy that sends the four of them flying into the air. As they scramble on the ground, fear covers their faces as Ken has had enough. They are children and cannot kill a god. Setting his sights for Hope, he raises the spear and launches it at her. Unwilling to move, the spear stops just shy of her heart, surrounded in a yellow glow. Ken, as much as Hope, is surprised and doesn't understand what is happening and demands what treachery this is. Cleo comes and claims the spear for herself and clarifies this is her judgment as a Fury. Ken demands to know what she's deemed him guilty of, but she retorts for being a dick. His punishment is Hope and she vamps behind him. Turning to face her, Hope reiterates that it takes god magic to kill a god. Using the might of her physical powers, she kicks Ken through the air as Cleo raises the spear. Ken is impaled in the back by his own weapon. She hopes he rots in hell as he takes his final breath. Dead, Ken's body explodes in a fiery burst of light. Jed, MG, Hope, Lizzie, Kaleb, and Cleo stand in victory as the clouds dissipate. MG and Lizzie and Kaleb and Cleo embrace one another in hugs as they break and embrace everyone.
Jen sits in her hideout, as the god chains break open. Much to her surprise, she's relieved that they did it; defeated her father.
Ben helps the injured students to their makeshift infirmary. Alaric is still alive. Alaric gives him the credit and asks about Ken. Ben confirms that Ken is dead and every curse he's placed has gone with him, so he's luckier than some. Alaric tells him how sorry he is about losing Jed, but Jed approaches them, telling them they don't have too. Alaric and Ben are shocked to see him standing before them. Jed offers Alaric an apology as he was the one who was trying to kill MG and Lizzie. He had to do what he did to protect them and bears no hard feelings. Alaric struggles to stand to hug him, but Ben embraces him instead. Ben thought he had lost him, but Jed tells him that his friend is in charge of Limbo and he sent them back. Knowing the gods, he assumes there was a price, but in the most Landon way possible, he paid it for them. All he can do now is pay it forward with the best life he can. Bringing him close, Jed embraces him in a passionate kiss.
Later that night in Ethan's dorm room, MG prepares a small candlelight vigil for Ethan. He couldn't stand the thought of him being alone. But it looks like you haven't been. This school is full of students who are more powerful than him, but at the end of the day, it was him who made the ultimate hero move. It sucks that he isn't here to enjoy the world that he saved with them. MG knows he's supposed to say that he's lost, that he doesn't know how he's going to go on, but he does know. The world may never know who Rescue Guy was, but he will never forget him or what he stood for, because he will stand for it, too.
By the dock, Lizzie and Hope pay their respects to Aurora with a Viking funeral in the lake. Hope explains that Aurora finally admitted that she loved her father and she deserves the honor, especially after the sacrifice she made. She asks if Lizzie would like to say anything. Their relationship was complicated, but she taught her that complicated doesn't mean broken. She really hopes that she finds Peace. Hope agrees and, joining hands, the two cast incendia, setting Aurora's body on fire.
Sitting at Zied's bar, the soldier drinks with Landon. He tells the soldier that he didn't forget to send him to Peace, only that he just got a little sidetracked and some old friends needed his help. He couldn't say no. The way he sees it, he's upheld his end of the deal, and agrees to send him off now. Before the two can leave, Ethan walks into the bar, realizing he's dead.
