We Have History Together is the eighth episode of the eighth season of The Vampire Diaries and the one hundred and sixty-third episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
CLASS IS IN SESSION — Stefan and Damon attend an anger management support group looking for their next victim. Sybil is still alive and teaching a group of high school students who she'll later use as leverage to get Caroline to locate a historical artifact that can be used against her. Meanwhile, Stefan and Damon continue their commitment to Cade as they test the morals of a young doctor, Tara. Matt also appears.
Plot[]
Three weeks later, in January 2018, Damon and Stefan are still killing people for Cade. Meanwhile, Bonnie and Enzo left to Paris, while Caroline is doing a report on her old high school from the alumni angle.
Matt meets Dorian at the Armory. Dorian tells Matt that "Harvey" knew the sirens back in 1790 and that he found Harvey's descendant: Peter Maxwell. Matt and Peter are shocked to see each other. While looking at the Ethan's journal, Peter realized that Ethan had a bell. He also tells Matt that it was the Donnovans/Maxwells who founded this town, but the Founding families had money so they took the credit.
Caroline is interviewing the students, when Sybil arrives pretending to be a teacher. She tells them that even though the Founding families found Mystic Falls, others have lived there long before. She references the burning of 100 witches and takes the whole class and Caroline to the spot. She makes the whole class tie themselves to trees. Sybil says that Ethan Maxwell was a blacksmith who made the bell. It was passed on through generations of Donovan family, ultimately ending with Peter, who threw it from Wickery Bridge in 1992. Since it can't be destroyed, she tasks Caroline with finding the bell. Otherwise, she would burn the students.
Meanwhile, Damon and Stefan continue hunting people. They locate a a young doctor Tara who reminds them of Elena. Stefan injects Damon with vervain and he ends up in the hospital under Tara's care. Stefan compels Tara to think that her parents were killed by Damon hoping that she would kill him in an attempt to corrupt her soul. He creates a medical emergency so that Tara would start thinking about harvesting Damon's kidney's to the first person on the waiting list. She decides to kill Damon with an injection. Later Damon kills her because she gave in her darkest desires.
Matt says to Caroline that the bell was discovered in the river in 2009 after Grayson and Miranda's deaths. Since then, it was in Elizabeth Forbes' storage room. Sybil makes Caroline them them to the bell, but Seline had already took it and left the note. Meanwhile, Dorian tells Matt that the tuning fork and the bell are supposed to be used together. Matt and Peter find and free the student just in time before Sybil forces a student to lit the fire. Sybil also makes Caroline doubt that Stefan would even return after his year of serving Cade is up.
Later that night, Stefan forces Damon to throw Elena's necklace out of the window. He does it to prove that he doesn't care about her, but returns the next day alone to retrieve it, proving that he still has some parts of humanity left. At the same time, Stefan murders the entire hospital.
