I had a vision of a tree. I didn't realize it was on school grounds, but I should have known Nature would create balance near the site of the tribrid's birth.

You're A Long Way From Home is the sixth episode of the fourth season of Legacies and the fifty-fourth episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDEJosie and Lizzie search for answers which leads Lizzie to uncover a dangerous plan. Cleo works on tracking down Hope, who does not want to be found. Hope pays a visit to a familiar face. Meanwhile, Landon gets some clarity – and a surprise visitor. Alaric, MG, Kaleb, Jed and Ethan also appear.[2]

Plot[]

Hope walks down a deserted street in New Orleans, but comes to a stop. Hope quickly notices Cleo, who claims to only want to talk. She, however, is merely a poor distraction while the others get into position, which doesn't go unnoticed. With their cover blown, Josie, MG, Kaleb, Jed, and Ethan step out and they all confront Hope. Hope questions if her warning was too subtle, though they're here to help. Calling Kaleb a traitor, MG tries to rally them, to not let her get into their heads. Cleo tries to reach out to her, but Hope makes the first move. Using her magic, she blasts them outward. Kaleb recovers first, but Hope uses her vampire speed to throw him back into a wooden table, staking him in the process. Taking the stake, she throws it at MG, killing him, too. Cleo, now back on her feet, tries to use her magic to subdue her, but Hope is quicker and immobilizes her first. Jed rushes Hope, trying to overpower her with physical attacks, though she's stronger and manages to rip his heart out. Ethan, still new to his powers, has no choice but to run. He disappears and runs away, but Hope can still hear him. Using a manhole cover, she decapitates him. With Hope momentarily distracted, Josie casts a sleeping spell on her and she collapses to the ground. Hope is prepared, however, and fakes out the spell to gain the upper hand against Josie, vamping behind her to break her neck. Cleo, still immobilized, is the last one remaining. Hope expected this much from them, but not her. Hope knows there's a weapon that can kill her but Cleo doesn't have it, nor did the others know about it. Regardless, Hope casts the incendia spell, burning Cleo alive where she stood.

Cleo wakes up on the gym floor of the Salvatore Boarding School in a screaming panic. Their simulation in the Therapy Box has failed, again. The bell rings and they depart for class. Josie hangs back and asks Cleo what happened to her after they all died. Cleo only claims that the usual happened, neglecting to inform them of the weapon capable of killing Hope.

They sit in Ms. Featherwood's class as she calls roll. MG, Jed, Kaleb, and Wade sit in the back and continue to discuss their failed simulations. Jed prefers to die by decapitation as opposed to his heart being ripped out. Wade understands. In one of the simulations, Hope stabbed him in the eye, though it's a fake pain that stays with him. Ms. Featherwood scolds them for chit chatting during her class and continues to call roll, though they quickly return to talking, albeit a bit more hushed. MG wants to try another simulation; he just doesn't know why they keep failing. They're obviously missing something, though Kaleb has already figured that out. They're missing a leader because they were so used to relying on Hope, they never had a plan B. Their simulations are just a taste of what Hope will actually do to them if she returns and they're unprepared. Ethan asks if she'd actually kill them, though, startling them all. He's invisible, still having trouble controlling his powers. Kaleb, using Ethan as an example, believes they need to get back to training and enough with the simulations.

In Alaric's office, Lizzie skips Ms. Featherwood's class and Josie berates her for it. Lizzie scours numerous texts, looking for something to help her father, claiming that people grieve in different ways. However, Josie keeps having to remind her that their father isn't dead. Alaric remains in a coma, not exactly alive, as Lizzie puts it and scolds Josie for missing their meeting from hours prior. Josie explains that she was with the others, attempting to figure out what to do about Hope. This angers Lizzie, believing that Josie is more sympathetic for Hope as opposed to their dad, since the former was the one to put him into a coma in the first place. However, Josie rebuttals that they saw all the same memories and this isn't what their dad would want. Besides if anyone is powerful enough to heal him, Josie believes it's her. She's mad too, but they can't do this without her. Lizzie believes otherwise and puts Alaric first. If Lizzie finds a spell to help, she'll be there to help. As Lizzie rifles through more books, a secret compartment opens, revealing Alaric's journals. Within one, there's an ancient spell, something she believes that can help.

In Limbo, Landon confronts the Necromancer. He believes all this is a trick, though the Necromancer isn't lying, pointing to the Ferryman and explaining who he is. He is the true Ferryman who controls passage to the shores of peace of never-ending bliss and free from the turmoil of existence. Landon questions why he's not in Peace, but the Necromancer quips that some of his questionable life choices preclude him from receiving that particular reward. Landon mocks his predicament, relieved even, because it's something that he can't scheme his way out of. Landon turns to leave and approaches the Ferryman. He gives the Ferryman his name, believing he's destined for Peace. The Ferryman holds his hand up to Landon, drawing one finger up to shake 'no'. The Ferryman denies him passage, which greatly amuses the Necromancer. They're in the same boat, as it were.

In the library, Cleo combs through a dendrology text, researching trees. Finch is there, too, watching maps spelled to track Hope. Finch doesn't really know why she's there when it's obvious that Hope doesn't want to be found. Cleo explains that they all have people who they will go to extraordinary lengths for. Flipping through her text and landing on a page of Red Oak leaves, Finch says she's seen that tree before. In fact, it's in the garden next to the cherry blossoms. Their bright red leaves are hard to miss. Cleo thanks her, but Finch quips that she can repay her with a spell for nausea. She believes that Hope is just going around in a big circle. Rearranging the maps, they make a smiley face. To their dismay, they haven't been tracking Hope.

In suburban Fayetteville, Georgia, Ryan Clarke has a new, happy human life. His girlfriend, Trudy, prepares his breakfast and gives him a key to her house. Something special for their big day. It's their two week anniversary. The key is just in case he wants to start staying over more, though their attention is drawn to knocking on their front door. Ryan quickly rushes over to open it, finding Hope in the doorway. Ryan is surprised to see her, admitting it's a weird time for him, but Hope insists on being invited in. Trudy comes to the door, asking who she is. Ryan tells her that she's an old friend, but she's leaving. Hope stays and explains that she used to date his brother and Trudy, wanting to meet Ryan's friends, invites her in. She and Ryan have a lot to catch up on.

With Trudy in the kitchen, Hope inspects photos on the mantle. When she told Ryan to go get a life, she quips that she didn't mean the first Stepford Wife starter kit that he met. Hope picks up one photo in particular, questioning when they even took it. Ryan says it was on their first date. Trudy said they shouldn't waste any time if they both knew what they wanted. Ryan wants her to leave. Trudy doesn't know anything about his past or the supernatural world. His past is exactly why she's here. She's looking for the bloodlines of the witch, werewolf, and vampire that created Malivore. She also tells him that Malivore, and Landon, are both dead. Ryan is an orphan and only child now. Hope mocks Trudy's domestic lifestyle, and Ryan points out that Hope's a tribrid. He's sure something big and scary is going on, but doesn't want any part of it or Triad. He's not that guy anymore. Hope flatly explains that he is going to help her, or Trudy dies. Ryan picks up that her humanity is off. She asks Trudy to take a closer look at her necklace and behind her, shows her true face, threatening her. Ryan relents and accepts to show her on a map on where she can go. Hope questions that he should come with her and reclaim his life, for old time's sake. Ryan refuses, citing he has responsibilities, a job, and a relationship now. He doesn't have time for supernatural high jinks any more. Hope declares it his lost and leaves.

Getting off the phone with Freya, Josie explains to Finch that Hope made it very clear that she didn't want to have any contact with her family. Josie elects to think like her dad in this situation. Finch tries to calm Josie, but she snaps at her. The last time she relaxed, Alaric was in a coma. Josie apologizes for biting her head off, Finch brushes her off, electing to get out of her way.

Landon leaves the docks and wanders Limbo with the Necromancer following behind. He's determined to find another way out of Limbo, or at the least to get away from him. The Necromancer claims that the only way to Peace is on the Ferryman's boat, and the only people allowed on are the ones who give the Ferryman a coin. Landon stops, intrigued about the coin, but the Necromancer doesn't know how to come by one of these special coins. All the good people seem to already have one and all the bad people don't. Landon claims he's not a bad person, but the Necromancer points out that he doesn't have a coin. Though he has betrayed him in the past, he claims he's not the Necromancer anymore. Landon isn't convinced, but the Necromancer promises not to go to peace without him by his side. Oscar appears behind him and tells Landon that he should listen to him. Theodore, he calls him, was the best, smartest, and most compassionate man he ever knew.

Cleo admires a leaf from the Red Oak tree in the garden, noting that it's grown so quickly. Lizzie has been looking for her. As much as she'd love to get lost in a memory, she needs some translation help because she's not a polyglot. Cleo knows enough to realize that the symbols are ancient. Lizzie believes that, based on the drawings, it's a spell to bring someone back to life. She questions if thought it would work on Alaric. Cleo tells her that this spell may be further than she should consider going. Lizzie questions just how far the spell asks to take her. The spell, however, would require a human sacrifice.

Ryan, working for the Breton-Bar Life Insurance Company, sits in his cubicle, calling clients. Trudy surprises him at work, calling him a liar. Hope has told her everything; how he cheated on her, that he's a con man, and just after her dad's money. Trudy's dad approaches her and she embraces him in a hug, crying over Hope's supposed stories, claiming that he was right about Ryan. Her dad fires Ryan on the spot and is forced to pack up his desk and leave. Outside, Hope waits for him, asking if he has time to join her now.

With his relationship in ruins, he's forced to go with her, though he doesn't stop trying to call Trudy back. Hope continues to mock Ryan, making it seem like she's the one sleeping with him. She tells him that he doesn't want to be "Ryan" because Ryan is dating Trudy, who gives off vibes of upper 30s desperation. She gives him a bleak outlook on his future; he'll be middle-aged with kids who can't stand him, a mortgage he can't afford, a wife that wants to know his every whereabouts, and a job as an assistant regional manager at a place he can't leave. Hope claims to have done him a favor. Ryan tries Trudy again and she actually answers the phone. To his horror, Hope grabs his phone and throws it out the window. Being "Clarke" is way better, she reassures him.

Kaleb, MG, Ethan, Wade, Jed, and Josie organize a training session to hone their abilities. MG and Josie take point and watch as the other boys get into position. Jed wants to follow MG's instructions, citing that Kaleb should create diversion against the fake Hope. Kaleb however, doesn't want to leave the take down to the B-team and moves in first, disregarding Jed. MG has Josie begin the trial and she casts a spell to create mini bursts of lightning. Wade is struck first and MG tells him he's dead and to walk it off. Jed wants Kaleb to vamp them past the lightning, but Kaleb ignores him, going on his own. Jed is struck next, and MG tells him he's dead too. Kaleb continues to fake Hope, dodges one trap only to be fake-staked with another trap. MG tells him he's dead, but Kaleb doesn't accept MG's ruling. While they argue, Jed encourages Ethan to teleport behind fake Hope. Still having trouble with his powers, Ethan barrels into Kaleb, knocking them both to the ground. Jed sticks up for Ethan, at least he's trying to use them. Jed continues to push Kaleb until his anger gets the best of him and he breathes out a fireball, narrowly missing Jed and Ethan. Kaleb runs off the field and Josie suggests they take five weeks. Cleo barges on the field and tells MG and Josie that they may have a Lizzie problem on their hands.

In Limbo, Oscar tells Landon that it was the Necromancer that convinced him that they shouldn't be afraid of dark magic and that they could use it for good. He became his acolyte and helped him to begin to build his powers of necromancy. That is, until they realized that to reach his full potential, he would have to sacrifice something dear to him. Landon equates him to Chad, but the Necromancer brushes that point off, citing that his mind is muddled for dying and coming back so many times. Oscar is sure he's the one who figured out how to do that. Landon interjects again, the Necromancer had killed Oscar for more power. Oscar was okay with it because he believed that the Necromancer was going to bring him back as well as his Cordelia, too, along with his parents. His life was a small sacrifice, because with that power he could change the world. The Necromancer inquires about him. He died ages ago and questions why he never moved on to Peace. Oscar, however, never received one of those coins and believed he wasn't as good a man as he thought. Oscar wanted to stay, anyways, just to see how it all turned out, but after a while, he realized it must not have worked. Landon asks to talk to the Necromancer alone, as he believes he knows how to get one of those coins.

Josie confronts Lizzie, gathering ingredients for her spell. She doesn't want to believe it, but Cleo was right. Lizzie admits that she wanted a spell and Lizzie has found one, no less in one of Alaric's journals. Josie tells her they can't go through with this spell because they're not murderers. Lizzie, however, wants to do the spell. People die in that hospital every day, all they need to do is find someone who's really sick. Dying a day early won't make a difference, plus they'll be saving a life, too. Josie is adamant that Alaric wouldn't want to come back this way, but Lizzie disagrees. There was a time in Alaric's life where there was no such thing as too far. If Lizzie won't listen to her, then the others are just outside and won't make it past them. Lizzie however prepared for that. She has the Illusion Ring and intends to walk right past them as her. Putting the ring on her finger, she appears as Josie. She siphons from the ring and casts a sleeping spell on Josie.

At the Triad Data Facility, Ryan gains Hope access with his passcode which is still active. That will only get them so far and there's an elaborate security system. Hope, however, doesn't intend to sneak around and pulls a fire alarm, alerting them to her presence. A vampire and a werewolf emerge from a door and engage Hope in physical combat, though Hope easily overpowers them, killing the werewolf.

In Limbo, the Necromancer confronts Oscar. If Landon is correct, Oscar is stuck in Limbo because of their unfinished business with one another. In order for him to move forward, the Necromancer needs to tell him the truth. He did get the power but just never brought him, or anyone back. He just wanted the power for himself. He was a tyrant. He used Oscar, to his dismay, because he knew he was a good person that would do anything for someone he loved. That doesn't change anything and admits that he was wrong. In his heart, he hopes that he can truly forgive him. Oscar believes he wants forgiveness so he can be at Peace and believes that he's using him again. Oscar attempts to walk away from him, but the Necromancer admits that he hopes that the truth will set him free. It wasn't all fake. He did love Oscar and his companionship was a rare and beautiful thing. He should have never thrown it away, and urges him to leave this misplaced trust behind so he doesn't miss a chance at Peace because of him. Oscar accepts his apology and a coin appears in his hand.

MG tells Kaleb that he was right. The squad has a problem and they need a leader, but Kaleb can't be that. He can't lead a team who doesn't trust him. What he did was try and save Cleo on his own, however, Josie did just that but with the team behind her. He's trying to fix his mistake, but MG explains he can't take it out on the team. Until then, he's benched. Josie awakens from the sleeping spell and explains to them that it was Lizzie and she's trying to do the spell. Kaleb gives them his key and they set off for the hospital.

At the hospital, Lizzie cloaked as a nurse finds a patient in critical condition. The Doctor explains that all they can do is keep him comfortable.

In the heart of the data facility, Ryan sees they have an Argus on watch, though chained. Hope admits she'd just kill it single-handedly, but opts to throw Ryan down for him to handle the creature. And use him as bait. As the Argus sets its many eyes on Ryan, Hope is free to find what she's looking for.

Lizzie prepares the spell to save their father with the other dying man. As she casts the spell, a young woman beats on the locked door, wanting to see her dad. Lizzie tells her just a second and tries to keep going, but her pleas reach Lizzie. The girl wants to say goodbye to her father and Lizzie stops the spell.

Ryan runs from the Argus, circling back and around, ensnaring the chain on filing cabinets, stopping the creature from reaching him in a dead end turn. Hope has found what she's been looking for and intends to find out just who Ryan wants to be. She grabs a sword and breaks the chain, freeing the Argus. Ryan prepares to attack, though the Argus stops in its tracks, turns to look at Hope and walks off away from them. Hope won't know who he intends to be, Ryan or Clarke.

At the hospital, Jed and Ethan accompany MG and Josie. They are to stand watch as they'll check the ICU. Josie, however, finds Lizzie leaving a room as she collapses to the floor. Josie knows she didn't go through with it, but Lizzie admits that she almost did. She found someone on the brink of death, but his daughter was there, similar to their own situation. She thought she knew what the right thing was, but she always talked to her dad about it. Without him, she feels like she doesn't know what the right thing to do is anymore and feels like everything is on pause now. She can't guarantee she won't do something worse tomorrow. Coming to terms with her actions, she admits she needs help and rests her head on Josie's shoulder for comfort.

Back in the therapy box, Cleo confronts Hope, Red Oak stake in hand. This time will be different. She had a vision of a tree and she should have known that Nature would have created balance near the place of the tribrid's birth. Since she came alone, Hope reasons that she still hasn't told anyone about it, but Cleo wants to test her theory first. Cleo casts a spell as Hope vamps towards her. Cleo teleports behind her and stakes her in the heart from the back. Hope immediately begins to desiccate and turn to ash and ember, blowing away in the wind. Cleo is ejected from the device as Lizzie and Josie enter the gym. They would like to use the Therapy Box and ask for a minute alone.

Back in Fayetteville, Ryan returns to Trudy's house and his stuff is thrown on the curb. Hope admits that she moves fast and Ryan doesn't blame her for Hope's actions. She still doesn't believe him. She's freed him and though she convinced him just how much being human sucks, however, Ryan wants to go back to Trudy. Ryan does admit that being human sucks, and disappointing, and some days you hate it, but that's all he's wanted for a long time. Trudy is one of those people who loves with their whole heart immediately and he wishes he could be more like her. It's more than he's ever had. She calls him pathetic, but he was just thinking that about her. He was jealous of her and her friend. They had a home and stuck together and he never thought she'd be stupid enough to throw that away. Hope isn't worried about his opinion, but Ryan believes otherwise. She wanted him to make the same choice she did. Somewhere, deep inside, she knows what she's doing is wrong. He warns her not to open the book and to return home before she does something she can't come back from.

Kaleb cleans up Alaric's office and Jed brings him good news. They got to Lizzie in time and Kaleb admits that MG was a good choice as a leader. Jed apologizes for what he said and Kaleb apologizes for the fireball. He admits there's things he has to work out on his own. Jed is sure that he'll get his new powers under control.

The phone rings and it's Ryan calling, though Kaleb doesn't recognize the voice. Cryptically, Ryan asks if it's the super squad and if it was, that there's an Argus on the loose, acting weird, off Route 50. He tells him good luck and hangs up. Ryan is finished with his past life and tells Trudy the truth, however she's more interested in more about vampires. She wants to know everything.

Jed questions the call, but Kaleb brushes him off; it was a wrong number. He thanks Jed for the training offer, but decides to train alone.

Finch reunites with Josie who's struggling with being alone. She attempts to apologize for what she said earlier, but she gets it. She thought Josie was going to join Lizzie in the box, but Lizzie didn't want her to. Finch believes that Lizzie was right, some problems other people can't fix. Josie is still concerned and admits to her that there was a moment where she thought Lizzie went through with the spell and Alaric was back and she wouldn't have to figure this out alone. However, Lizzie's gone now too and she doesn't know what to do. When Lizzie is around, Finch believes there's no room for her to be messed up. She takes Josie into her arms and cuddles her. She tells her that she's not the Therapy Box, but she can hold her and she can be whatever she needs her to be. The world won't fall apart if Josie breaks down. Finch holds her tight as Josie begins to cry.

Landon and the Necromancer watch as the Ferryman grants passage to and takes Oscar into Peace. The Necromancer admits that he deserves it more than he does. This revelation, however, grants him a coin. He believes it to be a mistake and didn't let anything go. Landon tells him it's because he finally did something good and helped Oscar find Peace. This means he can go to Peace too, though true to his word, he gives the coin to Landon. He made a promise and won't go there without him. The Necromancer is granted another coin. He exclaims that he knew it. Self-sacrifice is always the answer and declares that he has won against the Ferryman. He apologizes to Landon, claiming that he's still a work in progress. Alaric appears behind them, asking if they have room for a third despite still being in a coma.
